The graphics are among the best of the genre and the dark corridors and shadows help make the game seem even more real. The introduction and cut scenes are limited but witty and humorously clever. The sound is extremely intense and has a genuine combat roar. Players can hear distant gun shots and screams to warn them of impending danger around the next corner, and the sounds echo and raise in volume as the action gets closer. The easy mode includes an overhead radar to keep track of the opponents while the game provides a warning indicator, in all modes, of approaching competitors. With the rich and detailed graphics, enhanced controls and blasting sounds, Xs is gaming to the excess and is sure to be the next in the chain of shooter evolution.
For to måneder siden ville jeg muligvis have været henrykt, men nu er Quake her. Dårlig timing - kom igen, SCi!
PC Games (Germany) (Feb, 1997)

GT Interactive is a company known for publishing great action titles: id's first-person shooters Quake and Doom, 3D Realms' Duke Nukem, and their latest successful publishing effort, SCi's SWIV 3D. But that kind of stellar line-up is almost impossible to maintain. GT Interactive inevitably had to disappoint hard-core action gamers, and that particular disappointment manifests itself in the form of another SCi title, XS.
XS is really just one of those games you pick up and play for a level when you need to kill some time, since there isnt that much to do in it and the graphics engine is extremely out of date. It certainly doesnt offer anything in the way of compelling atmosphere or gameplay. It's not terrible, just terribly shallow and out-classed, given the current state of first-person shooters.
DOS: Computer Gaming World: bad abstract

So, the foundation upon which SCI's XS is built – a multiplayer-like game that doesn't require other players – is inviting. The game has a series of 20 deathmatches with computer opponents who behave more like humans like drones. There isn't a better action-game AI currently on the table. But that's one of the game's few assets, and design limitations quickly outweigh this one advantage.
Power Play (Feb, 1997)

XS from GT Interactive is, in my estimation, another Doom clone (not even that good) with a couple of twists -- in other words, a half-hearted attempt to score some bucks from those die-hard gamers who get sucked into the glitz on the cover. I mean, if you gotta have every first-person shooter out there then you may as well collect this gem also, but if you are looking for an awesome first-person experience, stick with Duke.
