The second best beat 'em up on the DC (after Soul Calibur) is better than Tekken Tag, which is supposedly one of the PlayStation 2's big hitters. One of the Dreamcast's biggest UK releases for ages goes to show you that it's well worth hanging on to your DC. DoA2 deserves to sell loads, so go and buy it. Now.
GamesFirst! (Apr 03, 2000)
Still, none of the game’s imperfections stop Dead or Alive 2 from being the best fighter available on the Dreamcast. Beautiful graphics, a complex fighting system, superb counters, and a bonus Tag Team mode leave the competition bleeding and whining in the sand, and the four player combat finally gives players a reason to own more than two controllers. If you buy one fighting game, buy Dead or Alive 2.
GamePro (US) (Nov 24, 2000)
DoA2 might not be quite as flashy as Soul Calibur, but it's every bit as engaging as Namco's epic master of melee. Gamers who balk at memorizing pages of combos will delight in DoA2's defensive gameplay, and fighting veterans will enjoy having an all-new, incredibly awesome fighting game to conquer. Dead or Alive 2 is, most positively, alive.
CyberGames (Mar 29, 2000)
3D fighting perfection. You need this game, end of story.
Shin Force (Mar 26, 2000)
Dead or Alive 2's graphics excel, especially with a VGA Box. It's pretty close, but I think DOA2 looks better than Soul Calibur because of its flair, art, and babes. As for gameplay, it's not quite on par with Virtua Fighter 3tb, but it's a close second. As a result, I'm going to crown DOA2 as my current favorite in the fighting genre. I don't know about you, but my expectations were exceeded by Team Ninja...
Power Unlimited (Aug, 2000)
IGN (Oct 10, 2000)
And that about wraps up the list of improvements. The Japanese DoA2 is what the US version should have been ¬Ņ a fantastic arcade game that's been loaded up with extra goodies to make for a more rewarding home gameplay experience. Is it worth re-buying? Probably not ¬Ņ but if you've ignored (or rented) DoA2 in the past, chances are good that you'll get your money's worth from the import.
Mega Fun (Apr, 2000)
Dead or Alive 2 l√∂ste schon einige Streitereien in der Redaktion aus. Was soll man h√∂her bewerten, das opulente Grafikfest Soul Calibur mit seinen einsteigerfreundlichen Charakteren und den vielen, vielen Extras oder das ausgeteilte Dead or Alive 2 mit seinem Profi-Gameplay und dem neuartigen Vierspieler-Modus? Entscheidet selbst.
Gaming Age (Mar 21, 2000)
Team Ninja has made one of the finest fighting games to date. Dead or Alive 2 is a beautiful fighting game in every meaning of the word. The game looks great, plays great, and has enough personality to pull it to the top of the Dreamcast fighting library.
Futuregamez.net (Aug 08, 2000)
Dead Or Alive 2 is a remarkable title. The presentation, graphics, sound are superb, and the gameplay is rarely short of spectacular. Anyone who still has doubts about the power of the Dreamcast need only look at this title. If you haven't played your Dreamcast for a while now, this is the perfect opportunity to blow away the cobwebs and invite some friends over.
GameSpot (Mar 16, 2000)
While the game doesn't have the deep cache of options and unlockable rewards that Soul Calibur offers, minor quibbles aside, it makes up for it with reams and reams of gameplay. If you have enough gaming friends to maximize the tag-battle mode, you'll be hard pressed to find a better 3D fighter out there.
Planet Dreamcast (Mar 17, 2000)
Is Dead or Alive 2 the best fighting game on the Dreamcast? It depends on your own personal preference. Personally, I think Soul Calibur's crown is safe and sound. Is it one of the best fighting games on the Dreamcast? Definitely. And that's saying a lot, since the system has plenty of fighters to choose from. If you like Soul Calibur and/or Virtua Fighter 3TB, but are ready for something different, give DoA 2 a try.
Thunderbolt Games (Aug 12, 2004)
Overall, DoA 2 is a wonderful fighter for the Dreamcast, and any fighting game fan should make sure they add this one into their library if it isn't already in there. DoA 2 is a button-masher with class, something that other games simply wish they could be. Pick it up at any price, even if it is one of the most expensive Dreamcast games around still.
Meristation (Jul 10, 2000)
Dead or Alive nonetheless is a very impressive product for the Dreamcast, and only its lack of special surprises hold this game back from a perfect rating. But that doesn't mean it can't be worthy of 4 1/2 GiN Gems for its strong effort!
Armchair Empire, The (Sep 01, 2000)
DOA2 makes for some great high-intensity fighting. Both testing players’ reflexes and treating them to some incredible visuals, this game is a fabulous addition to the Dreamcast library.

Video Games (May, 2000)
IGN (Mar 16, 2000)
Dead or Alive 2 has so much going for it, you'd be a fool not to pick it up and give it a try. However, unless you've got some hardcore fighting friends, this will be gathering dust a lot sooner than Soul Calibur or Powerstone did.
Defunct Games (May 08, 2004)
In the end Dead or Alive 2 comes close to topping Soul Calibur, but doesn't quite hit it's mark (at least not like it did on the PlayStation 2). This has the workings for a classic fighting game, as well as some of the most innovative features in current fighting games, but it has a little more work to go before it's perfected. Close, but not quite in the same ballpark as Soul Calibur.
Gamer's Pulse (Jan 08, 2000)
This game is one of the premier fighting games to appear on the Dreamcast this year. If it does not beat Soul Calibur in your minds, it will come a very close second. With the easy controls, the wonderful graphics, and the many tweaks and additions, this is what future fighting games on the Dreamcast will be compared to. I have no reservations when I say I recommend this game to any Dreamcast owner.
Game Critics (Apr 01, 2000)
As much as I'd like to believe a 110lb, barely-legal babe like Lei-Fang in Dead Or Alive 2 could throw around pro-wrestler sized he-men, I know it simply isn't within the realm of possibility. It's that lack of credibility, along with all the sexual exploitation, that sets the digital women's movement (if you can really call it that) back another 10 years to when it first began with Street Fighter II. Still, there's no denying that amidst all the lusty thoughts and sweaty palms, this is one hell of a competent fighting game. Dead Or Alive 2 may not be revolutionary in its portrayal of empowered women nor even as a fighting game, but it is by far one of the most satisfying one in recent memory.
Gaming Target (Jun 22, 2000)
OK, let's face it, the replay contained in DOA2 lacks. After you get through all the different paths of the characters, and play the Tag and other modes to hell and back, the only true fun of this game after that is multiplayer, but that is still worth it.
WomenGamers.com (Apr 06, 2000)
Hardcore fight fans looking for the next big thing have found it. Though not as complex and deep (which could be a blessing for more casual gamers) as Soul Calibur, DoA2 is convincingly executed, delivers on many levels and is thoroughly satisfying. Still, there's no denying that amidst all the lusty thoughts and sweaty palms, this is one hell of a competent fighting game. DoA2 may not be revolutionary in its portrayal of empowered women nor even as a fighting game, but it is by far one of the most satisfying one in recent memory.
The Video Game Critic (Apr 18, 2000)
Dead or Alive 2 has it all. The music and sound could be better, but that doesn't detract from this high quality fighter.
Game Revolution (Mar 01, 2000)
Now don't get me wrong, if you have some friends, DOA 2 is absolutely worth it and I recommend it highly. This is one terrific two-player game, and it will have you jumping and yelling at some of the incredible fighting moments. But when your friend goes home, you'll notice that DOA 2 will quickly retire to the shelf...until the next round.
Gameplanet (Sep 10, 2000)
Dead or Alive 2 is not without its faults, which is why it has not obtained a perfect score. The story lines for each character are extremely weak and difficult to understand, and there are no extras to unlock (no Tekken-style sub-games or secret characters). There are a few costumes for each character to wear (some of them a bit dodgy), but this just isn't enough for an individual player to remain interested in the game for very long after completing it. If you have a friend (or preferably three) to play against, however, this game is highly recommended.
Eurogamer.net (UK) (Oct 24, 2000)
When the chips are down, Dead or Alive 2 is one of the best beat-em-ups on the Dreamcast, and rather amusingly, a lot of people whose opinions count rate it more so than they do the PlayStation 2 version, but without the added longevity of games like Powerstone and Soul Calibur, it'll be warming the shelf within a week or two.
Game Chronicles (Apr 06, 2000)
DOA2 looks and plays better than any other fighting game on the Dreamcast or any other system for that matter. If there had been more substance to go along with the dazzling presentation this title would be a "must buy". As it stands, this game is a 3-day rental if you are playing by yourself. If you have brothers or sisters, roommates, or friends who visit often then I highly recommend you add this title to your Dreamcast collection.
Gamezone (Germany) (Apr 27, 2001)
The Next Level (USA) (Apr 05, 2000)
In reality, Dead or Alive 2 is probably the second best 3D fighter available for the Dreamcast right now (Soul Calibur is still the best, in my opinion). That being said, it's still an amazing game, with a pace that's unrivaled even when stacked against the speedy 2D fighters. If you haven't already picked this sucker up, you better do it fast. It's a gorgeous game, with great character designs and an extremely fast pace... and if you refuse to get it, I'll send Zack the metallic Teletubbie to your house to give you the Stunner!
Gamekult (Aug 29, 2000)
