Gaming Age (Nov 01, 2000)
Metropolis Street Racer contains everything that makes a home driving game great, and more. It's the only racing game on a console that made me stay up for 7 hours straight, throughout the night trying to perfect myself, beat the challenges and basically be the best. Even though there are many other racing games available, however if you only can afford one, then Metropolis Street Racer should definitely be up your alley. Forget Lemans, forget Ferrari F355, forget Gran Turismo 2, and forget Ridge Racer V, this is the new king of racers. Both Daytona USA: Online and Gran Turismo 3 have a serious battle ahead of them. With over 250 tracks, brilliant music, beautiful cities, deep and insane game play, and many options and secrets, you have to ask yourself, am I a lucky Dreamcast owner or what?

There is a choice from any of three radio stations in each contry like Rock, Techno, Country or top ten. Plus the DJs announce each song and there are adverts as well as weather and traffic reports. WHEW! This game also has an eight player option for those little championships to be held at home. Two people race at a time and the winner moves up then the next two people race and so on. Races can also be customised like time of day, laps and weather like fog, rain or even thunderstorms. This game really is huge. It is a landmark for driving games as Gran Turismo was back in '98 and really is worthy a purchase of a cosole just to own what will be heralded as one of the greatest driving games ever. It's not about how fast you drive, its about how you drive fast. Buy it.
Game Vortex (Dec 08, 2002)
Nothing out there on console right now can touch Metropolis Street Racer for pure fun. Sure, there are games with deeper simulation, combat and fighting elements, or offroad tracks. But, as a complete experience, MSR sets a high-water mark for racing games. If you like racing, MSR justifies buying a Dreamcast, especially with the recently lowered system price. Some games deliver and make for enjoyable racing action, but MSR pretty much defines what a street racing game should be.

Game Freaks 365 (Jul 07, 2007)
Metropolis Street Racer is one of those games that keeps you coming back for more. The kudos system was nothing short of innovative and adds to the replay value infinitely. The multi-player is some of the best you will find from Dreamcast racers, as are the graphics. MSR has stood up well to time. Project Gotham Racing was largely based on it and aided the Xbox launch. History looks to be on the side of the folks as Bizarre.
Retroage (Dec 01, 2009)
Metropolis Street Racer to największe, najładniejsze i najbardziej satysfakcjonujące wyścigi stworzone dla Dreamcasta. Dużo tych naj, ale wierzcie mi, gra warta jest każdej godziny spędzonej przed telewizorem. Oferuje piękną grafikę, świetną muzykę i niezgłębione pokłady grywalności.

IGN (Jan 19, 2001)
I almost see Metropolis Street Racer as the racing game for people who don't like racing games. I say this because it seems to break too many conventions to keep the traditional fan happy, abut at the same time, it does such a good job at executing, it will convert almost anyone who really opens up to its charms. For the first time in recent memory, a title has managed to challenge the way I play titles in the genre, as well as the way I hope see them structured in the future. This game has a great sense of progression, difficulty and refinement throughout, and while it may be too difficult for people with little patience, it is one of the most rewarding gameplay experiences in the history of the genre. If you don't mind doing a little legwork, this game will really give you a run for your money....that much you can count on. Give it a look.

Metropolis Street Racer is most definitely not for the quick-fix gamer, however if you're out for a challenge and you haven't yet found a racer to steal your heart (and let's face it, there isn't one that could steal it better than this) then you'd be a fool to miss out on the opportunity to own possibly the best driving game ever made.
HappyPuppy (Feb 12, 2001)
Offering 250 separate challenges and an innovative reward points system, three well rendered and interesting cities with 80 tracks to race on, 40 cars from 13 manufacturers, and superlative graphics and sound throughout makes a strong case for Metropolis Street Racer's overall value. Now factor in the sound driving and physics model and you have a real cherry ride here. It's yet another feather in the ailing Dreamcast's cap; drive on over and pick it up today.

Defunct Games (Jun 24, 2006)
You don't have to be a fan of racing games to appreciate the quality of Metropolis Street Racer. The nuts and bolts of this game have lived on in the Project Gotham Racing series on the Xbox and Xbox 360. This is one of the best racing games on the Dreamcast, the type of game that raises the bar in almost every way.
Da Gameboyz (Jul 08, 2004)
Sega has produced another winner. With Bizarre Creations at the helm MSR turned out to be far above average. But I cannot help but note that with the length of the development time why were there some faults with the game? Regardless, with detailed graphics and an innovative scoring system, Metropolis Street Racer earns the Joystick up from this reviewer.
Video Games (Nov, 2000)
GamePro (US) (Jan 11, 2001)
Sega?s long awaited racing sim delivers remarkable visuals and realistic driving techniques like it promised, but tough gameplay makes MSR a difficult ride to enjoy on a long road trip. MSR takes you through the wicked streets of San Francisco, London, and Tokyo in over 40 fully licensed autos. Your goal is to get as many points as possible by taking first place on different tracks; the more points gained, the more cars and tracks open up. While MSR has some great features, it certainly isn?t every racer?s dream.
Gamekult (Nov 07, 2000)
GameSpot (Jan 16, 2001)
Metropolis Street Racer is a beautiful racer with accurate physics and tight control, but the kudos system makes it far more challenging than it needs to be. Those with short attention spans should rent this game first to see if they will enjoy the detail-oriented racing. Even those reared on the Gran Turismo series will find MSR to be a test of their fortitude. Metropolis Street Racer pretends to be a racing simulation by requiring perfect execution, but it fails to give you the desired customization options to make it worthwhile. In its attempt to appeal to both sides of the racing spectrum, Metropolis Street Racer ends up stuck in limbo.
The Video Game Critic (Feb 02, 2002)
My main problem with MSR is all the menus you need to trudge through. Even in the so-called "quick-start" option, it seems like you need to go through a dozen menus just to set up a two-player game. Not for the squeamish, MSR is a racer for gamers who crave a real challenge.
Planet Dreamcast (Jan 29, 2001)
As much as I wanted to like Metropolis Street Racer, I simply can't recommend it without reservations. There's no denying the game incorporates a lot of great ideas, and one can't help but appreciate the level of detail with which each environment is presented, but MSR's flaws drag it way down, preventing it from realizing its much anticipated potential. In trying too hard to create a racer that's everything for everybody, ten times the usual bells and whistles attached, Bizarre neglected to focus on polishing MSR's overall driving experience. Not that MSR is a bad game, but there are at least a few other Dreamcast racers I would have to recommend before it. Test Drive: Le Mans, anyone?
Game Revolution (Jan 01, 2001)
Metropolis Street Racer is one of those games that coulda, woulda, shoulda, but didn't. It introduces some great ideas and lets them fall flat. Maybe Bizarre will have another shot at making these ideas work in the future, but until then I'll just have to find a zarf for my finjan.
