Ultimately, it's a shame that Dreamcast owners have ignored Record of Lodoss War. While the game certainly has a few flaws that keep it just shy of greatness-namely the lack of online or even two-player mode--it compensates for them with some solid and addictive gameplay. This is one of those games that has all the earmarkings of a cult classic, a game where the whole is greater than the sum of the parts, a title that most gamers will ignore until it's no longer easy to find. While not for everyone, fans of the anime series and games like Diablo should certainly check this one out. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised with what you find.

Like I said above, Record of Lodoss War shares much with Angband; both are pretty simple visually, but both offer addicting gameplay. Not to say Record of Lodoss War and Angband are equally as good. With its excellent customization features, a huge assortment of items to find, and a good story to keep things interesting, fans looking for some meaty story for their PSO action will find Record of Lodoss War a very refreshing gameplay experience... and yes, there is actual closure to the ending as well, though you might have to play through it again.

It would be nice if you could save your place at any time, but the game only has predefined save points. The camera doesn't always give you the best angle, but you can adjust it to your heart's content. Record of Lodoss is an extremely well-crafted game, and I would highly recommend it to adventure fans.
Although it offers no multiplayer modes (which is disappointing considering the DC's online capabilities), Lodoss War is an impressive improvement over PC Diablo, so I don't really mind that it's a shameless rip-off. The control is superb; many action-RPG interfaces are clunky, but this one is very easy to learn and use. The graphics are some of the best in the genre. Your 3D characters' appearances change as you outfit them, and spells look great when they tear through the bad guys. The only problem here is the slowdown during big battles (and there's many of them), but don't let that stop you from trying this excellent game.
While the camera and frame rate could be improved, the game offers huge levels to explore and is incredibly addictive, especially considering the customization you can do with your weapons and items. Plus, there is the engrossing narrative. It's the kind of story that makes you want to complete the game and then go back and play again to see what you might have missed. If you're an action RPG fan, you won't be disappointed.

Overall, this game is well done, but with a few tweaks to the graphics and sounds, it could have been a very good game. As is, fans of the Lodoss War series as well as hack-n-slash role-playing nuts should definitely take notice.

Planet Dreamcast (Apr 18, 2001)
Record of Lodoss War isn't innovative, but the source material it is imitating is fun enough to survive a little dilution. Ultimately, Dreamcast owners looking for the Diablo experience on their console will have a good time with Record of Lodoss War.

GameSpot (Mar 23, 2001)
Record of Lodoss War is really a hard game to judge. On one hand, it re-creates the dungeon-faring hack-and-slash of Diablo nicely, and, as mentioned before, fans of that game looking for more need look no further. On the other hand, though, the game can be extremely repetitive, and its story elements aren't really strong enough to hold it up when the combat gets boring. Fans of the old anime series shouldn't buy it on the strength of the license alone, because no footage from the original animation is used in the game. In its place are a series of CG movies that look like they belong in a first-generation PlayStation game. The character element is also weak, beyond the occasional name recognition factor. In short form: If you like Diablo, you'll like Lodoss. If not, steer clear. Just don't pick it up expecting the anime itself in game form.
