Sega Rally 2 is by far the best looking and playing arcade racer you can buy for a home console. Some will say it's not the arcade... and they're right! In some respects the home version is better. There's really only one problem -- the inconsequential frame drop (more so the Japanese version ). Overall, Sega Rally 2 sets yet another software benchmark for the gaming industry.

I suggest you to buy this game even if you are not a huge racing game. This is Sega at its best, so get it now, for it is at a special price.
Sega Rally 2, while not the pinnacle of graphical achievement, has superior play mechanics and solid replay value. With 19 cars, 16 tracks, and many different racing conditions, Sega Rally 2 has a lot to offer racing fans. Enthusiasts will find the gameplay unmatched, but beginners may be intimidated by the steep learning curve.

But as a one player game, it succeeds brilliantly in bringing the arcade experience home and stocking it with all the features you could ask for. I've spent over thirty hours on the game now, and I can't think of any other game on the system that I'd like to pop out from time to time to give a quick run through. Rally 2 now stands alongside Soul Calibur as my most favorite game on the Dreamcast. Funny . . . the same exact thing happened when Rally 1 was it released for the Saturn way back in '95. A must buy title for fans of arcade-style racing.
Easily the most playable rally racer ever produced but surprisingly also one of the deepest and most challenging. Sega has lavished gamers with not only new modes and tracks but also new cars, options and editing features that are even less common in the most ambitious simulation racer. Sega Rally 2 is the most impressive conversion Sega has released on their past two consoles. The extra depth of the added features over the Arcade version gives this title much more playability and replayability.

While Ridge Racer 4 has a more exotic lineup of fictional cars, and Gran Turismo has an extensive list of vehicular customizations, Sega Rally 2 marries the qualities of super-fun arcade racing, challenging track elements and design, grease-monkey tinkering, and unparalleled replay value. Meet the new supermodel of armchair racing.
Mega Fun (Sep, 1999)

If you are not up for a serious challenge, you might as well not bother. Even the arcade mode is tough. You have to sit down and decide that you are willing to invest the time to learn all of the ins and outs of the cars and the tracks before you expect to win and even then it is going to be difficult. I was disappointed with the lack of Internet play and the frame rate issues but the game is still fun. It is the best racing game on the system without question but I really hope that the problems are in the programming an not the hardware.
CyberGames (Dec 10, 1999)
A very enjoyable racing game with excellent graphics. Loads of new cars, tracks, and features to keep you interested and increase replay value.
Planet Dreamcast (Dec 07, 1999)
Overall, Sega Rally 2 is an excellent racing game which proves Sega can do arcade conversions which have longevity and depth. The 10-year championship is a challenge worthy of any racing fan, so if you like racing games, give Sega Rally 2 a try if you haven't already.

Sega have come up trumps with another excellent coin-up conversion that will surely sell the Dreamcast by the car boot load!
Armchair Empire, The (Sep 01, 2000)
While extremely difficult, the game doesn't do so in any cheap sort of way. While playing it's easy to tell that if something goes wrong in a race it's the players fault. As such the game challenges its players to improve their skills so as to beat it. When all is said and done the game has fun gameplay and a wonderful aesthetic that make the title fun to play, even though it's difficult to master.
The bottom line is once again Sega has delivered a great conversion of an Arcade classic. While they added a lot more replay value in the form of an extended championship mode, they failed to alter it very much from the Arcade mode itself. Still, the game plays exceptional, contains a lot of tracks and more than enough cars.
Game Chronicles (Dec 29, 1999)
There are plenty of racing title available for the Dreamcast right now and while SEGA Rally 2 is perhaps the only off-road rally racing game out there (sorry - TNN Hardcore Heat doesn't qualify) you may be better off waiting for something else. SEGA is still promising an online version of this game in 2000 and maybe they will have perfected the controls and physics by then. Until then, SEGA Rally 2 should only be attempted by the most dedicated and extreme race drivers out there. You will need every bit of skill and patience you can muster to win or even enjoy this title.
Gamekult (Sep 18, 2000)
Defunct Games (Aug 15, 2004)
When Sega does wonders, they are invincible. Take a look at Virtua Fighter 2. However, when they are fallable, they are fallable, take a look at Virtua Fighter 3. As a gamer I always hope the sequel improves upon the things I didn't like, and retain what I loved about the original. I do not feel Sega's end of the bargain was met with Sega Rally 2.
The Video Game Critic (May 21, 2008)
The heart of Sega Rally 2 is its "10-Year Championship mode", which I'm hoping to complete by 2018. Last but not least, why oh why does this game consume a whopping 87 memory blocks?! Hell, I have to dedicate an entire VMU to this lousy game! Considering the greatness of the original Sega Rally, this can only be considered a massive disappointment.
