If you have the patience to endure the initial few hours, you'll be rewarded beyond all expectation. Only when you finish this first episode (several more are planned) will you look back and appreciate its power. The components that make Shenmue great don't seem anything special if judged alone. But in the context of the adventure, there isn't a weak moment to be found. Shenmue is never boring, and always fair - quite an achievement considering its scale. it's an unconventional blend of action and problem solving, which may seem awkward to some players, but if you're at home with most styles of game, this unique quest will enthrall you like nothing before.
Next Generation (Dec, 2000)
Few titles, perhaps none, have pulled off its blend of gameplay styles with such panache, and certainly no other game has ever offered such a rock-solid, completely realized, fully populated world. This will remain a high watermark for years.
Retrogaming.it (May 01, 2008)
Just Adventure (Jul 24, 2002)
Shenmue is one of those rare games that sells systems. In the short history of gaming, such games can be counted on one hand. Hundreds of thousands of consumers purchased 8- and 16-bit Nintendo consoles to explore the imaginative worlds of the Super Mario Brothers. Sonic the Hedgehog pricked his little blue quills into the hearts of tens of thousands of Sega Genesis owners, and Myst was responsible for millions of gamers either purchasing those newfangled CD-ROM drives or simply purchasing a new computer so they could find out what all the fuss was about firsthand.
GamesFirst! (Nov 23, 2000)
Yu Suzuki, the creator of Shenmue as well as lots of classic arcade games like Space Harrier and Hang On, has created a masterpiece. His world does make you feel like you’re living in it. The ad campaign currently running for Shenmue is entirely accurate – you’ll find yourself thinking about Ryo and his search for vengeance constantly, and you’ll wonder about whatever mystery you’re in the process of solving all day long until you can get back to your DC. Shenmue is not only a bold leap into the future of gaming, but it’s also a good hint of what the future of narrative and entertainment could hold. We can only hope that somewhere, somehow, some game developer lives up to the challenge of Shenmue.
Cincinnati Enquirer (Nov 15, 2000)
Shenmue's pacing can seem sluggish, especially to younger players or newcomers to dialogue-heavy adventures. But overall, Shenmue is one of the most immersive and gratifying games around.
If this title doesn't give Yu Suzuki that AIAS Lifetime Achievement award next year, I don't know what will. It will be really hard for me to wait another year for Chapter 2 to come out, as the end of Chapter 1 and its 5 discs (3 for the game, 1 as a Passport disc to analyze the game's extra features, music, movies, and game rankings, and a soundtrack disc which is only available in the Limited Edition) left me wanting so much more. Very few games do that to me, the only other that comes to mind is Metal Gear Solid, and it's for this reason that I am giving Shenmue a full six GiN Gems out of 5, which it so rightfully deserves!
Gaming Target (Nov 17, 2000)
Yu Suzuki really created a masterpiece with this, the first chapter of Shenmue, and I myself cannot wait for Chapter Two. This is a major stab in the stomach for all those PS2 fan boys out there.
Shin Force (Dec 29, 2000)
Yu Suzuki's creative masterpiece was worth every (advertised) delay. Shenmue's graphics and scope have no competition. With so many activities and events to enjoy, you may never fully complete this game. FREE is here to stay... Now bring on the next adventure!
Gamer's Pulse (May 08, 2001)
I’m pretty sure I’m only halfway through Shenmue, and I’m having an absolute blast adventuring through it. I have always been a lover of Console RPGs, and this new breed of hybrid between life, fantasy and realism, excites a gamer like myself. It hasn’t been since FF7 that I have been hooked so intently that I have played seven hours straight and forgotten the time. It’s the appeal to find out more, to solve the mystery, that pushes you on and forward into the dark realms of some incredibly evil stuff. It was generally hard to review this incredible game, as I obviously couldn’t squeeze everything great into under twelve pages, let alone put it in three. So, I advise you to go out right now, and purchase what can only be classed as a masterpiece. To end, I think the blurb on the back of the box says it best: Shenmue isn’t a game my friends, it’s an experience.
AllRPG (Jul 13, 2002)
Overall, this game is in a word, brilliant. This is a must have for the Dreamcast and anyone who has played it can tell you, it's awesome. If you feel that you can simply stick to Final Fantasy, one word crosses mine and everyone else’s mind...poor you.

His courage shall determine his fate. The path he must traverse, fraught with adversity, I await whilst praying. For this destiny predetermined since ancient times... A pitch, black night unfolds with the morning star as its only light. And thus the saga, begins..."
Da Gameboyz (Jul 08, 2004)
Shenmue is something that has to be experienced for people to fully understand. I can sit here and tell you what a wonderful, deep, emotional and entertaining game it is, but you have to actually play this masterpiece in order to appreciate it. Yu Suzuki had a dream that he entitled F.R.E.E, and this dream is now a reality. I fully recommend this game to every form of gamer out there, from the diehard to the casual gamer. Run to your nearest Videogame retailer, buy this game, set a lot of time aside and prepare yourself for a gaming experience you have never experienced before. Shenmue is an almost perfect title and definitely earns Da Gameboyz' Player's Choice award from this reviewer. Thank you Yu Suzuki, we are definitely not worthy.
GamesCollection (Oct 23, 2008)
Dream on.

Defunct Games (Jun 19, 2005)
Besides these minor setbacks, the game is a superb piece of artwork as well as a revolutionary step to many of the games today. It entails such a wide range of things to do that even when you finish Shenmue you could start it over and go about it in a completely different manner. It's hard to sum up one of Dreamcast's greatest works it ever produced, but if I had to, I'd say it is a historical landmark that will never lose its edge in the gaming world.
Gaming Age (Dec 04, 2000)
There are too many reasons as to why Shenmue is a game not worth missing. Besides being arguably the best looking/sounding game ever, it tells a great story, gives you plenty to see and do, and lastly, and places you in the most fully realized, living, breathing videogame world yet. While it definitely may not be for everyone (especially those who can't stand slower paced games), there should be enough "ohhhs and ahhhs" to please absolutely anyone in one way or another, including those who consider themselves only casual gamers. Shenmue may not be the best game ever created (it's up there), but a gaming experience no one should miss regardless.
Game Revolution (Jan 11, 2000)
The initial reactions I've seen for Shenmue have been mixed. Some love it and some hate it, but pretty much everyone can agree that it's a departure from the norm. The important thing to keep in mind about Shenmue is that it's an adventure game. The pacing can get slow and often you'll spend a great deal of time wandering around talking to people. This is not a good game for the impatient, quick-twitch action junkie. But it's a great game for everyone else. While Shenmue may not initially appeal to the mass gaming audience, it sure as hell appeals to me. This is truly a game that everyone needs to experience at least once. All it requires is patience, so keep this in mind.
Sega-16.com (Jul 17, 2020)
Almost twenty years after the original release of Shenmue, Rockstar Games launched Red Dead Redemption 2, a vast open-world game which, in its pursuit of an immaculately presented America, tasks the player with long horseback rides through empty stretches of land, elaborate animations that sacrifice speed for realism, severely restricted fast-travel options and, over its colossal running time, not a lot of action. It sold tens of millions and, like Shenmue at the time, achieved almost unanimous critical acclaim. There is no doubt in my mind that this Old West epic will be viewed very differently in twenty years’ time, with many future audiences deeming it unplayable. So it goes with Shenmue, which has always been brilliant. Its popularity ebbs and flows, but like the phoenix in the mirror, its soaring heights have already been engraved.
Video Games (Feb, 2000)
Faltering only over some minor control issues, rare but annoying moments of waiting, and lukewarm voice acting, Yu Suzuki’s ambitious Shenmue succeeds at creating a breathing world in which the potential for interaction is enormous. Time flows naturally, as Yokosuka’s inhabitants go about their daily lives and the weather patterns shift, serving to immerse the player completely in the most accurate representation of an urban landscape ever to grace a home console. Along with breathtaking cityscapes and an inspired direction that reaches new heights of realism and intricate detail, the gripping storyline and unique setting provide for the most compelling game in recent memory. Shenmue is a work of art, a living world neatly packaged on disc, and there is no reason for any Dreamcast owner to be deprived of its beauty.
RPGFan (Jan 20, 2000)
While there are a number of features that Shen Mue could've pulled off better, such as a better-paced story, a better set-up adventure system, and some bugs-fixing, there is nothing quite like it on any of the console systems that are out now, nor will there be for quite a long time. Shen Mue is an immense project that is the product of the work of over 200 people, a dozen companies, and even has the sponsoring of 4 major companies, including both Cola-Cola and Timex. The feats of Shen Mue will not be emulated for a long time, and that alone is worth the price of admission. With beautiful graphics and a fun battle system, make no mistake, Shen Mue is the reason why you got the DC early. And even if you have no intention of buying Shen Mue any time soon, at least try it out once. There is a good chance that you may change your mind soon after!
Lens of Truth (Sep 06, 2010)
Its been a while since any of us on the staff has fired this one up. I’m happy to say that after the initial shock of Shenmue no longer being the best looking game on the planet, it was still an extremely enjoyable experience. Even with some humorously bad (but awesome) voice acting, an overall slow pace, and not as much fighting as we’d like, Shenmue is a instant classic adventure game that everyone should play. The atmosphere and interactive world alone makes Shenmue worth your time, and the story is still one of the most captivating in gaming over the last 10 years. It’s also one of the the crown jewels in the underrated Dreamcast library. If you can, you must experience it for yourself.
Shenmue is like no other game ever made. It's not perfect, and it doesn't do EXACTLY what it sets out accomplish, I admit. But it's unique enough and does its job well enough that pretty much every gamer on the planet who prefers story and character to mindless shooting will be immediately and addictively drawn into this game. Buy it. Play it. LIVE it!
Eurogamer.net (UK) (Jan 23, 2001)
Like the real life that it tries so hard to emulate, you only get from Shenmue whatever it is that you put into it. If you stick rigidly to the plot and try to get to the end of the game in a hurry, you will be shockingly disappointed (not least because this is only the first chapter of a much longer saga, so the story is not wrapped up at the end) by the game; but if you take the time to explore, and allow yourself to be sidetracked by the wonders of the world of Shenmue, you'll experience one of the most compelling and unusual gaming experiences ever created. While this is certainly not the last word in gaming which some enthusiasts had hoped for, it may well be the first word in a whole new page in videogaming history.
This is perhaps a game that's unfairly misunderstood by the majority of the press and public alike, and shouldn't be compared to franchises such as Final Fantasy or Metal Gear Solid. Those looking for usual adventure and RPG fare are probably going to be disappointed, as Shenmue can't easily be defined or categorised. For such an important project, the fact that it harbours ambitions to try something new is somewhat of a surprise. And for the most part, it succeeds.
Gamestyle (Jul 12, 2008)
The 'parameters' of the experience have not been moved, halted, or half-heartedly attached. Everything is as it should be. Crucial to the world of Shenmue - and to the living legacy of Yu Suzuki.
GamePro (US) (Nov 24, 2000)
Still, Shenmue is one of the great gaming experiences for any system, period. The replay value is also extremely high due to all the various things you can miss the first time. While PS2 owners have to wait for the blockbuster titles to appear for their system next year, Dreamcast owners have their killer ap right now.
I’m not entirely sure why I like Shenmue as much as I do. It’s an amalgam of the gorgeous environments, feeling of immersion, and the need to find out just what happens around the next corner. It’s not a perfect game, and is perhaps a little too weak in the true "gameplay" department for some, but I found it highly entertaining.
RPG Land (Nov 16, 2003)
In conclusion, Shenmue is a very memorable game which may move slowly at times and not pack much of an ending, but flaws like that just end up fading into the shadows of its wonderful qualities. One would be justified in buying a Dreamcast just for Shenmue.
Planet Dreamcast (Nov 23, 2000)
Sega has a lot riding on Shenmue. For the past year or so, Sega has released an astounding number of first-rate titles, and in spite of this, the PlayStation 2 has dominated the spotlight to an absurd extreme. Shenmue marks Sega's big attempt to grab some of that spotlight back for itself. If you've been following the gaming press, you've probably heard quite a bit about Shenmue already. At E3 2000, the big, annual video game expo, Sega's Shenmue demo parodied the PlayStation 2's flashy technology demos outright. The rotating head of an old man spun slowly onscreen, showing off the intricate details of the face and hair that mockingly referenced the Square-designed PS2 head. This was Sega's message to the faithful that its Dreamcast was not about to buckle under to the corporate behemoth that is Sony.
Video Games (Dec, 2000)
(PAL version)
Armchair Empire, The (Dec 29, 2000)
Shenmue is a very different game in how it hybridizes genres, while throwing in a very cinematic experience. Those who like a nice, slow paced mystery to sink their teeth into will enjoy this title. Those who prefer something fast won’t find it here.
Edge (Nov 29, 2000)
Shenmue is much more than an interactive movie, but certainly does not deliver the freedom expected. It’s involving, and ultimately rewarding, but only represents a step towards what may be possible in the future, rather than the milestone Edge hoped for.
Thunderbolt Games (Dec 17, 2004)
So should you buy this game? If you’re in the mood for a deliberately paced adventure game with some moments of incredible action, then you should definitely check this game out. The Japanese setting and the life-like world make this one of the more original games out there. The game is a bit on the short side (15-20) and the cliffhanger ending may turn off some, so just remember this is the first of a trilogy. Shenmue is far from being one of my favorite games, but it’s certainly one of the most memorable.
RPGamer (2000)
All in all, Shenmue can be described as fairly well balanced and fun, albeit oddly paced. In terms of story, depending on how its' sequel unfolds, it may be the best and most thorough prologue the gaming world has ever seen. If however poor sales prevent such a sequel, it will merely go down in history as a story tragically devoid of any closure. In any event however, it is the most engrossing and realistic game ever created to date, making it worth a look if nothing else.
Gamezilla (Jan 07, 2001)
Shenmue is a terrible game held up by an incredible engine. It has a decent story, but leaves much to be desired in the gameplay area as well as overall freedom and flexibility. Graphically, it is an achievement and one that should be lauded highly. The combination of these "qualities" unfortunately only preserves the status quo fashioned by id Software. Like id, Shenmue's team has fashioned an incredible gaming engine, built an amazingly detailed world using it, yet have failed to make a remarkable game.
Gamekult (Nov 20, 2000)
Yes, Shenmue has some faults, but it is a game that really needs to be experienced. You can't play for 10 minutes and make a decision on whether you like it or not. The beginning is slow as it has you running around in circles talking with people who don't know anything. Game time will also have to be wasted as you have wait for night to fall and the bars to open up before some characters can be found. However, the game picks up toward the end of the first disc and that is when you can't stop playing. It is easy to get hooked to the point where you might not stop playing until you complete the game, which can be done faster than one would hope.
Power Unlimited (Jan, 2001)
GameSpot (Jan 11, 2000)
Just like the summer letdown D2, Shenmue is not for everyone. It's a game rich in story, visuals, and environmental stimuli, but light on overall gameplay. Fans of whodunits and RPGs will take quicker to the game's overall premise, but there is enough to please the casual gamer as well. Indeed, while Shenmue is revolutionary, the game is far from perfect. Its QTEs aren't as cool as Dance Dance Revolution's, its fighting isn't as diverse as Virtua Fighter's, and the game's main quest is overwrought with contrived situations. Regardless of its many shortcomings, though, Shenmue is an adventure worth experiencing - provided you have the time to invest.

Finally, although the streets are teeming with people, they often appear and disappear out of thin air, hurting the realism. But overall Shenmue is a quality game that really pushes the envelope. It's a bit slow and methodical, but if you don't mind the detective work, you'll find it quite satisfying.

Overall, I'd love to give this game a nice, high score. I'd love to say, "Shenmue is truly a benchmark game, and everyone should own it," but the flaws are there, and I can't ignore them. What I'll have to say, instead, is this: Shenmue is truly a benchmark game. The world and its complexity is flawless, easily the most impressive, real, and interactive world I've ever seen. However, the game itself looks for all the world like a little bit tacked on to test how well the engine works - it's very hard for me not to think of it that way given 90% of the game is walking around talking to people. It's a benchmark game... but it's not worth buying.

Shenmue isn’t relatively long; I completed the game in about 20 hours, if not less. I remember hearing that Shenmue could be endless, but I can’t see how anyone could enjoy the mini-games for that long. In almost every way, Shenmue is a disappointment, and I can only hope they get it right with Shenmue 2.
While the effort (and budget) is very evident, this game proves only one thing; real life doesn't translate well into a video game, no matter how ambitious it may be. While definitely a game that is easy on the eyes, the methodical pace will be enough for most people to turn towards more fast paced, and enjoyable, style of gameplay.
