Although pretty useful at what it does, Surf Rocket Racers is by no means the best in its sparsely populated field, and has difficulty keeping up with a game released nearly half a decade ago. The simplistic style actually works against it, and with so little to do, if you'll pardon the pun, it's just too shallow for its own good.
60 (Apr 13, 2001)
Planet Dreamcast (Mar 12, 2001)
Overall it seems the game's attempts at arcade racing are very flawed, through poor level design which completely misses the scope for amazing "in your face" arcade levels, poor unrewarding game physics and also through badly implemented extra modes. Looking at Nintendo's Waverace64, or even Sega's Model 2 arcade offering Wave Runner, shows how an arcade jet-ski racer should properly be created - no holds barred. Overall a bitterly disappointing game.
Consoles Plus (Feb, 2001)
HappyPuppy (Mar 15, 2001)
The only thing this game has going in its favor is the numerous bonus modes. There's a whole plethora of Crazy Taxi and Virtua Tennis inspired mini-games, most of which are more fun than the main game itself. While this certainly helps the replay value, replay generally implies the initial existence of play, and there's little of that here. Perhaps if you can get over the fact that it's not Wave Race 64, you might be able to get a rental's worth of fun out of it. But the experienced wave racer will find nothing but frustration and disappointment.
Water is one of the most unusual substances on earth; the harder you hit it, the more resistance it offers. Surf Rocket Racers finds this out the hard way by doing a solid belly flop on the Dreamcast. Although it closely resembles Hydro Thunder in its aqua-colored theme, it lacks HT's polished graphics and attention to detail. Instead, Surf Rocket Racers boasts only a few tracks, no interesting shortcuts, uninspired gameplay and a generally soggy experience. Players will master the game's few tricks in seconds and grow bored in minutes. It could have been an interesting game with a little more imagination, but it's flatter than month-old soda.
GameSpot (Mar 01, 2001)
Surf Rocket Racers is what happens when a game developer takes a stock game formula and simply goes nowhere with it. Granted, Jet Ski games are few and far between, but the overall bland experience that Surf Rocket Racers offers hardly even warrants a rental.
All in all, Surf Rocket Racers feels like a title that was released for no other reason than to earn some quick money from unsuspecting consumers. It doesn't even try to compete with the great games in the genre, and as a result, ultimately fails.
The Video Game Critic (Apr 13, 2001)
The scenery is static and lacks detail, and the Amazon jungle looks particularly bad. The water effects are hardly convincing, and there's minimal splashing. Gameplay is similar to Hydro Thunder, but without turbo boosts and short cuts, resulting in races that are pretty boring. Even flying off Niagara Falls seems ho-hum. On the positive side, control is good, and you can use a steering wheel controller. But overall, Surf Rocket Racers is weak and forgettable.
