Defunct Games (Aug 13, 2005)
Despite my aforementioned gripes, this is a game that deserves a spot in your collection if you have even the slightest inkling towards fighting games. It's sort of a tough find these days, so you might end up paying a lot. Even with this in mind, Tech Romancer is one game that is worth searching the world for.

Although fundamentally similar to traditional 2D Capcom fighting games, Tech Romancer expands on the over-the-top gameplay style of Rival Schools. This time, however, Capcom has enlisted the aid of a giant fleet of robots to do the scrapping, and it works out great. While these guys aren't as nimble as the Street Fighter cast, Kikaioh injects a lot more fun into the gameplay than games like Virtual On: Oratorio Tangram. While that game is good fun in its own right, the all-consuming atmosphere Tech Romancer provides more than makes up any of its shortcomings. Hopefully, Capcom won't let this one slip away into a one-shot, as it did with Cyberbots. A game that carries the level of polish, playability, and fun that Tech Romancer does deserves to see a handful of sequels, each building on the mythos established here.
Tech Romancer's attractive graphics, destructible environments, and the uniqueness of each mecha are its strong points. The enemy AI in single-player mode is fairly weak, but as a two-player game, the variety of moves provides for attack/counter marathons.

Tech Romancer is a great lighthearted, anime influenced title. It’s easy to get into and has a great deal of charm. Good stuff!
Planet Dreamcast (Jun 20, 2000)
Tech Romancer is a great surprise from Capcom. Its Japanese stylings and superb character design are easy on the eyes, and the simple yet addictive gameplay is a blast. While there's not a lot of depth, the wealth of unlockable secrets should keep you going for a while. If you're looking for a unique 3D fighter to add to your collection, you could do a lot worse than Tech Romancer.

Tech Romancer is that it will be a niche title. This will be one of those games that didn't sell 1 million copies but it made you happy to own that system. Pick the game up, you won't be disappointed, at least give it a try out because its great to see Capcom bringing their more obscure titles over seas.

Pure spectacle. Pure fun. And although play modes are limited to Versus and Story, extras are unlockable through VMU games and masterful fighting.

Capcom have hardly revolutionized the beat em up genre with this new installment, but since when was revolution part of the deal? What they have done is produced a well polished videogame, the presentation is slick and reminiscent of the anime that makes it way out of Japan. It could be argued that the last thing the Dreamcast needs now is yet another beat em up. But as this comes from the most prolific developer in the genre, and surprisingly, doesn't feature their most famous intellectual property, some extra attention is due. Tech Romancer makes a worthy addition to anyone's videogame library, its solid game play and quirky humour are a good antidote to the usual po-faced beat em ups of late.
HappyPuppy (Jun 12, 2000)
As it is, Tech Romancer is a furious and fast-paced fighter that only solidifies Capcom's rep as king of the brawlers.
Mega Fun (Aug, 2000)
The Video Game Critic (Feb 11, 2012)
The game includes story, hero, and versus modes, and high scores are saved. Tech Romancer is one of those oddball fighters that offer a different take on the genre. It's by Capcom, and it's on the Dreamcast, so you'll probably want to play this.
Gamekult (Oct 12, 2000)
