DROD: Journey to Rooted Hold accomplishes what many games try to attempt: extremely straightforward gameplay that is deeply strategic. First, the game has very simple and easy to learn controls, which makes the game accessible to the masses. Second, the objectives are clear. The solutions are not adventure-like impossible, unrealistic answers. You won’t need to smash endless supplies of pots to uncover the one switch you need to unlock a door in a room three screens away. You certainly will not need to grind sea salt on a tombstone in order to make a building collapse. Third, the game is difficult without being frustrating. The levels seem easy, but some do require some upper-level thinking. In a world where simplistic shooting games are all the rage, it’s nice to find a game that exercises your brain instead of your itchy trigger finger.

Puzzle fans whose game collection do not include a version of DROD should go and get one right now. The only question mark that I would have over 'Journey to Rooted Hold' is whether or not it has enough extra content over the freely available DROD versions to warrant the price. At the end of the day $20 is not a lot for a game this good, and one that you could well still be playing in a couple of years from now.

DROD:JtRH is a quality bit of gaming. I've found myself redoing a single room dozens of times in a row before I'll get it just right and not caring that, well, I just played a single room dozens of times. For some reason, that same amount of effort would drive me insane in a platformer or any other action game, but with DROD I'm happy to do it. Maybe it's because I really feel like when I'm finished I've accomplished something or maybe because Caravel's done an awesome job putting the title together; either way, with Deadly Rooms of Death I'm a glutton for punishment.

Let's see. Deadly Rooms of Death - Journey to Rooted Hold is one of the most curious games that I've played to this day. At first glance, it appears to be some kind of dungeon crawl RPG akin to Nethack, but soon after you start playing, you'll discover that DROD - Journey to Rooted Hold is a very complex and challenging puzzle game. In other words, it's a Rolepuzzling Hack & Slash.
