Only the occasional glitch will remind you that EDF is a budget title. In one instance, a bug was hiding under an overpass, but you could see parts of its body jutting through the road above. Another time my soldier appeared to inexplicably take flight, when in fact he was swimming (with the camera situated underneath). It may be a little rough around the edges, but Earth Defense Force is still exceptional. Incorporating simple controls, substantial firepower, and amazing eye candy, this is a break-through shooter for the 360.
Xbox 360Gaming Age (2007)
In the end, EDF 2017 is just but a simple game that pits man against an unstoppable alien menace with a whole lotta guns. Whether or not you dig the Ed Wood production values, it's hard to deny the massive amounts of action, adventure, and mind-boggling fun that can be had in the fulfilling campaign. Besides, it's a good place to start for American gamers unfamiliar with the franchise—because if the next game takes the same path as Earth Defense Force 2, the franchise could become a new cornerstone of shooting lore.
Xbox 360GotNext (Apr 10, 2007)
It's worth doing, though, because Earth Defense Force is pure awesome fun. It shows its budget nature on a regular basis, with silly physics, limited enemy types, a ridiculous amount of clipping (especially with debris), a variable framerate, and a handful of huge battlefields that get recycled endlessly. The gameplay is so fun and polished though, that these issues just don't matter, and the only nagging flaw ends up being the lack of online multiplayer. Thankfully, there's single-screen co-op available, so it's not a total wash. Whether in single or multiplayer, the fast action, perfect controls, and amazing 50's schlock sci-fi atmosphere is a joy to play in, and the levels have that "just one more" feel that's the hallmark of all the best games. Earth Defense Force is an addictive blast, and honestly that's all I've ever asked from any game.
Xbox (UK) (Apr 05, 2007)
You may think that Robotron x Rampage + Serious Sam doesn't equal ACEIOSITY.

You might believe violence solves nothing when - in fact - it solves over fifty levels of action, across multiple difficulty levels.

You may have friends and family who are ants. I understand. It's difficult.

You might not like smiling.

You might be stupid. Because there's always that, isn't there?

If none of these apply, you've got no bloody excuse.
Xbox (May 04, 2007)
Well the price is certainly a factor in deciding an overall score. At full price this would be ridiculed and mocked, a dodgy frame rate and animation alongside some awful voice acting does not help matters. However, based on gameplay alone this game is great and if you like no-nonsense shooters like Serious Sam then you’ll love this. If not then by now you’ll have decided this isn’t for you anyway, and besides it wasn’t made for people who want a serious game. It was made for people who like to shoot ants with a large rocket launcher. Next time give these guys a huge budget and let’s see what they can really do.
Xbox 360JustPressPlay (Jun 17, 2007)
Even though I love this game, I still have to address the flaws that run pretty rampant in EDF2017. It is a budget title, after all. Getting stuck is most definitely not fun, no matter what price you paid for the game. And collision detection just doesn't feel... right. Overall, EDF is a good game for a cheap price. Make sure you have a friend with you though, as EDF is missing Live compatibilty.
Xbox (May 08, 2007)
Monoton, trashig, langweilig? Nein!

What starts life looking like a repetitive experience soon becomes addictive, add the welcoming online community and you have a game which will keep you going for many hours.
Xbox 360UOL Jogos (Apr 12, 2007)
Xbox 360VGcore (Aug 21, 2007)
With 53 missions of shooting and running, one would think that it gets old after a while. Maybe for some, but honestly many may find the game much more fun than their more complicated counterparts. It's unexplainable. It is what it is really, and what it is is fun, and is that not what games are about?
Still, the sense of mass chaos, sheer number of attacking enemies and the ability to make the player feel like they’re in full control of it all keep EDF at its peak. With a partner, this one is a perfect time waster in short or extended sessions. This is as epic as a budget release could ever imagine being, and in some ways, handles this task better than some heavily-hyped, mega-dollar release.
Xbox 360Deaf Gamers (May 30, 2007)
If you're looking for an arcade-style third person shooter then Earth Defence Force 2017 is well worth the asking price. Incidentally the asking price is a modest £24.99 and can even be found online for as low as £17.99 which is an absolute bargain. The game may lack a deep storyline and the AI may lack the finesse that you've come to expect from most shooters these days but Earth Defence Force 2017 swaps frills for thrills and in many respects is all the better for it. Whether you're playing solo or with a friend the game is a lot of fun and quite unlike anything else on the Xbox 360 at the moment. At the bargain price this is going for, every 360 gamer should give it a go.
Xbox 360Armchair Empire, The (Mar 27, 2007)
Earth Defense Force 2017 overcomes its weaknesses by being brainless and ridiculous fun. It’s as simple as that. Play, have fun. For a measly $40US any action fan or B-movie enthusiast can be enjoying themselves right now with this game.
Xbox 3601UP (Mar 21, 2007)
If there's a heaven, I think it's full of giant spiders and rocket launchers. It's a place where skyscrapers collapse if you breathe on them too hard and you never run out of ammunition. When I die, I want to go to Earth Defense Force 2017.
Xbox 360GamesRadar (Mar 20, 2007)
Then, it's easy to see what this is: a corny, geeky dream come true that's destined to be an underground classic.
Xbox 360GameSpy (Mar 20, 2007)
While it doesn't one-up the awesome EDF2, Earth Defense Force 2017 is still a great game in its own right, particularly for those who haven't played the previous title. It's a unique, well-realized action game that's like nothing else on the 360. If EDF2 didn't exist, we'd like it even more.
Xbox 360XboxAchievements (Aug 04, 2007)
While EDF most certainly won’t win any gaming awards, they also don’t have a category for “Most Enjoyable” which is truly a shame, because this could have a great shot at the title.
Xbox 360Gamigo (May 30, 2007)
Xbox 360Game Chronicles (Apr 07, 2007)
If Earth Defense Force 2017 were a movie, Ed Wood would have directed it. It would star Bruce Campbell. The folly artists would be hard at work with the pots and pans of your average kitchen. The special effects would come courtesy of the cheap toys and props of your garden-variety dollar store. This is a “B” movie from start to finish, it’s about as cheesy, hokey and ridiculous as they come and it’s totally awesome!
Xbox 360FiringSquad (Mar 26, 2007)
Let me state this upfront; this game will not be to everyone’s taste. However if you want to just sit down on the couch and feel the rush of bringing down a huge alien spaceship or blowing up hordes of alien bugs with rockets or grenade launchers Earth Defense Force 2017 certainly fits the bill. It’s too bad that the game doesn’t look better or doesn’t have online multiplayer support; improvements in both areas might have boosted this game’s score into the low 80s. As the game stands, however, it’s a surprise that a Japanese import title with a relatively low price is as entertaining as this game turned out to be.
Xbox (Jun 08, 2007)
Xbox 360GameSpot (Mar 22, 2007)
As archaic and clumsy as it can be, Earth Defense Force 2017 succeeds because of what a ridiculous bit of dumb fun it is.
PS (Jan 24, 2013)
Xbox 360The Review Busters (2007)
Earth Defense Force 2017 is the best kept secret on the Xbox 360. Some Xbox 360 users might be turned off with the lack of Xbox Live features but with a game that can be as addictive as Halo how can you say no? Whenever you do play this game just make sure you don't play too long, the loading time in-between some levels may annoying you a lot, plus some of the enemy AI in this game can lead to some extra minutes in certain wide area stages. In general Earth Defense Force 2017 is worth the try. Being able to destroy giant ants and spiders is too fun, make sure you don't pass this game up.
Xbox 360Netjak (Jan 09, 2008)
Now, I know this review went up and down, but that is what you get when you play Earth Defense Force 2017. You are going to want to hate it, but the simplicity and mindless fun behind it will probably have you coming back. This game had generic graphics and animation, dry gameplay mechanics, and voiceovers that will make you want to yank an ear off, but the bottom line is, it was fun, and that is what gaming in general is all about, so I have to give it a better than mediocre score. I won’t say you should run out and snatch the first copy you see, but this is one of those games that would be great to have around if you’re looking for a quick fix; a filler game for those times when you’re not looking for the intricacy of Oblivion or the simplicity of Bankshot Billiards. The best thing you can do is give it rental and make your own assessment, but all in all, Earth Defense Force 2017 is a title you will either love for the fun it brings or hate for its surface.
Xbox (Nov 07, 2007)
Xbox 360IGN (Mar 20, 2007)
It's tough to give a game like this a score. It's a fun game for sure, but a flop from the technical standpoint. Let's be clear here. If you're looking for a big budget shooter with a great story and flashy graphics, GRAW 2, Rainbow Six: Vegas or Gears of War will deliver your needs a thousand times better than Earth Defense Force 2017. It doesn't hold a candle to some of the more technically savvy games on Xbox 360 and that may be more than ample reason to give this one a pass depending upon your tastes. For good mindless shooting, this game delivers. If you can look past the technical issues, there is a lot of fun to be had here. Now if somebody could dish out the money to bring this game up to speed, we'd be in business.
Xbox 360GamingExcellence (Apr 23, 2007)
If you enjoy old-school shooters in the vein of Contra or more recently, Serious Sam, you could certainly do worse than EDF 2017. Those who demand a little depth and storyline to go along with their blasting are advised to look elsewhere. Since the game is best played in short bursts, it feels like the game would likely be more at home on a portable system like the PSP. However, when I played the game in front of a few friends, they were constantly screaming at me that I was getting surrounded by ants and yelling "constructive" advice in my direction. Any game that can elicit that sort of reaction from an inactive audience must be doing something right. It's also nice to have a new 360 game released with a reasonable price tag.
Xbox 360Xboxdynasty (XD) (Jul 02, 2007)
Xbox 360GBase - The Gamer's Base (Jan 14, 2008)
Xbox (Jun 15, 2007)
As the film Supersize Me demonstrated, Man does not live (long) by McDonald's alone; sometimes, though, that Quarter Pounder with Cheese satisfies like nobody's business. Earth Defense Force 2107 isn't a great game, but it's a really fun one and unlike the grease bomb you score from the local burger emporium, it won't have any long-term deleterious impact on your health.
Xbox (Nov 05, 2007)
PS (Jan 15, 2013)
EDF is a decent game that will give you some enjoyment for a few hours, and as long as you don’t mind the repetitiveness of the missions, there’s just enough story here to make you interested in finding out how it all shakes out. However, the simple and repetitive nature of the game means you’ll probably only play it once, beat it, and then forget about it, because there is no reason to go through it all again, even on a harder difficulty level or multiplayer, which is just the same missions with human players instead of AI. For all that, I would still have recommended this game, because if you’re just looking for a game that’ll give you a good weekend of fun, it has that capability. However, I do find the $39.99 price tag on PSN a little steep given the complete lack of depth and long-term playability. I’d wait for this one to hit the bargain bin.
Xbox 360Game Couch (Dec 26, 2007)
The way you feel about Godzilla movies is probably a good indicator of how you’ll feel about Earth Defense Force 2017. If you don’t mind giant monsters stumbling around fake looking cities being attacked by inefficient troops, then Earth Defense Force 2017 is the game for you. On the other hand, if you think B-movie equals bad movie, then pass this one up.
Xbox 360Game Captain (Dec 22, 2007)
Xbox 360Cheat Code Central (2007)
I feel that Earth Defense Force 2017 is a game that's pros and cons are truly in the eye of the beholder. Yes, I know that's somewhat true for every game, but it strongly applies here. If you're into run-and-gun, thoughtless action then I'd say check out EDF 2017. If you want to destroy hundreds and hundreds of bad guys with hundreds of weapons, I'd say check out EDF 2017. However, EDF 2017 can't hold a technical candle to big budget shooters like GRAW 2 or Rainbow Six: Vegas and for some that's reason to steer clear. For balls to the wall, mindless shooting this game will satisfy, if you can focus on the destruction you cause and not the technical short comings. If Sandlot and D3 could get a generous loan, I'm sure they could attract a lot more people with what they could produce.
PS VitaDiehard GameFan (Jan 14, 2013)
Earth Defense Force 2017 Portable is a strong Vita port of the Xbox 360 original that adds in solid new content and online play while retaining all the charm of the original, and while it’s not the most slick game and fans of the original may find it a bit of a retread, it’s still a pretty good game overall.
