In Else Heart.Break() you play as Sebastian, who must leave his parents' home to start his first job as a salesman for a soda company. In order to do that, Sebastian gets a ship to Dorisburg, where he is supposed to find his job contact.
Once there, Sebastian meets the locals — people who have their own jobs and routines in the town of Dorisburg. He makes friends with a rebel hacker group, and learns how to hack computers and many other objects in the world. The group gives Sebastian a few missions and quickly gets in trouble. The players guide Sebastian to experience if he can defy the town's rulers, escape with his life and maybe find love among his peers.
A big part of the game consists in writing pieces of code (usually modifying bits already written) to solve puzzles and allow for new powers for objects which Sebastian owns. For that reason, some characters actually teach you the basics of coding and provide you with hacking tools. Notoriously, there is no "quest log" or "automatic map" — the player is provided with an in-game, unchangeable paper map and must write down all objectives as soon as they are given, possible as text files inside the disks in his inventory.
