F-Zero GX is one of the most unconventional console racing titles in existence. It is a perfect blend between arcade racing and Gran Turismo-like racing. GX is not for wimps, but rather for people with fast reflexes, good memory, control, and patience. Video game die-hards will find GX as one of the most challenging racing games ever, yes, even harder than Midnight Club 2 (although they have two different racing concepts). While some racers force you to find short cuts to defeat your opponents, GX forces you to use unsurpassable speed and finesse.
Game Chronicles (Sep 11, 2003)
Amusement Vision has created what may well be the perfect GameCube title. With its amazingly complex racing model even experienced gamers are in for a substantial learning curve and newcomers to the series will be in for quite a shock. Visually stunning and a total blast to play, F-Zero GX is a racing game that no GameCube owner should be without.

I know it's impossible for everyone to have every great game that's released. However, there are a few games in this world that go beyond everything else and thus should not be missed, even if it means sacrificing some of the other games that are being released in between these masterpieces. Do whatever you can to get it. Beg your parents for an early Christmas present. Ask your boss to be paid early. Tell the utility companies you'll send them a check next time. Crazy or not, anything is worth trying, so do yourself a favor and come up with a way to put F-Zero GX in your 'Cube.

For those who have never heard of F-Zero, here’s a little explanation: In F-Zero’s almost 14 year old existance, hardly anything has changed to the concept; You race on a track in futuristic cars at incredible high speed, while trying to evade mud spots, bombs, lava and more. Also try to take as many boosts as possible, jump through the air, and knock your enemies off the track. Does it sound a little complicated to you?

Netjak (Sep 02, 2003)
So how does the new F-Zero game hold up to expectations? In all, it stands on its own pretty well. I must admit that few games leave my hands sweaty and clenched around the controller like F-Zero GX does. The difficulty level may scare away some new players (and maybe even some old ones), but it’s a fun ride even when you’re not winning. While Story Mode is a bit disappointing, and the frustration level might cut the replay value a bit short, everything else about this game is pure gold and completely true to the F-Zero name. If you’re a fan of racing games, or even if you’re not, F-Zero GX should be in your GameCube collection. After all, if it wasn’t hard, it wouldn’t be worth playing.
IGN (Aug 22, 2003)
There are a couple miniscule issues to speak of here (a few less than spectacular tracks, a daunting difficulty), but those noted F-Zero GX is still my favorite racer this generation, by far. Its sense of speed is unparalleled, its control mechanics unmatched, its level design mesmerizing, and its graphics and audio presentations superb. Meanwhile, its exclusive new Story Mode -- full of great FMV cut-scenes and very difficult courses -- is wholly entertaining from beginning to end. And that's to say nothing of the Garage Mode and multiplayer modes, which will extend replay value for weeks if not months.

If you're unfortunate enough to be jaded by futuristic racers such as this, then the chances are F-Zero GX probably isn't going to change your mind. All the customisation modes and corny storylines in the world doesn't change the fact that you're racing around a track, largely playing by the same rules you did all those years ago, albeit with a shinier backdrop. On the other hand, if you're a racing game fan who's a newcomer to the series, then we'd advise you to do everything you can to get this game; even if that means splashing out for a Cube to do so. You too can then find out what it truly means to be hooked. Time to get my next fix...

NintendoWorldReport (Sep 30, 2003)
F-Zero GX is a deep game with several gameplay modes and a trove of unlockables. Adding in the level of difficulty, you can expect to be playing this one for a long time. It’s a wild ride that lives up to the series in every way and manages to add a few new ideas to the F-Zero playbook. It also happens to be the best racer on GameCube, a title not to be ignored for the lack of strong competitors. As long as you’re willing to invest some effort into developing your skills, F-Zero GX is worth buying even if you don’t normally get into racing games.
Factornews (Feb 16, 2004)
Nintendo Life (Aug 08, 2010)
With an unparalleled sense of speed, rewarding progression and addictive gameplay, F-Zero GX is by far and away the number one racer for the GameCube. Sega’s Amusement Vision studio really pushed the boat out in terms of crafting a finely tuned experience; the brutal difficulty may put off more casual players, but those with the skill and the stones to stick with it will find a deceptively deep game with near endless replay value. F-Zero has come a long way since its Mode 7-powered inception on the SNES and F-Zero GX is the pinnacle of the series. When it was released back in 2003 it was the fastest game around and all these years later other racing games are still playing catch up.

Video Game Talk (Jan 09, 2004)
Although some of the races are frustratingly difficult, it's usually the good kind of difficult -- the kind that will have you try a particular race "just one more time" over and over until you finally get it. F-Zero GX is a fantastic game and a worthy successor to the F-Zero series. Highly recommended.
GamePro (US) (Aug 25, 2003)
Captain Falcon enlists help from Sega, returns to the racing circuit, and wins back his laurels. If Wipeout was the last eXtreme fUture rAcing game you actually cared about, you’re not alone it was a trendsetting classic that left a million forgettable clones in its wake clones that quickly and efficiently killed any interest you might have had in any future eXtreme future racing game. Prepare to have your interest revived and renewed.

GameSpot (Aug 25, 2003)
If you want a light-speed racer that looks and plays sharply while simultaneously offering some dramatic challenges, F-Zero GX is exactly what you're looking for.
Gamezine (Sep 17, 2003)

Game Revolution (Sep, 2003)
F-Zero GX is truly knuckles-scraping-against-asphalt hard, but not impossible. It’s completely rewarding when you finally overcome the odds. Yet at the same time, it’s a daunting game and is best to take on gradually in small doses.I’ve noticed that if I keep at any one stage for too long, I just won’t get it. But if I try again the next day, it suddenly comes to me.
GameSpy (Aug 28, 2003)
The first thing that struck me about F-Zero GX was how completely gorgeous the game is in terms of visuals and production. AV must have tweaked the final code so much to get the best possible processing grunt from the GameCube. The tracks are really well designed -- offering nail-biting twists, turns, and aerial antics -- and each track has a distinct look based on its location. Some represent simple ovals, while others take you on a rollercoaster ride consisting of tubes, jumps, and inverted stomach-churning loops.
Operation Sports (Sep 11, 2003)
F-Zero GX is by far one of the best looking games for the Gamecube, one of the best playing, and a heck of a lot of fun. There really is not anything to complain about with this game other than the difficulty. If it wasn’t for the difficulty factor, F-Zero GX would be a must buy for anyone who owns a Gamecube, instead it needs to definitely be a game every Gamecube owner at least checks out and rents at the very least, and a must buy for any fan of the F-Zero series.
Edge (Aug 19, 2003)
Those with F-Zero friends will find the multiplayer races enough to sate competitive appetites. While some detail and scenery is removed, especially in the fourplayer variant, it clips along at the same startling speed. No one expected a radical departure from the F-Zero heritage, but the surprise here is that Amusement Vision has bettered the previous Nintendo-developed versions. F-Zero GX represents yet another reason to keep faith in the GameCube.
Player1 (Oct, 2003)
F-Zero GX is a must have for any racing fan, those looking for a challenge, or those who are fans of Sega. Sega’s Amusement Vision house worked on F-Zero. Furthering Nintendo’s connectivity fetish, F-Zero GX is compatible with the arcade machine (if you’re lucky to find one) where you can unlock new tracks. F-Zero GX definitely will not appeal to casual gamers because of the difficulty level, but those who can overcome the high frustration level, F-Zero is the most enjoyable racer this year and only has Mario Kart: Double Dash for competition later this year. Challenge is good right? By the way, if there is no arcade near you, you can still unlock all the AX goodies through GX. Just beat everything on Master difficulty and you'll unlock the AX unlockables, nothing big...
Lawrence (Aug 27, 2003)
If you look beyond the minor unrefined aspects of F-Zero GX and the insane difficulty later on, you end up with a very enjoyable game, especially if you are a hardcore racing fan dedicated to refining your skills to blaze the tracks with your best time. However, I fear that the casual gamer may be intimidated by its difficulty, alienating a big portion of Nintendo's intended audience. But a fine effort overall.
Diehard GameFan (Sep 14, 2003)
Decent game. Better than Average game. Good game. All of those apply pretty well to F-Zero GX. Great game though? Sorry. Look elsewhere. This is a great addition to the Gamecube library and a worthy purchase once it goes down from the 50 bones pricetag. But not until then. Fine an AX cabinet and you can actually play in a mock up of the Blue Falcon. And use a steering wheel. And for much less than the 50$ tag.
70 (Dec 10, 2003)
The Video Game Critic (Feb 19, 2007)
There are a few attack moves (like a sideways spin attack), but these are so weak you'll wonder why Nintendo even bothered. Up to four players can compete via split-screen, but like the single-player mode, it's only mildly amusing. The soundtrack features plenty of up-tempo beats, but nothing particularly memorable. F-Zero GX is a serviceable racer, but it's not a stand out title. It took me a long time to review this game, mainly because I kept hoping it would get better, but it never did.
