SEGA Master SystemMean Machines (Oct, 1992)
Not a scrolling shoot 'em up this time, instead the third in the Fantasy Zone series takes the player to a series of mazes where he must negotiate a variety of hazards and baddies to win the day. The game is a load of fun and, although the graphics are simplistic, there's plenty there to keep anyone happy for days on end.

The original Fantasy Zone was a thoroughly enjoyable shoot-'em-up with a fun element that overcame any deficiencies the game had. Fantasy Zone The Maze draws its base ideas from Pac-Man (no bad thing as it's still a great game), it is highly addictive, although repetitive in the long term and limited in scope. Fantasy Zone The Maze is best as a two-player game, the team element makes it a lot more enjoyable and single-player mode gets difficult on later levels – the monsters move faster than the Opa Opa.

Wer schon immer eine Pac-Man-Version für sein Sega-System haben wollte. ist mit The Maze sicherlich gut bedient. Vor allem der Zwei-Spieler-Modus sorgt für kurzweilige Unterhaltung. Aber auch alleine steuere ich Opa-Opa ganz gerne durch die Labyrinthe. Zum Glück kann man den Startlevel zu Beginn in Vierer-Schritten, anwählen. Spielerische Glanzpunkte setzt dieses Modul bestimmt nicht, aber die knapp 60 Mark ist es durchaus wert (für Pac-Man-Fans sowieso).

In conclusion I have to say I'm generally quite disappointed with Fantasy Zone: The Maze. When I found the sequel to Fantasy Zone, I was so amazed I couldn't wait to find out what came next. When I learned about this I was skeptical at first, and obviously with good reason. One of the biggest mistakes in video game programming is using another idea and adjusting just a little here and there because it's so obvious you tried to simply cash in on the concept and it's a total embarrassment. Sure, shooting at the enemies is kind of neat, but it's not enough to avoid the obvious. Sega shot for the load using the least amount of effort possible.
