PlayStation 4Playstation Universe (Feb 22, 2016)
The world is beautiful and extremely well realized. The dynamic landscapes and unique locations are fantastic. The sounds of the world do a great deal to add to its beauty as well. Far Cry Primal takes survival back to the beginning, where scavenging for resources and crafting materials never made more sense. The brutality of combat immerses the player into what life in the Stone Age could’ve actually been like. The story is simple and without much flourish, and is accompanied by flavorful characters that feel regretfully unexplored. The gameplay of Primal however, is at a series best. The absence of guns isn’t even noticed, and the addition of carnivorous companions is extremely welcome and fun. Oros itself is beautifully crafted and just begs to be explored. There is plenty to do and you won’t regret taking the time to do it. Despite an underwhelming story and a few hiccups, the stunning world makes Far Cry Primal an experience worth going through.

By removing some of the more ostentatious tics from the franchise, Ubisoft has also removed many of the distractions from the beautiful, brutal land it has created for players to explore. This leads to the most immersive world in the Far Cry series, and one that didn't bore for a moment of the hours I spent attempting to tame it. I don't want every Far Cry game from here on to trade bullets for arrows, motorcycles for tigers, but Primal is an invigorating example of how to reimagine a tired franchise while keeping its soul intact.

The concept in Far Cry Primal is excellent, and relatively unique. There are not many games set in this period of history. But once you get past the novelties of primitive weapons and riding around on animals, it still remains a Far Cry game, albeit with more emphasis on hunting, gathering and crafting. There is a huge amount of stuff to do, and completing the somewhat bland story only scratches the surface. Far Cry Primal may not be Far Cry 5, but it is a damn entertaining diversion that offers something a little bit different.

Far Cry Primal may not be the most needed game in the franchise but it is a game that holds up the legacy fairly well. It doesn’t change the formula of Far Cry much, but Primal does have some good humor in it, and some of the side characters are interesting. If you want a big open world to explore in a not-so-typical setting then Primal is up your alley. If you want something a bit more modern then Far Cry 3 or 4 are still good, but Primal is a unique game at the very least.

While other venerable franchises like Call of Duty are afraid to challenge themselves and make only halfhearted gestures toward invention, Primal plots a course through uncharted waters with a battle-tested vessel and actually commits to making its new ideas more than vapid window dressing.

„Far Cry? In der Steinzeit? Super!

Far Cry Primal does enough to shake off the feeling that it's just Far Cry 4 with a different coat on. Exploration is the name of the game and the story kind of takes a back seat. Obviously the game follows the Ubisoft open-world playbook to the page and doesn't skip a beat, but it's actually a refreshing palette cleanser to do away with the futuristic shooters that have bombarded the market in recent years.

Taking the Far Cry formula which has proved very popular in the gaming community and shifting it back in time has created a fantastic game cycle that makes Far Cry Primal an enjoyable journey.

Far Cry Primal is now available on PC, and after taming numerous wild animals, liberating defended enemy outposts, and recruiting several members of the Wenja tribe, it's clear that Primal's PC version not only matches the quality of its console cousins, but slightly outpaces them in several ways, too. 60fps makes the brutal combat smoother. Detailed textures lend a more natural look to the Stone Age environment. Far Cry Primal's setting is its greatest strength, and in its newest form on PC, it's still worth the many hours it takes to explore.

Otherwise, it's business as usual. You brutally kill thousands of animals to craft gear and weapon upgrades; you light bonfires to reveal more of the map; you attack enemy outposts; you have trippy dream sequences; you complete story missions that steadily unlock more stuff. It’s Far Cry, basically, but in the Stone Age. But as much as I love Oros as a setting and all the animal-based tomfoolery, I can’t shake the feeling of déjà vu. If you’ve invested significant time in Far Cry 3 or 4, you’ll find your enjoyment of Primal dampened by its deep-rooted similarity to those games.

PlayStation 4IGN (Feb 22, 2016)
Far Cry Primal succeeds in transporting the Far Cry formula back in time and comes to the table with a quiver of neat ideas and a dangerous and fascinating open world. The visceral and varied combat is fun, the beast-based gameplay is a winner, and the lure of camp-claiming, gear-crafting, beast hunting, and resource gathering remains irresistible. It’s weakened, however, by a disappointing lack of investment in its story, some often forgettable quests, and its vanilla villains, which unfortunately combine to make Primal feel like a step back from the memorable moments of Far Cry 3 and 4.

WindowsGame Watcher (Feb 29, 2016)
Far Cry Primal has far more in common with previous Far Cry games than it seems on the surface, to both its gain and detriment. The caveman setting is novel and the total absence of guns, vehicles and people shouting in your ear every ten minutes is refreshing. Combat is simple but fun, and once the game brings a tameable animal companion in then Primal becomes entertaining enough to last you many hours. Unfortunately stealth gameplay is more problematic as enemies blend into the environment and Hunter Vision is useless, but worse is that the constant need to hunt and gather resources takes up the majority of Primal’s play-time and isn’t fun at all. Primal isn’t a runaway success and the Far Cry formula needs to evolve (preferably involving Trigens or Blood Dragons), but it’s not quite extinct yet.

Far Cry Primal is a perfectly entertaining game, but it’s a hard one to get too excited about, especially when it seems as if only a few twists would’ve turned it into something considerably more interesting. As it is though it suffers from needlessly basic storytelling and a general lack of vision. Although it’s no disaster it does feel like a backwards step for Far Cry, and gives no real hint as to what its evolutionary future could or should be.

Xbox OneTrueAchievements (Mar 06, 2016)
Far Cry Primal takes the franchise back thousands of years to the Stone Age and a tale of a tribe decimated by their enemies. While this tale had promise, the lack of a central villain means that the story also lacks focus and is relegated to the sidelines while the side missions take pride of place. Away from the story, Primal offers hours of other activities that usually involve the game's satisfying melee combat and a beast from the game's rather fun taming mechanic. Players are never left with nothing to do, but it's for how long players will persist before the game starts to feel a bit too repetitive. This doesn't mean that it is a bad game by any means, especially when offering 40-50 hours of gameplay before reaching 100% completion. It just means that Far Cry veterans will have seen this all before but under a different skin.

I had fun with Far Cry Primal, as there aren't many modern games out there currently with this idea of a prehistoric adventure. The story sucked me in, the landscape was both beautiful and treacherous, and sneaking around with a bow in hand doesn't get old for me quickly. That being said, Far Cry Primal had the potential to be the next big thing in the FPS genre, and it was ultimately squandered by decisions to take the easy route to release. If they had put another year of development toward it, maybe then we would've seen what we were hoping it would be.

A decent game, but nothing more. Far Cry Primal tries to differentiate itself from past Far Cry games with mixed success, managing some clever new tricks, but losing a lot of what made Far Cry feel special in the process.

It’s not a bad game by any stretch, it’s just a disappointing one.
