Some people might argue that, compared to the Dark Forces, Duke Nukems, and Quakes of today, this game is a little antiquated. That might be the case in some eyes, but this is the best Doom of the bunch, from top to bottom. It's better than the first, much better than the second, and well worth a look.

Cette nouvelle édition comporte 64 niveaux tirés des WAD Plutonia et TNT, mais il faut bien reconnaître que la surprise n'est plus au rendez-vous. Idéal pour les nostalgiques ou pour les employés de la Sécu.

Final DOOM is the last DOOM. It is an example of a franchise pushed too far. The game contains bits and pieces of new material, but not $50 dollars worth. If you are desperate for more DOOM, I would recommend cruising the web for a bit and downloading someone else's homebrewed WADs for free. Although the levels of Final DOOM are brilliantly done, they are not worth the money in my opinion. Technology and ingenuity have long since surpassed the world of DOOM but it still makes substantial revenue, and id and GT Interactive aren't stupid enough to kill a cash cow while it still gives milk. If you are a DOOM fanatic, you will probably buy this product no matter what. If you have never played DOOM but love the concept, I would recommend Final DOOM over DOOM II. As I've stressed the new levels are great, if a bit hard. Regardless, I for one am thankful that this is indeed the end of the DOOM series.

If it had sported the promised eight-player deathmatch option (as Hexen now does - hooray), Final Doom would be a must-buy, but sporting only hi-res and Internet play as new features, it's only really good for a spurt of nostalgia, or perhaps as a means to teach your grandchildren something of our heritage, or if you haven't upgraded your 486sx25 and are sick of your neighbour crowing about how their Quake workstation 'rocks'. Er, fancy a game of Quake, anyone?

Nevertheless, I enjoyed going through it all again. It may be old, but it is still fun, and if you're in the mood for some nostalgic bloodletting, Final Doom will certainly satisfy your violent urges. Just keep in mind that it's a fun experience, not a new one.

In short, Final Doom is more like a stand-alone expansion to Doom II. If you know exactly what you’re getting into, i.e. more Doom II, then it’s worth playing. It’s Doom 64 that really twists the basics of the original series, making Final Doom – as was a surprise to no one – hardly the epic swan song implied on the tin.

When I look at the sum of Final Doom's parts, I see a few great levels, a bunch of decent ones and a lot that were just there. There's really nothing wrong with either episode, but neither is able to live up to the standards of Doom 2. Both are well-made and have their share of fun levels, but when it comes to truly awesome Doom-ing, there are both better licensed and fan-made games using the engine.

Face it. Doom still has style. Final Doom is too hard to be that enjoyable, but all of those little sadists still worshipping at the altar of id will be more than happy to spend extra time in hell.

Don't waste your money on this. Go download TNT's FREE WADs like Icarus (and a million more that are out there, like the Raven series done by Tim Willits, now a Quake level designer). The supply of levels you can download to play is almost endless, and doing that will save you the trouble of buying this, as well as the trip back to the software store to return it. Even the box is deceiving, because it clearly states "It's DOOM with two new 32-level episodes". To me, that sounds like DOOM should be in there somewhere, and it isn't.

NT-Évolution est orienté recherche de sortie, et The Plutonia Experiment est axé sur la destruction massive de monstres. Rien de bien original.

Like so many sequels that offer little when it comes to new features, this title’s fatal flaw can also be viewed as its crowning glory. Die-hard Doomers may relish the familiarity of blocky, low-res graphics, a spattering of new music and some slightly harder puzzles, not to mention all those familiar nightmarish creatures. Casual players hoping for bigger and badder may be madder than hell that they bought the thing.

In conclusion, Final Doom may be of interest to gamers who don't already own one of the previous five releases of Doom. If you have already spent your hard-earned dollars on one of the previous titles, though, treat this game like a Baron of Hell - stay very far away from it.

If Final Doom offered new monsters, new weapons, or even new challenges, this would be a very different review. Sadly, all three are lacking in this release. The only tangible benefit Final Doom offers over its predecessors is 64 new maps to play. When you consider that there are literally tens of thousands of levels that can be downloaded off the Internet for free, you have to wonder why a mere 64 levels lists for $54.99!

So sorry, Doom - I'm not coming back. And I hope you don't either. There has to be someone somewhere in the world who hasn't played around with you before. Go find them, make them happy...and leave me alone. Or do I have to call the police?

Schade.
