Description official description

The second in the Final Fantasy Legend series increases the amount of detail over the original in gameplay and graphics.

The major changes are in the character classes and party members. Similar to FFL, starting a game of Legends II allows you to choose your main character from Humans, Monsters, Mutants and a new class: Robots. From here, you build your party of 4 from the same character classes. During gameplay special side-characters will join you in battle to help defeat certain enemies.

The other improvement is in strategy. In FFL you gain experience points after each battle, increasing strength, etc. In FFLII, you gain different points and abilities depending on how you defeated the enemy. If you win by using a sword, your strength increases. If you use magic, your mana increases. This adds a more strategic approach to defeating enemies.

A Great RPG for The Little Gameboy. Almost stacks up to it's console versions too

The Good
Well there are many things to like about this game. There are some very nice graphics by gameboy standards and the enemy designs have quite a bit of detail in them. Some in particular are Ashura.

The Storyline is better then the first Final Fantasy Legend.

The Battle System has been revised for the better. You no longer have to buy stuff for humans and they grow just like mutants.

New Classes. Robots are pretty cool.

Lots of towns and worlds to visit. This makes exploring the game a joy to play.

The music is one of the best gameboy soundtracks of all time. Songs like Burning Blood and Aspiration are very good. The game even has it's own Jukebox in most Pubs!

For about a good 70-80% of the game you never really die. You can choose to restart a battle right where you left it. With the exact HP and weapons and magic that you entered in with.

The Final Fight has some great music and the game also has some of the most memorable boss fights for a gameboy game ever.

The Bad
The enemies can be extremely hard if you don't wait it out and level up decently. Mutants tend to die EXTREMELY easy in this game.

Some of the boss fights can be insanely hard for beginners. Especially since some bosses have extremely hard attacks.

It also is hard that while battle system makes it so you don't have to needlessly level up the stats that do go up seem to almost be random at some points. Why do Mutants never get much defense?

Gold seems to be in short supply in this game since you always seem to take a HUGE beatdown by monsters in the later levels.

Robots lose HALF the total uses of any item equiped on them. What gives with that? And to give you another kick in the ass when you unequip it you lose ANOTHER half of the items uses.

Eating Monster Meat tends to make you devolve a lot for some odd reason which is bad since eating monster meat is the only way you become stronger.



The Bottom Line
I'd describe this game as a great little rpg for the gameboy which has only a few other competitors. Final Fantasy Legend 3 and Great Greed come to immediate mind while a few others are in there too.

Since the game was rereleased and is now dirt cheap now is as good as any time to go looking for this gem!

Good storyline, good characters, great RPG

The Good
First of all, the storyline is excellent. Like other Final Fantasy games, the story starts off in a pretty normal place. The enemies are basic, and the villagers are perfectly normal people ( of course, they do come in the forms of gorgons, werewolves and blobs, but still...). But as time goes on, gods start playing into the story, The monsters get stranger, shady characters bring you mysterious messages, and everything goes to chaos. Secondly, the character selection is very good. You have 4 players who can be Humans, Mutants, Robots, or monsters. Monsters can transform into new monsters when they eat the meat of your defeated enemy, Mutants can weild magic, and robots can recharge weapons. Also, as time goes on, you will occasionally have another ally join your party. Next, all the bosses are well drawn and very cool. I should say something about the music. Even though it's only tinny music, it really is quite good. Lastly, the locations are all memorable. The designers did a great job making each "world" look somehow different, or have some strange quirk ( such as Ashura's world, which has a huge sandstorm that impedes your movement).

The Bad
As cool as enemies can be, fighting them is usually pretty dull after about the millionth enemy. Fighting slows down the pace of the story. The animations for when you attack the enemy are uninteresting, even though the enemies are well drawn.

The Bottom Line
Very good. Definitely one of my favorite GB games. 9/10

Localization change

In the game's world of Edo, the player must stop the shady dealings of...banana smugglers. But this only applies to the localized US version - in the Japanese version, the criminals deal with opium instead.
