While wandering the Japanese Twitters, I stumbled across this interesting little tidbit. Apparently Streets of Rage is set in the same universe as ESWAT, and was originally called DSWAT during development. That's why the police car from ESWAT shows up when you use the bomb in SoR. :)

Only the first game is connected, though... the second and third games were by different teams and apparently even they weren't aware.

(And yeah, I know this should be trivia, but I still have no idea how to go about merging trivia entries.)
