KAUFEN!!! "...It's a treasure..."
Portable Review (Nov 04, 2005)
I can’t bring myself to say this game is better than the original, because I’m not too sure. I think the single player experience is better in this one, but the multiplayer of the original was amazing to play with friends. Gunstar Super Heroes brings variety unseen to the world of Gunstar, easily making it one of the best GBA games avaliable. If you’ve played the original, or even if you haven’t, I recommend this game completely.
The brilliant visuals, the charming 2D gameplay, and the Astro Boy presentation are all going to have hardcore fans pulling out their GBA's. It's been a while since we've seen a must-have Game Boy Advance title, but with SEGA's release of Gunstar Super Heroes, it's finally come. From the platform-shooting, to the clever variety, and the excellent boss sequences, Gunstar Super Heroes has "hardcore favorite" written all over it.
Game Shark (Nov 02, 2005)
This game is just a blast to play – it’s too bad there’s no 2-player or cooperative mode via a link, but it’s easily the best Game Boy Advance game I’ve played in quite some time. It’s a very challenging and fun platform game and I highly recommend it.

Quite simply, if you're looking for a well-rounded action game for the GBA, you should not pass this one up.
N-Zone (Oct 18, 2005)
GameZone (Nov 01, 2005)
Once again Gunstar Super Heroes is a great game for the GameBoy Advance. Fans of the original game will not be disappointed with this game. Gamers looking for something to insert into their GBA slot on their Nintendo DS or something to play with their shiny new GameBoy Micro, Gunstar Super Heroes is a great game to try. The great gameplay and the amount of variety of the gameplay are sure to please almost everyone. The graphics will probably have a few of you dumbfounded wondering just how powerful GameBoy Advance really is. But regardless of the tricks or special features used in creating the game, you the gamer, are the ones rewarded with this great game.
IGN (Oct 21, 2005)
Treasure really hit the nail on the head with Gunstar Super Heroes. Though I'm inexperienced with the first game in the series, I'm content to say that this game is a hell of a sequel that really shows the GBA system in a great light during the handheld's Autumn Years. This fantastic action game pushes the GBA as hard as it can, all the while offering some seriously tight and fun gameplay throughout the special effects display.
GameSpy (Oct 26, 2005)
Even with this couple of faults, there's no denying that Gunstar Super Heroes is one of the best things to happen to the GBA in some time. Sure, the DS is stealing the GBA's thunder nowadays, but don't let this game pass you by. You will be doing yourself a grand disservice if you do.
Note to Treasure: no hard feelings for breaking your no-sequel policy. More than ten years have passed since the Genesis went supernova with the original Gunstar heroes, and that same manic action, clever design and chaotic energy crackle with no less appeal on the perfectly capable GBA. About the only negative thing about this game is that it reminds you of a wonderfully classic mode of gamemaking that doesn't exist anymore.
GameSpot (Oct 25, 2005)
Gunstar Super Heroes is a fairly short game with only six levels. If you're good at this kind of game you'll easily burn through it in less than an hour. You can then go back and play through again with a different character, or you can up the difficulty setting and see if you can take the heat. The game is quite punishing, even on normal difficulty, so even veteran players will find a welcome challenge here. When you die, you get kicked all the way out to the opening splash screen, and you have to start over at your last saved checkpoint with whatever amount of health you had when you first passed that point. This makes the game especially difficult at times, since health pickups are usually few and far between. And even though Gunstar Super Heroes is short, it isn't unexpectedly so, because this isn't the kind of game you could play for hours on end.
4Players.de (Nov 23, 2005)
Irre!
Even so, there are still moments that feel cheap, especially in a couple of the boss battles. Collision detection is occasionally wonky, and the controls can be weird to get used to, especially since they switch around depending on the format on. Regardless, this is a fine adventure with a lot of old-school charm.

MAN!AC (Sep 30, 2005)
1UP (Oct 25, 2005)
Unlike many Treasure games which quickly devolve into a never-ending series of boss fights, Gunstar Super Heroes features real levels, plenty of enemies to fight, and tons of eye-candy to enjoy. It's bursting with a creative energy tangible in every level that seeks to outdo itself. The music is classic 16-bit stuff too, and sounds fantastic with some good headphones plugged into the jack. We don't recommend playing it on the Game Boy micro's tiny screen, as the frenetic action is already hard enough on the thumbs, but whether you play this on a handheld, or strap it in to your Game Boy Player and marvel at it on the big screen, Gunstar Super Heroes shows that the two-dimensional art form will never truly die.
Retro Gamer (Dec, 2005)
Gunstar Future Heroes may be a brief experience, but its wonderfully tight controls, terrific level design and stunning visuals are more than enough compensation. Let’s just hope it doesn’t take Treasure another 13 years to come up with a sequel…
Gunstar Super Heroes stands up well as a remake and also as a sequel hybrid to the original. A lot of the little updates are welcome, but the dumbing down of some of the games latter sections and the more focused eight-way firing path may disappoint the older gamers who enjoyed the original for everything it had. New players looking for something a tad different or just a old school shooter will do well to pick up Gunstar Super Heroes. It’s a lovely nostalgic trip to the past, but some of the small things that were removed may leave some veteran players a tad disappointed that they didn’t keep all the old stuff in.
While I didn't enjoy this quite as much as my favorite Treasure game (Astro Boy), Gunstar does fix one of the biggest problems from that title - slowdown. Action is smooth and fast, bosses are mammoth, and the explosive fun serves notice that 2D action is far from dead.
UOL Jogos (Nov 22, 2005)
The Video Game Critic (Jan 13, 2006)
The developer makes heavy use of the GBA's rotation capabilities, with stages that feature spinning planes and rotating a mazes. Unfortunately, these stages look better than they play. Even a new overhead shooter sequence falls flat due to your oversized ship and limited real estate. I could also do without all of the boring dialogue between stages. Does an action game like this really need dialogue? Definitely not! I will give this game kudos for its high score management, which saves high scores and initials per stage. In the final analysis, Gunstar Super Heroes manages to stay true to the original game, but like most sequels, it can't quite match the original.
I liked the game, it was fairly solid, but it was just too short with no real incentive to play it over and over again like say Metal Slug did with its collectable card system, and it was not all that difficult which made it faster to beat, although I will say that it had some pretty nice elements and what not. So, you know, I do not know. I would just suggest renting the game if you can instead of buying it or borrowing it from a friend for a day or two. It will not take you too long to beat. It was good while it lasted
Games TM (Dec 01, 2005)
Gunstar Super Heroes is excellent fun to play. It's frantic, satisfying, very challenging and full of the sorts of explosive set-pieces, generous destruction and screen-filling sprites that made the original such an enormous success. The spirit of Gunstar lives on and it's still one of the best action games ever created.
The Next Level (USA) (Nov 03, 2005)
You're going to compare this respectful retread to Gunstar Heroes -- that's inevitable. But is it better in any way? It looks the same but, for ill or good, it certainly feels different enough. And some sections have even been vastly enhanced: Seven Force, always the series' centerpiece boss morphing from beast to beast with majestic ease, is even more a freakish marvel of physical impossibility. Play it on the GBA Player and on Hard mode: it's one of the finest challenges Treasure will have you live up to.
JeuxActu (Nov 10, 2005)
EL33TONLINE (Sep 17, 2006)
One of the great thing about these Treasure shoot ‘em ups is the variety in stages - there are vertical scrollers, side scrollers, pseudo 3-D forward scrollers, and then the standard side platformers. There’s also a stage that spins around as you move. You get the sense that there is absolutely no filler material in the game, and very little repetition which will make some people complain that the game’s too short, but not me - I’m all for relatively short games with great replay value. The bosses are all very different too and always entertaining. I don’t know that there’s much difference between playing Red or Blue (the aforementioned outfits notwithstanding), but both the Heroes are fun to play as. For those looking for old-school shoot ‘em up action, Gunstar Future Heroes is a great option, and it seems handhelds are the only place you’re going to get your 2-D fix these days.
Eurogamer.net (UK) (Nov 26, 2005)
This doesn't live up to the hugely overrated Astro Boy, from the same development team. And indeed appears to be equally overrated across the board. Apart from on this bit of it, which will undoubtedly be hanged in the Supreme Kangaroo Court of the Internet.
