Wow!
GameSpot (Nov 04, 2003)
Even though Top Gear Rally isn't the be-all and end-all of racing games, it is a huge step in the right direction. The CPU opponents are lifeless, and the number of handling adjustments isn't enough, but these are the most significant complaints toward a game that plays smoothly and looks superb. Any racing fan will be pleased to add Top Gear Rally to his or her collection.
EAGB Advance (Nov 11, 2003)
The CRIS 3D racing engine has taken a step forward in the right direction with highly detailed car models, more track design possibilities and all without any frame rate issues – good stuff indeed and put to good use too in Top Gear Rally. I must say though that the game itself is still more “arcade” then I personally would like, also the lack of car damage and the fact that it's not "true" rally racing leaves me a little dissatisfied. I should balance that, however, and say that I still was entertained while playing this title and despite my complaints, there's no denying that Top Gear Rally really is a good 3D racer on the GBA. It looks good, handles well and has great replay value thanks to the on-line world challenge feature. So, if you want a fast and simple rally racer, than Top Gear Rally is one game I'd recommend.

Fortunately, the single-player game alone is worth the price of admission. Might even be a good excuse to trade in some of the less-fortunate GBA titles you've got collecting dust in your underwear drawer. Top Gear is certainly one of the best racing titles for the system, even if there are no foolish spectators to mow down every time you slide a bit too widely around a curve.
IGN (Oct 24, 2003)
The third incarnation of Tantalus' racing engine is definitely the team's best, and it's great to see that the team injected a lot of what was blatantly missing from its previous two racers. While it's not the best rally racer on the Game Boy Advance (the little seen Colin McRae still has this one beat in gameplay), Top Gear Rally is a very enjoyable racer that might be a little light in customization, but it makes up for it in all the tracks and challenges that you have to race through. There's an excellent amount of racing to be had here.

When the core gameplay is so obviously hamstrung by fundamental design issues, there's no real incentive to get stuck into the meat of the game, and thus the chances of being able to enjoy the two-player link mode disappear into the ether. Throw in the requirement for two game paks for multiplayer and the fanciful £35 price tag and it's a catalogue of errors on Nintendo's part. Avoid.
