All is not well on Game Boy Color.
Survival horror on Game Boy Color? You'd better believe it. Adapted from an eerie PC series, Infograme's Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare features some of the most incredible backgrounds ever seen on GBC.
Controlling a supernatural sleuth named Edward Carnby, your mission is to solve a murder mystery on the appropriately-named Shadow Island. You'll soon discover that this mystery is far from cut and dry. There are dark supernatural forces at work, so you'll have to prepare to rub elbows with some unsavory creatures from unearthly planes.
Staying true to its survival horror roots, Alone in the Dark features fixed backgrounds which do not scroll. Your character walks through a scene, and a new scene loads when you reach the edge. You won't believe your eyes when you see the impressive backgrounds in this game. They look more realistic than anything we've seen on Game Boy Color before. Be sure to search the nooks and crannies of each scene to find extra ammunition and secret items.
The play control is excellent in these fixed scenes, but things take a turn for the worse during action sequences. As you travel through the game, occasionally you'll be ambushed by an unfriendly visitor. When this happens, the camera switches to a three-quarters view of the room and the graphics revert to a more primitive look. You have little time to shoot your attackers, and sluggish play control doesn't make the task any easier.
Despite this shortcoming, the puzzles and overall gameplay experience is not too shabby. You probably won't find yourself shivering in fear, but you'll definitely appreciate the beautiful graphics and interesting plot as the story unfolds. - The original survivor terror franchise is reborn
- Dark atmosphere playing with obscurity and light - use your flashlight as a weapon against creatures from the dark. Carnby uses the Light to discover a soul chilling and dangerous universe
- Based on terror, not horror. Fear comes mainly from what you cannot see. You can hear it, you see its traces or influence, it’s hidden somewhere near you… It’s not gore, it’s frightening! Fear is a cumulative process

Aline Cedrac and Edward Carnby have to find together on Shadow Island four tablets that were allegedly stolen by a renowned archaeologist, Obed Morton.
Aline and Carnby are quickly confronted by strange, menacing creatures and other phenomena. Only an old Indian man, Edenshaw, comes to their rescue by giving them some explanation and guiding them in their quest.
From now on it's a matter of saving their skin and stopping the tribe of shadow creatures from spreading and reaching the Earth's surface.
