Video Games (Dec, 2000)

Pokémon Gold and Silver are going to be the top-selling games on the Game Boy Color system, regardless of what this review says. Pokémon is not a fad, it's here to stay, and this new Game Boy Color series is only going to fuel the blaze of popularity further.

Our 10 year old tester has invested more time in this game than any of his other video games combined -- which can be considered either good or bad -- or a little of both -- depending on your point of view. Left on his own, for example, it definitely cuts into reading time. Certainly, in terms of entertainment value, he has received more than his money's worth. Players are required to read text to a fair degree, and use their brains through strategy and memory skills. Though not particularly difficult to play, the game is detailed, deep, and entirely engrossing.
Gold and Silver are extremely enjoyable and not difficult to learn how to play. The skill comes in being able to fully develop the Pokémon that you catch to defeat all your opponents. I highly recommend this game for the young and old alike.
Gaming Target (Nov 03, 2000)
Pokemon Gold owners will become addicted to the unraveling gameplay that gets better every time you play it with interesting puzzles and a decent story line that’s not overly linear for a Game Boy game. I’d like to see a sequel on the Game Boy Advance done right one day, though. Pokemon Crystal will be tedious like Pokemon Yellow was, so I’d like to see the inevitable Pokemon Advance make use of the GBA's superior audio hardware and of course visual power. Until then, Pokemon Gold, exactly like Silver, is a must-buy for any Pokemon freak out there.

“Pokémon (Gold/Silver) was an experience like no other. It brought the Pokémon franchise to a new level with its massive world to explore, new Gyms, Pokémon and even deeper lore that had players playing for hours on end.”

Electric Playground (Nov 14, 2000)
However, for those gamers willing to accept the fact that they will probably miss out on over half the Pokemon in the game, Pokemon Gold provides entertaining, if not challenging, gameplay that should satisfy Poke-fans until Nintendo comes up with something new for the world of Pokemon.
Legendra (Oct 21, 2007)
