Joypad (Sep, 2000)

All right, stop what you're doing, because I'm about to ruin the image and the style that you're used to. Are you sick of Pole Position knockoffs on the Game Boy Color? Don't you hate it when arcade-style racers smell like feet? You're not alone. Thankfully, Infogrames has the solution to this dilemma: Wacky Races. Based on the Hanna-Barbera cartoon of the same name, Wacky Races is a Mario Kart-style racing game that packs quirky gameplay and playful looks into the Game Boy's 160-pixel screen.

I like to think of Wacky Races as a really nice tech demo, like the various hacker groups put out, showcasing just what some ancient piece of hardware can do if really pushed to the limit. It’s an added bonus that Infogrames happened to strap on an enjoyable game and a nice license. If you like this type of game, definitely check it out. If nothing else, get it to see just what your little system can do, if pushed hard enough.
IGN (Jun 13, 2000)
The engine is bravado, and it is almost a given that the gameplay would pale in comparison. It does, sadly, but not as poorly as I worried it might. It's a solid racer, and the sense of speed makes gameplay fun even when the rest of the design starts to fail. This is a brilliant pick-me-up game, and with lots of hidden cars, there's plenty here to play through. Infogrames has Wacky Races set to be one of their top franchises, and they're assigning some stellar talents to the different versions (just look at the amazing Dreamcast version), so hopefully a sequel is in the plans with more challenges and extremely wild races. This game is a swell rough draft, a blazing play that just falls short of greatness. Still, what a rush!

Before any review of Infogrames' new wacky racer Wacky Races may be properly issued, it must be noted that all wackiness may never be assumed to be anything but subjective. One man's wackiness may be another man's root canal, and to whom is mankind obliged to recognize as the arbiter in such matters? In this modern world where gunplay in schools is an ever more frequent occurrence and our very own president of these here United States of America lies more or less in tune to the beating of his cold, cold heart, is it not possible that wackiness is, in fact, normalcy? Thus, the wackiness of Wacky Races lies not in the inherent quality of the races itself, but in the fact that a racing game on the Game Boy can be quite so entertaining -- which is wacky indeed.
