Mario Party is an interesting game in that it is able to appeal to two very distinct audiences. It really is the perfect drinking game for college dorms (heck, it even has some advanced stat tracking options that show you in graph-form when player #3 started to suck) and at the same time a great game for kids to enjoy with their siblings. Judging from other efforts in this genre, until Hudson fixes the wait time problem, Mario Party 5 is likely as good as mini-game party games get.
The Party’s back but do you really want to RSVP? From the opening overly saccharine musical theme alone, gamers will realize that Mario Party 5 isn’t going to break any taboos or even much new ground but it’s still hard to beat for inoffensive, slow-paced group gaming.
Though annual releases are something usually reserved for sports games, this marks the fifth time in as many years that a game bearing the Mario Party name has been released. The game's N64 roots are showing more and more with each passing installment, both in terms of presentation and gameplay. But thanks to Hudson's uncanny ability to continue producing simple but enjoyable minigames, the formula still works.
You may play Mario Party 5 for only a month or so before you get bored of it. There are plenty of other board game titles around that are doing a lot more to try and stand out. Mario Party 5 is basically the same game as the original with barely any innovations. You should pick up a different party game before this; that is, unless you are a Mario collector. As for a purchase, if you have little kids that don't know any better, you should rent it for them and see how much they like it before you buy it.
Overall, Mario Party 5 is a decent purchase for anyone who hasn’t played the game before. This is also a fantastic kids’ game, as it is extremely easy to pick up and play and has enough imagery that will appeal to the younger set. However, if you’ve already played Mario Party in any of its other incarnations, there’s really nothing new for you here. The mini-games and boards may be different, but the game’s the same, and while it may be worth a rental, full price is way too much to pay for a fifth rehash of a game that, much like a popular song on the radio, was good the first couple of times around, but got old with heavy rotation. Hudson really should consider taking a year off to retool the whole Mario Party concept and make it something worth playing again. Otherwise, one more lazy entry like this might make me give up my Party-going lifestyle for good.
Put simply Mario Party 5 is nowhere near as good as either of the Super Monkey Ball games for single or multiplayer. It's not even in the same league. Though the visuals and sound are crisp there is nothing present that is very exciting. Nintendo's usual suspects are of course present - the novelty of which is wearing thin. Given the frequency of their appearances these days one has to wonder if Nintendo now simply copies and pastes the characters across. This sequel may satiate the thirst of the fan base but it is unlikely to attract any new followers. I'm still waiting for them to introduce black jack and hookers, in fact forget the black jack. Ah maybe they should screw the whole thing. What else is there to say, at least it's better than Rocky V?
Perhaps it's time Nintendo took a cue from sports game publishers and started naming their sequels by year. "Mario Party 2003" doesn't sound quite as desperate as "Mario Party 5," now does it? In any case, the game sure won't help to change Nintendo's image of catering to younger audiences, and it won't win any converts to the series. With that said, the game is still highly enjoyable and far exceeds anything its many competitors ("Shrek Super Party", "Pac-Man Fever", etc.) have been able to accomplish. And on a rare personal note, this is the only game other than "Dance Dance Revolution" and "Animal Crossing" my wife has wanted to play. That has to count for something.
Call it social intercourse for gamers, because that's exactly what the Mario Party formula is all about -- even if that's kind of a kinky definition. Friends gather, tantrums are thrown, threats are tossed, beers are often spilled on the carpet, and everyone thinks they are the big, bad boss at the end, no matter who actually acquired the most sparkling stars. I guess you could call it fun, too, but there are still better multiplayer riffs.
Really though, the game lacks any appeal for the single gamer, and not many people may be interested in a playing a video board game that can go for a couple hours. When people think of board games, they generally don’t think of firing up the video game console
All in all, Mario Party is exactly the sort of game that warrants use of that tired old "mixed bag" cliché. In my mind, said mixed bag, when emptied onto the table, would yield all manner of mostly shiny looking baubles, most of which have some redeeming features but very few of which are worth pursuing for longer than a couple of minutes. That it's all framed by the tirelessly gaudy Nintendo palette, with squeakily familiar tunes and moves at a snail's pace is just not good enough for game number five. By now it should be bright, fresh, accessible and consistently entertaining without ever stumbling drunkenly toward "totally random".
Conversely, Mario’s parties have become haggard and tired. Mario Party 5 is a step backward for the series with its needless vending machine set up and bland mini-games. Fans of the formula will still like it, but newcomers are better off with last year’s bash. Nintendo should ditch or rebuild the game board, reinvigorate the mini-games, and pump some new life into this series. At least we can look forward to the upcoming Wario Ware for the Gamecube. I think its time to ask for a Wario Party.
We all have those undesirable yet mandatory moments in our lives. Actors have to sit in the makeup chair for an hour before a shoot. Plumbers have to plunge clogged toilets. Politicians have to deal with other politicians. As a video game journalist, my cross to bear is having to play Mario Party sequel after Mario Party sequel. At least this time, I get to try to warn you against doing the same thing. Don’t play this game.
