With NBA Live 06, EA Canada has defined the series as even more arcadelike than previous versions. While not a full five-on-five NBA Street, NBA Live 06 features just enough arcade elements to keep the game interesting while still remaining a full blown basketball simulator.

Remember when Michael Jordan was more than just a bald head? When players like Tom Chambers could dunk from the three-point line and Sir Charles threw down gorilla slams from the free throw line. Those "good old days" of basketball videogames introduced individuality to the genre, separating His Airness, The Glide, and Larry Legend from the role players lucky enough to ever sub in a game.

Although there are a few problems with the Freestyle Superstar system, it's still one of the most innovative elements we've ever seen in an NBA game. Being able to dominate players with Shaq or throw cross-court, no-look passes with Tony Parker is a wonderful addition, and it actually makes you feel like you're playing the game with real NBA players, not just a bunch of identical players. It just may be the next best thing to hitting that buzzer-beater in your driveway.
GameSpot (Sep 27, 2005)
While NBA Live 06 does its best to put a new face on its game with the new superstar abilities and tweaks to its franchise mode, the series as a whole still feels stuck in neutral, like LeBron James' Cleveland Cavaliers. And both are still waiting to get to the next level... Thankfully, the core gameplay is solid enough that Live 06 is still recommendable to hardcore hoopsters looking to get a jump start on the upcoming NBA season. Those who appreciate the game's arcadelike feel will probably enjoy the superstar abilities a lot, as they are great fun to watch and they bring the game ever closer to an NBA Street look and feel. But for those who want more of a simulation-style game or for those who are looking for more of an evolution from recent iterations of NBA Live, you're probably not going to find what you're looking for in this year's game.
Game Over Online (Nov 01, 2005)
While NBA Live 06 makes a couple of steps forward with the Freestyle Superstar Controls, it manages to make a couple steps backward at the same time. The fact that these abilities literally take over and unbalance the game, as well as show up the flaws that the game had from last year makes the title an adequate upgrade for the hardcore fan at best, a mild improvement at worst.

EA is definitely focusing on an area of the sport that I feel that all developers should be, but the series has fallen far behind NBA 2K6 in nearly every category.
Game Freaks 365 (Sep, 2005)
In conclusion, NBA Live 2006 isn't a bad basketball game, although there are a lot of things that fail to impress and could have been much better if they were given more time. EA Sports needs to work on slowing down the gameplay and improving dramatically on the graphics engine before the 2007 season rolls around next fall. I'm not sure which I'd recommend this season between Live 06 and Sega's NBA 2K6, as I haven't played 2K6, but pass on buying Live 06; try a rental.
Still, it verges on the farcical when you see a guy try to dunk from the three-point line. It also throws the animation and collision system into arrears as it tries to keep up. Fundamentals, people. Fundamentals.
Game Revolution (Oct, 2005)
NBA Live 06 is fine, decent, entirely competent, but who wants that again? We want bite, and even though this game has Marv Albert, it barely manages to break last year's skin. It retains its spot in the starting five, but this baller's lack of innovation puts its job in jeopardy.
If you've heard "wait until next year" for multiple EA Sports games this year, there's a reason for it. This years run is just terrible, and there's no reason or excuse for it. It's obvious this current run of consoles is no longer the company's focus. NBA Live 06 proves that.
