GameZone (Oct 05, 2003)
This game is a tease. It looks terrific but does not play out as well. The sound track goes from excellent to merely Ok. This is a mindless diversion that has a measure of eye candy, but lack depth.
Game Chronicles (Oct 26, 2003)
I enjoyed the premise and there is an undeniable charm about this game, but there are just too many camera issues that quickly turn into control and combat issues that make the game more frustrating than fun to play. Spirits & Spells is definitely targeted toward the younger crowd who might have the blissful patience to see the game to its conclusion, but everyone else will probably want to avoid this title or at least wait for the price to come down.

IGN (Oct 14, 2003)
Even if you're able to enjoy the simplicity of the title and dig the storyline, you'll be frustrated by constant dying due to artificially inflated difficulty. There's little reason to pick up this title unless you're looking for a Halloween oriented game that teaches kids it's not wise to go seeking candy in the woods.
Armchair Empire, The (Dec 12, 2003)
Even with its Halloween theme, Spirits and Spells is more of a cruel trick than a tasty treat. A disgraceful camera and some old-school-in-a-bad way platform game gameplay elements make this too difficult for its intended audience to play. Even worse, when Spirits and Spells does unmask some of its original gameplay facets, it can be too boring to bother.

Leider ist das alles nicht so spannend, wie es sich anhört, da praktisch keinerlei Neuerungen geboten werden. Man rennt. Man springt. Man kann sich wegen der schienenartig vorgegebenen Wege noch nicht einmal richtig bewegen. Vielmehr wird eigentlich nicht geboten. Uninteressant. Nächstes Spiel.
Game Shark (Oct 20, 2003)
While Spirits and Spells has a great visual style and an appropriate, if repetitive, soundtrack, it is definitely a flawed game. Children most likely won't have the patience to memorize the hazards of each area death after death just to progress to the next part. People looking for a challenge might enjoy the game's mechanics but will likely be turned off by the noticeable and frequent framerate loss. In the end, this is a cute Halloween setting that just doesn't function well as a game.
