Gangstar City is a spin-off of the Gangstar series and specifically Gang$tar: West Coast Hustle. Unlike the main games that are 3D open world titles, this is an isometric strategy game. The game is set in Los Angeles, USA, and the player takes on the role of Garcia. He is the brother of Pedro from Gang$tar: West Coast Hustle and has escaped prison, just like Pedro did in the original game. With the help of Pedro, who gets kidnapped, Garcia needs to save him and help take over the region. It consists of three districts, Hollywood, Santa Monica, South Central, that all need to be controlled eventually.
Garcia can do different types of missions such as robbing people, holding up supermarkets, doing bank heists, fighting or bribing the police etc. The general goal is to collect lots of cash that can be used in different ways. There is a separate section on the map called My Crib where Garcia has a house. Money can be used to construct buildings that provide revenue, such as warehouses, cafés, marts etc. Most of the buildings can be upgraded multiple times. He can also throw house parties to attract thugs that can join his crew, helping out with the missions. Crew members consist of different types, such as thugs, brutes, bouncers, smugglers and VIPS. They can be placed in buildings to help protect real estate. By performing missions experience is gained to level up, improving the character's statistics (HP, attack and defense) and providing new items and weapons. Many items, consumables and weapons can be bought in shops as well.
Missions are performed automatically by tapping the icons or buildings, there is no action element to the game. The game is free-to-play with two currencies: a basic one (cash) and a premium one (diamonds). There is also an energy/stamina system nudging players to play in short bursts and waiting times to finish the construction of buildings.
