This deserves to be Mega Drive game of the year, and it's only January. For the Super NES, the game has more variety than DK2.
Mean Machines (Mar, 1996)
An incredible achievement in 16-bit programming, and a near perfect Megadrive classic.

All in all, there's nothing more that I can do other than pat the people behind this title on the back. It rises above its brief mediocre moments and not only raises the stakes on Genesis visuals forever but also puts some heat on the next gen system manufacturers to really start knocking our socks off. Well done, Disney Interactive; Walt would be proud.

This game may be geared to a younger audience, but it's hard to ignore it's technological achievements. Toy Story, with it's rendered 3-D look, rather amazingly runs on a Genesis. It's the Donkey Kong Country of the Genesis, showing that the machine is still capable of making advancements.

Toy Story has the most unbelievable graphics I've ever seen on the Genesis. I was totally blown away by the Clockwork Knight-like line-scrolling levels, 3-D Doom-style sequences and the gorgeous SGI graphics. Being that this is a non-violent game targeted for kids, I don't understand why Disney chose to make TS so difficult. It's hard! The gameplay is a little basic and the music is only OK, but overall TS is still one of the best Genesis action games this year.

Retro Game Reviews (Dec 20, 2018)
Toy Story is a wildly ambitious title and while it does falter in a few areas it really does deserve huge credit for pushing the humble Mega Drive to its absolute brink. The sheer variety is astonishing and ensures that you'll never get bored, even with repeated play-throughs.

Toy Story is quite a good game, which is surprising for a movie-based game, especially since it did quite well and tried to be a good game, not just make sales based on the license. All in all, if you see Toy Story, pick it up. You’re in for an innovative gaming experience.
Mega Fun (Apr, 1996)
Those of you who enjoyed Toy Story so much that you've seen it more than a couple of times should definitely pick up a copy of Toy Story for the Sega Genesis
I was very impressed with the graphics of Toy Story. They're some of the best that I've seen on the Genesis in a long time. Upon playing for the first time, I thought for sure that this was going to strictly be an easy children's game. But after throwing the controller a few times, I realized that players of all ages can join in on the frustration! Thumbs up for the graphics and thumbs down for the loose control. Toy Story will be a good rental to see if it's your kind of game.

For those who can overcome the plodding pace, Toy Story's fun comes for it's engaging graphics and impressive variety. Veteran gamers won't face many challenges, but younger kids who were captured by the movie's charm will find the going tough. This Story's worth a quick read to see where you fall, but Vectorman's a much better tale.
