Sega really hit the mark with Dynamite Headdy. Congratulations are certainly in order for Treasure, the development team that created the little guy in the first place. Let's hope we see more of Headdy in the future --- on Genesis, 32X and (dare I say it?), Saturn?

Dans un studio où chacun était alors libre de créer le jeu auquel il aimerait lui-même jouer (d'où les projets très différents évoqués plus haut), Dynamite Headdy est le fruit de l'amour du fondateur de Treasure — et ça se voit ! Le soft a été réalisé avec passion, inspiration et savoir-faire au point de reléguer presque à l'arrière-plan le gimmick attendu des têtes amovibles de notre marionnette. Son univers théâtral nous fait d'autant plus facilement tomber sous le charme que celui-ci est constamment nourri par une inventivité débordante en termes de gameplay. Formidable pièce à machines truffée d'ennemis uniques et de boss délirants, Dynamite Headdy est un chef-d'œuvre d'action absurde comme savent si bien en faire les créateurs japonais.

¿Que más cabe decir de esta obra maestra? Dynamite Headdy es una hemorragia constante de originalidad y buen hacer a la que no se le puede poner ninguna pega, y además largo y con muchos secretos. Que grande eres Treasure.

Lejos de ser un plataformas normal y corriente, “Dynamite Headdy” es un trabajo realmente destacable. En primer lugar, sus atributos técnicos resultan asombrosos para su época, con unos gráficos verdaderamente espectaculares. Después está su jugabilidad, entretenida, rápida y muy amena. Así pues, un producto más que recomendable para quienes quieran volver a disfrutar o probar por primera vez un título de mucha calidad.

Treasure managed to make a true under-rated classic here. Dynamite Headdy takes a unique, genuine concept and runs with it. They add depth, tons of variety and extremely entertaining boss fights. Aside from the Sonic the Hedgehog series, this is probably the best platformer on the Genesis. If you still own a Genesis, pick this up today. It’s also available on the Wii Virtual Console.

The replay value is high even without the secret bonus points. There is an extra ending to unlock by beating hidden bonus games, and it's so damn fun to play that you'll keep coming back to it anyway. Borrow, buy, or steal this game as soon as humanly possible.

Dynamite Headdy è un platform game di gran classe che conferma il notevole talento del team di Gunstar Heroes. Titolo ricco di spunti originali e tecnicamente curatissimo, DH ha come fiore all'occhiello una varietà strutturale nettamente superiore alla stragrande maggioranza dei rappresentanti del genere. I 28 livelli che costituiscono la rutilante visionarietà del mondo di RH garantiscono, poi, un lungo e appagante divertimento all'insegna del fuori di testa.

La longevità di DH è assicurata dalle menzionate 28 scene di “action”, “shooting” e “strategy” e dal livello di difficoltà piuttosto impegnativo che richiede al giocatore una notevole versatilità nell’uso delle “heads” del protagonista. Il “Treasure Show” (così è chiamato nel manuale della versione Genesis, in perfetta coerenza con l’ambientazione e la denominazione “scene” per gli stages) è, dunque, uno spettacolo che dura a lungo e la compagnia teatrale assicura a tutti gli spettatori che il divertimento non mancherà e noia, convenzioni e banalità saranno bandite dal teatro per tutta la rappresentazione. Solo chi usa bene la testa riuscirà a vedere il finale a sorpresa dello show!

Sega gets kudos for inventing a new character, not just pulling a retread out of a comic book or a Saturday morning cartoon. Dynamite Headdy's just what his name implies: Dynamite! Heads off...uh, hats off to a new hero!

Dynamite Headdy ist ein farbenfrohes, äußerst innovatives und streckenweise leider auch hektisches Jump & Run-Vergnügen, das von der Qualität her weit über dem genreüblichen Standard liegt. Schade nur, daß die Entwickler den gehobenen Schwierigkeitsgrad nicht durch Continues kompensierten. So kann aus des Spielers Lust schnell Frust werden.

Die insgesamt drei kugelförmigen Helfer-Charaktere spendieren Euch neben Ersatzköpfen auch Fanghaken oder stehen Euch in jedem Level als Hinweisgeber bei. Diese Funktionen müssen sorgfältigst einstudiert werden, denn im Spiel selbst bleibt meistens keine Zeit mehr, über solche Nebensächlichkeiten nachzudenken. Die Levels werden Euch nämlich vor den Augen davonschwirren, so temporeich haben die Programmierer, die einst auch Gunstar Heroes auf die Beine stellten, das Ganze konzipiert. Schade nur, daß sie außer der Continue- keine Paßwort- oder ähnliche Wiederbelebungsfunktionen ins Modul mehr gepackt haben. Dadurch ist man gezwungen, das gesamte Spiel in einer Tour durchzuzocken.

If you are an avid fan of these types of games then there is no reason why you shouldn’t get it. It’s a platform dream and with barely any faults except that it is very hard, but some see that as a good thing. Pick it up if you see it. It’s really worth getting and it must be one of the better platform games on the system period. I had hours of satisfaction and I don’t see why you shouldn’t too.

Spätestens jetzt dürfte jedermann klar sein, daß Treasure zur absoluten Software-Elite auf Segas Flaggschiff gehört. Rein technisch gesehen ist Dynamite Headdy äußerst beeindruckend: Prachtvoll bunte Grafiken, sauberes Scrolling und vor allem sehr gut verständliche Voice Samples; aber auch beim Spieldesign merkt man den Softwarekünstlern an, daß sie ihr Handwerk bei Konami gelernt haben. Jeder Abschnitt birgt Überraschungen und teilweise grandiose Ideen, bspw. schwanken in einer Szene Plattformen hin und her, so daß ein cooler 3D-Effekt entsteht und auch räumliches Spielen möglich ist. Leider lag Treasure aber beim Schwierigkeitsgrad etwas daneben. War das Vorgängermodul Treasureland dank Passwortsystem schnell ad acta gelegt muß man diesmal, obwohl das 16 Megs-Spiel schon sehr schwer geraten ist, ohne ein einziges Continue auskommen.

Another unique title from the folks at Treasure (the company that gave us Gunstar Heroes). The main character, Headdy, has several excellent attacks (using different "heads") and the levels are very colorful with some knockout visual effects (like the rotating platforms and the giant blimp dog boss). This is a top action title for the Genesis.

It's interesting to experiment, and the game is good about providing heads appropriate for the current situation. A secondary character is "Beau", a flying face that points out the weak spots on each boss. He's useful, because this game is seriously boss-heavy. A bonus stage challenges you to knock basketballs into nets, and while it sounds like fun, I actually hated it and wanted to make it stop. Overall, Dynamite Headdy is well programmed, with rich graphics, elaborate sound effects, and pinpoint controls. There's no slowdown, even when the action get crazy (which is often). Genesis fans looking for something substantial will appreciate Dynamite Headdy, but I suspect most will scratch their heads in bewilderment as they reach for the Sonic cartridge.
