Insector X

Genesis version

Better than the arcade version, but that doesn't say much.

The Good
Insector X was a mediocre side scrolling shooter entry. It has nice detailed enemy bug sprites and large, menacing boss characters. The cartoonish look of the arcade game has been replaced by more serious looking sprites and backgrounds, which is an improvement.

Its a great premise for a video game; its just too bad it was a half-aed effort.

The Bad**
I was disappointed with this game. It has a great premise for a shooter in the whole "insectoid machine" theme. Unfortunately, the graphics are so completely washed out, sometimes you think you are playing a master system game.

It simply does not make use of even half of Genesis' limited color pallete. I mean, seriously, most NES games of the 1990 era had more colors on screen than this game did. There is no excuse for it.

The difficulty is also not very even. It goes from challenging to next to impossible in some areas. Some of the boss characters have about 50 hit points and its just tedious.

The power ups are somewhat innovative, but they aren't graphically very impressive.

The Bottom Line
Mediocre. Fun to play if you can get it cheap, but not THAT much fun to play.

I'd recommend a few other Genesis shooters over this one: Thunder Force 3, Thunder Force 4, Gaiares, Forgotten Worlds, are just a few that come to mind.

If you absolutely have to see insects there is a better game than this on the Turbo Graphics 16 called Cybercore.
