Player One (Oct, 1995)

A well-worked puzzle game, with its own elements of character. The major failing is a crippling difficulty level that will alienate its intended young market.

Mean Machines (Nov, 1995)
Quite charming - and quite a challenge.

Mega Fun (Oct, 1995)

Sega Power (Jan, 1996)
A bizarre mix of platform and puzzle that doesn't pull it off. Who is this Marsupilami anyway?

Video Games (Oct, 1995)

When first playing this game, Marsupilami looks like a weak children's game that any youth could play through within an hour; but it isn't. Marsupilami is a great combination of a puzzle/action title that both kids and adults would enjoy. The whole point of the game is to help your elephant buddy get to the end of the level by using a variety or power-ups. The puzzles are sure to hone the younger gamer's solving skills. Although Marsupilami targets the younger generation, the older gamer crowd is sure to be challenged with the puzzles as well (they're not that easy in later levels). Genesis owners looking for a title off the beaten track should take a look at Marsupilami.

Electric Playground (Jul 08, 1996)
Marsupilami is definitely not cool. It's about three years too late, if you ask me. First time game players may find some enjoyment in this title but I suspect that even younger players with a modest amount of play time under their belts will quickly tire of the repetitious and uninteresting gameplay elements in this cart. I commend the implementation of new characters (God knows Sega is a master at bringing in these brand new mascot-type creatures) but when the full creative force that Sega has behind their products can only come up with a Marsupial named Marsupilami (how long do you think it took to name this guy?) and a bad guy hunter named Bring M. Backalive (you see what I mean here), how can they expect to keep us enthralled until the bitter end of this less than adventurous adventure? I say if your Genesis library still looks empty, by all means rent this one, otherwise check out some of the older, cheaper carts you can find in the discount bins of your favorite retail jungle.

This may be Stockholm Syndrome talking, but I think the bottom line on Marsupilami is that it’s… okay. I have no idea who the target audience would have been, since it’s much too difficult for the few American kids who would’ve fondly remembered the cartoon. Marsupilami isn’t a great game, and may not even rise to the level of a “good” one, but it’s a challenging title that shows some evidence of TLC, and beating it afforded me some satisfaction. Much as I wanted to at the beginning, I can’t quite dismiss it.

Marsupilami is packaged as a kid's game, but the stiff controls and quick timer make the puzzle solving tough and may drive younger gamers to tears. The perky, comical animations are pleasant enough, but the plucky, happy circus music grates. In short, keep this cart confined at your nearest retailer.
