FLUX (Oct, 1995)
There are strong improvements here, but it's up to you whether to spend $70 for them. This is the best hockey video game ever, but there's still room for improvement and, as EA knows, 1997's just another year away (and the 32-bit versions can't be far behind). Just how many years in a row are we going to get new editions? And better yet, why can't they perfect this thing?

Regardless of which version you choose, NHL' 96 is the most solid, complete hockey game that I have played until probably NHL '04 for the Playstation 2. Therefore, I name it to the inaugural class of the Sega Genesis Sports Hall of Fame. Now for that, you'll just have to take my word. Through all of the multitudes of sports games that you will most likely come across, I will guarantee you that this is the best one you will find when you buy Genesis games, and it is completely worth your investment. This is the first ten I have ever given a review because it's that good. So, lace it up and get ready to lose to me and my mighty Detroit Red Wings, because NHL '96 is the best hockey game ever made for the Genesis.
Game Players (Oct, 1995)
The only thing wrong with this game is that every sport isn't captured this great. Buy this game now or I'll be forced to send a squid to your door.
Mega Fun (Sep, 1993)
Summa summarum ein spielerischer Hochgenuß on the Rocks!

The Video Game Critic (Jun 29, 2003)
After an off year, EA's famous hockey franchise made a comeback of sorts in 1996. Once again, NHL's engine has been completely overhauled, and the gameplay is faster, smoother, and more realistic than ever. The player graphics are better detailed, and improved physics makes for more realistic puck bounces. The rink is a deeper shade of blue, and the crowd looks better, but for some reason the referee looks like a midget in tights (not that there's anything wrong with that). One aspect where NHL '96 falters is the sound department. EA tried to incorporate new digitized crowd noise, but it's full of static and just sounds awful. There aren't many new features except for the new "elaborate on-ice Stanley Cup ceremony", which people who play through a whole season should appreciate. Overall, NHL '96 represents a return to form for the franchise. This is one slick hockey game.
With the new difficulty settings this game should actually force you to occasionally lose. NHL 96 is one of the most complete hockey videogame for the Sega Genesis and will provide many, many hours of great gaming.
GamePro (US) (Oct, 1995)
NHL '96 stands tall as the top hockey game and it beats the pads off it's SNES counterparts. If you own the '95 version, though, rent before you buy to make sure the improvements in NHL '96 are worth the green.
Mega Force (Oct, 1995)
EA Sports is going to get some as they went under the hood and rebuilt the NHL Hockey engine. The players are 20 percent smaller and that translates into more wide-open game play. The defenses are tougher and goals are harder to come by, so you'll have to find new ways to score. The AI of this game sees players cover for others that get caught out of position, and fighting is back this year.
Sega Power (Dec, 1995)
As much as I like NHL series, perhaps it's time for EA to prepare a burial shroud and do something else.
