Shinobi deve resgatar sua namorada, em poder de forças malignas. E, para isso, deverá usar de toda a inteligência e agilidade dos guerreiros ninja.

Revenge of Shinobi is an impressive video game. The graphics and music are outstanding. When enemies die, a fireball rises from that spot; the animation for this effect is very realistic. And the music is terrific. A single drum beat can be heard upon your character's death, and the soundtrack for each scene is awesome. Video gamers won't be disappointed with money spent for this game. The game is a great way to show off your Genesis video game system and to show how it holds its own against computer games running on the Atari ST or Amiga. A great deal of development and testing time must have been spent on this game to offer such high play value. Sega deserves a round of applause.

The graphics are excellent: brilliantly detailed, very colourful and masterfully animated. The speed is incredible - no matter what is on the screen (and believe me, there are some big end-of-level guardians) the pace remains the same. Sound is also spectacular, with a different sampled stereo track for each level and 101 different sound effects. Prepare your senses for audio/visual overload...

Avec neuf vies en mode easy, trois "Continue" et des shurikens infinis, rien ne peut empêcher Shinobi d'aller jusqu'au bout. Même si cela ne se fait pas sans peine. La diversité des situations, la qualité exceptionnelle des graphismes et de l'animation, le tiendront en haleine tout au long de son périple. Si l'on rajoute à cela, les musiques d'enfer qui lui remontent le moral dans les moments difficiles, rien, non vraiment rien, ne devrait l'empêcher de régner en maître sur la ville... et sur les autres jeux de la Megadrive.

At least initially, the critics thought Sega just had well known titles without substance for its fledgeling console. However, The Revenge of Shinobi helped define the Genesis as the leading 16-bit console of choice. It's still fun and challenging to this day, assuming you like ninja action.
Mean Machines (Oct, 1990)
I’d be more than impressed if I’d played this game in the arcades. But on the Megadrive? Wow! It’s an absolute treat for the ears and eyes. Each level is a graphical masterpiece, from the depths of Chinatown to the top of the tallest skyscrapers, and the animated opening sequence will leave you gasping with admiration. The sprites are simply superb – the animation on all of the enemies and Shinobi himself just has to be seen to be appreciated. On top of that are the incredible rock soundtracks and stunning sound effects! All that would be useless without decent gameplay, but Revenge of Shinobi doesn’t dissapoint here. It’s challenging and amazingly addictive and keeps you glued to the machine for hours at a time – I just didn’t want to stop playing. Revenge of Shinobi really shows off the abilities of the Megadrive – if there’s one game to buy for it, it’s this!

The game itself provides more than enough challenging opponents and scenarios to keep even the most demanding gamer busy. Even on the easy level it is still very difficult. It is often more a case of not being able to negotiate a particular physical hazard than facing a large number of insumountable oriental enemies. This means that it has an extra dimension compared to the average ninja beat-'em-up, making is distressingly involving and hair-wrenchingly addictive.

Für das Mega Drive sind Sega anscheinend ihre eigenen Spielautomaten-Hits zu schäbig. Nach "Space Harrier II" und "Super Thunder Blade" ist mit "Super Shinobi" schon die dritte Umsetzung erschienen, die mit zusätzlichen Features und mehr Levels gegenüber dem Original aufgepeppt wurde.
Au chapitre des défauts, on retiendra surtout quelques passages vraiment super retors, qui contrastent avec une difficulté généralement bien réglée, des combats contre des boss inégaux en intérêt, et un double saut donc le timing n’est pas forcément facile à appréhender. Cela n’empêche pas Revenge of Shinobi d’être un grand jeu, dans la lignée de son aîné dont il reprend avec brio le concept tout en l’enrichissant sans le trahir.

Revenge of Shinobi è un titolo di altissimo livello che assicura un lungo ed appagante divertimento. Il gameplay, infatti, fonde efficacemente lo stile arcade con il più pacato ed “esteso” ritmo da console in una sintesi vincente che, inoltre, si avvale di una difficoltà ben calibrata e di un’ampia rosa di opzioni per adattare il livello di sfida ad ogni esigenza.

The Revenge of Shinobi is one of the finest purchases you can make for the Genesis. The gameplay is very frantic and keeps you on your toes, it controls like a dream, the music is incredible, and the graphics give it a charm that has yet to be matched.

It's a long time since I've seen this sort of attention to detail in a game. The sprite have to be seen to be believed, especially some of the level guardians. Sound is just as impressive, with a dozen or so soundtracks that must push the Mega Drive's sound chip to the limit. And don't say, 'Oh yeah, this is just another oriental beat-'em-up', I assure you The Super Shinobi is worthy every penny of the asking price.

C'est un jeu 16 bits qui n'arrive pas encore à se trouver, qui ne sait pas encore ce qui définit un jeu 16 bits. Qu'on se rassure, ce sera pour plus tard, avec les autres tentatives que seront Shadow Dancer et surtout Shinobi III.
A truly phenomenal game! Superb graphics, a wide variety of different screens, and extremely challenging game play all add up to one of the best Genesis games yet! Has plenty of depth and makes good use of features like the Shinobi magic.
Mega Fun (Sep, 1993)
Im Vergleich zu damals hat Super Shinobi nahezu nichts von seiner Faszination eingebüßt und ist heute noch genauso empfehlenswert wie anno dazumal. Für mich immer noch eins der besten Mega Drive-Spiele überhaupt.

Concluyendo, The Revenge of Shinobi es un excelente capítulo de la saga, posiblemente el mejor en Megadrive, y sin duda el más largo (y difícil, con fases como la última, un desesperante laberinto). Aunque a día de hoy nos pueda parecer desfasado, es sin duda uno de los juegos de culto de la Megadrive.

Die beeindruckende Grafik des Games wird von Bild zu Bild schöner, das multidirektionale Scrolling in zwei Ebenen hat bereits von Beginn an Weichspülerqualität. Zugegeben, die Sprites sind nicht immer grandios animiert, dafür aber groß und äußerst farbenprächtig gezeichnet. Nicht minder gelungen ist die Soundkulisse mit viel toller Musik und ganz netten Effekten, genau wie die treffsichere Steuerung, die im Optionsmenü sogar nach eigenem Gusto variiert werden kann. Fazit: The Revenge of Shinobi ist auch heute noch ein Muß für jeden Bildschirm-Ninja!

So take the word of the Genesis players who were there blazing the trail 20 years ago and first got their hands on this one -- Revenge of Shinobi is definitely worth your while, and 800 of your Wii Points. Just don't be too disappointed when you come across Spider-Man in his freshly recolored, powder pink Spandex. It's just another step in the long journey of afterthought alterations for one of SEGA's most loved action games.

Do real ninjas have to put up with that kind of crap? The game has an excellent old-school soundtrack, and the stage theme reminds me of Streets of Rage - it's that good. The sound effects of crackling flamethrowers and clanking swords are terrific, although the voice samples are generally awful (typical for the Genesis). Revenge of Shinobi had the makings of a truly great game, but it's entirely too hard. I had to do some serious research just to figure out how to defeat the first boss, and I never would have been able to properly review this game without my Game Genie. The difficulty is brutal, and the ending is weak. I can only recommend Revenge of Shinobi to gamers to insist their games be hard as nails. The game has a lot to offer, but casual players probably won't survive long enough to see much of it.

That's about the only way I could pump myself up enough to finish each stage — the anticipation of being able to incinerate the next level's weenie private, weenie sergeant, or weenie lieutenant, in Nasty Ninja style. Toss out the Assassin-Hero gimmickry and the game feels to be little more than a slow-arse stroll through drab scenery, tossing darts at drab grey ninjas and drab green soldiers. Sure, we can whittle any game, no matter how fantastic or how mind-numbingly dull, down to such bare-boned concepts... but it's hard to candy-coat the misguided nature of Revenge of Shinobi.
