EA has produced a sports game more playable than FIFA! Unbelievable as this may seem, it isn't until you're fending off tackles and pulling off incredible passing runs that you realise just how instinctive and realistic this is. Graphically the game is top-notch with more sprites on screen than thought possible, whilst the sound is enhanced by realistic grunts and groans as the players pile into each other. One of the best sports games on Mega Drive.
Mean Machines (Dec, 1994)
A superb simulation which captures the rough'n'tumble nature of the real thing perfectly. Another bonzer EA conversion.
Game Players (Apr, 1995)
On the whole, though, Ruby's great animations, roaring crowds and action packed gameplay make it very entertaining, even for football-happy Americans who've never seen a rugby game. Give it a try.
Considered one of the best European sports and with EA being one of the best sports crews, they bring you this exciting sport home. All of aspects of this game are right here with excellent animations of players. It may take a bit of time to get used to the controls, as it tends to get busy on the field with all of these players.
Play Time (Jan, 1995)
It takes some careful studying of the manual to grasp the finer points of the game and be successful in the League and World Cup modes, but if you're ready to try something new, you're gonna find that Rugby World Cup '95 is a total blast. South Africa, here we come!
GamePro (US) (Feb, 1995)
While it may be too frustrating for the mainstream gamer, Rugby '95's sure to meet the expectations of any true rugger. All that's missing are those famous postgame pub songs!

A game will take five, ten minutes to possibly over an hour depending on time per half. Unless you really want your rugby fix or are a huge fan of the sport, Rugby World Cup ’95 is one to skip, though I wouldn’t avoid it at all costs. Good luck finding the game if it’s at any used game store. It’s not horrible by any means, but not great either. If the difficulty was a little more refined, maybe it would have been more enjoyable. Even playing with friends might be difficult or not fun. Simply put, there are other EA Sports titles worth your time more.
Just Games Retro (Jan 13, 2016)
If it seems like I don’t have a whole lot to say about Rugby World Cup ’95, well, it’s because I kinda don’t. It’s not great by any means, but nor is it chock-full of game-breaking bugs or truly terrible gameplay for me to rip it apart for. There weren’t a ton of rugby games out there (and still aren’t, for that matter), so this one probably got some extra mileage for the novelty factor, but aside from that, its biggest problem is that it’s just not very much fun, and indeed, slogging through an entire World Cup campaign felt more like a chore than an enjoyable experience, as games tend to either be complete squashes or turgid affairs where nobody scores for long periods of time and crossing the 22-meter line is an accomplishment. It might be worth a look if you’re a diehard rugby fan who just can’t get enough or you REALLY like the mid-’90s FIFA engine just that much, otherwise, you might just be better off looking for a decent game on a different console.
