I wish Giga Wing didn't have unlimited continues, because that takes the challenge out of finishing the game. Remember, your main goal is to achieve the high score - and these things are high. There are so many digits that Capcom highlighted the billions just to make them easier to read! That's pretty silly, but Giga Wing is a remarkable title that really shows what the Dreamcast is capable of. I may have taken this for granted in 2001, but I certainly don't anymore.

Let's get one thing straight... If you don't like old-school shooters then you'll probably think GigaWing is a waste. However, if you're like me, then you crave the fun and memories of yesterday's games. This is the kind of game nobody could bring home in tact until the Saturn and Dreamcast came along. GigaWing does just about everything right -- I wish it was longer though...

That’s the game’s one true flaw. With only four selectable characters and a mission that ends almost as soon as it began, the game sometimes feels skeletal in its girth. What’s there is fun, but then it’s over and you’re wondering why you didn’t hold out for a disc packed with more hours of fresh content. A two-player mode, while certainly welcome, is no substitute for additional stages. Even so, not every game can be epic in its scope. Considering the minimal amount of cash it’ll take to make Giga Wing yours, the game is an obvious purchase. Just don’t come crying to me when you find yourself thirsty for more.

It's not nearly the greatest shooter, but it's some amount of fun for one or two players. I'm not sure if I'd pay full price for Giga Wing (49.99? You guys HAVE to be joking), but if you can find it for discount, and if you're a shooting fanatic, go for it. Maybe if enough people buy it we'll get a port of Silvergun.

It all adds up to a game that's ultimately too hyper to hold any great appeal. Not even the most focused mind would be able to track all the onscreen action. Not even the most talented game player will be able to navigate the plane to escape the hundreds of death-dealing projectiles shot by one of the game's many screen-choking enemies (some take up more than half the gameplay screen with their bulk) and frustration will quickly set in. Players will need to use "Force Bombs" not only to destroy powerful foes, but also to briefly rid the screen of enemy fire. Though the game offers eight different difficulty settings, it's all just eight shades of excessive.

Why did this game come to the US? If Gigawing were priced to move, the violent lack of quality and longevity could be forgiven to an extent, but it's not. Gigawing was designed with the hardest-core shooter fans in mind, but it's this same audience that's likely to be the most disappointed.
