Following the movie series (and released in conjunction with The Godfather III)- work your way up the Corleone family ladder over the span of 50 years, and attempt to destroy the rival families.

A walk-n-shoot game; each of the five levels represents a decade from the 1940s to the 1980s. Shooting rivals increases your standing, while shooting innocent people lowers it.

Each level also provides the opportunity for shootouts, a reflex-testing mini-game that requires you to kill people who draw their guns as quickly as possible, while not killing those that don't draw their guns.

Some boxes in the UK, had two free promotional material: "A Pictographic history of The Godfather Movies Part I, II and II" contains a plot summary, trivia, colour photographs and 'The Corleone Family Tree' on the back cover. And advertisement of CIC Video's boxset "Godfather the Epic 1901-1959" (Parts 1&2) with added footage and announcement of "The Godfather Part III" release in 1992, all on video cassette [VHS].

German index

On March 31, 1993, The Godfather: The Action Game was put on the infamous German index by the BPjS. For more information about what this means and to see a list of games sharing the same fate, take a look here: BPjS/BPjM indexed games.

The game came out a year after the final movie was released in 1990. Certain scenes are based and/or inspired from all three "the Godfather" movies, notable examples are: 1940s era New York City setting of the 1st movie (1945 onwards), location of Havana, Cuba comes from 2nd movie and 3rd movie, the helicopter attack on the conservatory.
