With The Ballad of Gay Tony, Rockstar have delivered another killer episode of DLC. Players that moaned that Rockstar had taken the fun out of the game with too much realism will be happy to see the return of the over-the-top antics, whereas players who appreciated and loved the realism and the story, still have more than enough substance to keep them immersed. The overlapping of the three stories comes into its element with The Ballad of Gay Tony, with Luis, Johnny and Niko meeting on more than one occasion. Only charging £13/$20 for a piece of content that can last in excess of 10 hours is putting the rest of the industry’s shoddy-2-hour-burst-DLC-for-half-the-price, to shame. In a word, or two... this DLC is “must buy!” A ton of content, great writing, plus, it’s another excuse to step back into the liveliest digital city ever created.

While it’s sad to think that this will be the last new GTA content for awhile, it’s a good time to reflect on what a wild ride the Liberty City universe has been, especially this final explosive chapter.

The Ballad of Gay Tony wouldn't be difficult to recommend as a full retail product, so at 1,600 Microsoft points this downloadable content really is a steal. There's a lot of content here, even if you just play through the superb story without ever checking out any of the optional activities. You might be disappointed that this episode doesn't bring much in the way of new multiplayer content to the table, and it's true that one or two of the optional activities aren't as much fun as they might have been, but the incredible value offered by The Ballad of Gay Tony is undeniable.

The Ballad of Gay Tony is by far the best GTA 4 experience yet, and as a single package with The Lost and Damned sitting alongside it, it's a no-brainer for extended gameplay sessions. But putting the Biker story, and Niko's own tale, TBoGT simply has better missions, a more compelling story, loveable characters (some you'll love to hate, actually) and an even more enjoyable game-world to play with. This is the best instalment, and can completely exist, and be played, without having ever played the other two, though I highly recommend eating up the brilliantly crafted dovetail that sees all three of these games crossing over with each other. Otherwise, strap on your parachute and get ready for an awesome ride with The Ballad of Gay Tony - the perfect outro to a stellar story.

The Ballad of Gay Tony is the perfect way to close out the GTA IV saga. Finally, we know what happened to the diamonds stolen in the main story a year-and-a-half ago. Though Luis Lopez doesn't have much of a story at all (this is the ballad of his boss, after all), the supporting cast is phenomenal. There are a lot of hilarious moments and ludicrous missions that will please GTA fans. Sure, a few of the missions fall flat compared to the wild nature of others, but all-in-all this is a fine package and worth 20 bucks.

You’ll also see a few familiar faces along the way. Both Niko and Lost and Damned Johnny Klebitz make multiple cameos, the most important of which coming with the failed museum heist. The diamonds changes hands a bunch of times, but Gay Tony provides the definitive answer for how it all turns out. That also seems to signal that Rockstar might be finished with Liberty City, which, despite dropped well over a hundred hours into the entire package, feels like saying goodbye too soon. It seems like there is a vast amount of architecture yet to explore, but if Gay Tony really is the send off, it goes out with a bang.

This has been one hell of a ride. I'm going to miss seeing something new in Liberty City, as I've probably been to every available nook and cranny. I suppose I could still go hunting for those damn pigeons, but with so many other games coming out in the coming months, I don't know where I'll find the time... at least until Rockstar gives me a ticket to their next world of crime, violence, and vice.

The Ballad of Gay Tony provides for a satisfying experience at an extremely reasonable price. The open world is still subject to many of technical issues that plagued the original game (bouts of extreme pop-in, ridiculous city drivers, and slow down with a lot of on-screen action), but between another entertaining story, some new gameplay options, and the same believable atmosphere, there's more than enough to make you want more when it's all over.

It's easy to see some fans being frustrated at this expansion's direction. The tone of the story is, after all, quite a departure from the franchise's previous two outings. However, the amusing dialogue, fun gameplay, and delightfully absurd missions make this a must-buy for everyone, whether by download (in which case it requires a copy of GTA IV to run) or on disc with The Lost and Damned. The only question remaining is how Grand Theft Auto V and its expansions can top what Rockstar has given us these past couple of years.

If the rags-to-riches story of Niko Bellic didn't blow your skirt up while considering the purchase of Grand Theft Auto IV, then the double-barreled appeal of Episodes from Liberty City - and the fact that the original GTA IV game disc is not required to enjoy either expansion - may yet secure your investment. With The Lost and Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony pushing around 25 hours of combined gameplay across an open-world playground of proven quality, laying out the cash for Rockstar's staggeringly good DLC bundle really is something of a no-brainer.

To put it simply, if you loved GTA4, you're going to love The Ballad of Gay Tony. The writing is top-notch, the characters are awesome, and the extra activities will keep you busy far beyond the 10+ hours it takes to beat the story. Most impressive (at least to me) is the way the game portrays the relationship between the two male leads. They genuinely care about each other, even while bickering and arguing like an old married couple. If that isn't the true definition of friendship, I don't know what is.

Ultimately, it’s remarkable that Rockstar have managed to keep this series fresh to the bitter end. Despite sticking so adamantly to the aging GTA IV controls, both episodes in Episodes From Liberty City succeed thanks to skilful writing and a hugely charismatic virtual world. In this reviewer’s opinion, The Ballad Of Gay Tony is the most enjoyable by simply upping the ante a notch, reminding us that even in a city 'where the money is making the plan', you can still have a little fun.

Besides this, The Ballad of Gay Tony is a great way to say goodbye to Liberty City. The story isn’t as strong as the other chapters in the series but some of the new characters are fantastic and the writing is still as good as ever. What sets it apart is the return to the craziness of old, with a large emphasis on extreme helicopter stunts and basejumping from immense heights. It’s an eight hour thrill ride with only a few poor missions and GTAIV’s dated gameplay holding it back. For the relatively cheap price it should be a must buy for any GTA fans, particularly those with a fondness for either Vice City or San Andreas.

If you like Helicopters and Boats then add an extra point on to the score. Otherwise, Rockstar have seemingly created this new expansion to cater towards pleasing the people that thought GTA4 lacked ‘fun missions’. If you are one of those people, then I hope you are happy with this, because I am not.
