Greg Hastings’ Tournament Paintball Max’d isn’t a flawless experience, but it is certainly a unique one. Gamers looking for something competitive, yet different, should definitely give Max’d a look.

Activision’s paintball series makes another appearance on Xbox. The last game was pretty successful, prompting Activision to commission developer WXP for a sequel. The game showed many that paintball is a somewhat serious sport. The sequel is a much more thorough game than its predecessor but offers more bang for the buck.

I’ll have to admit, I thumbed my nose at the first Greg Hastings’ title when it was released last year, but that was before I played it. Having played paintball before, but ever in “tourney” format, I was expecting something that erred more on the side of backwoods antics with markers and a poor excuse for a CTF match. Boy, was I wrong.

Paintball has become a popular sport and is still growing. At first it was for the weekend warrior types to go out and have a good time. Then it started to grow with leagues and tournaments. If you ever watched a match, it looks simple but it does require teamwork and skill. Perhaps that’s why it has grown so much and now has gone from farmers’ fields to make-shift indoor arenas.

Anyone looking for the best paintball experience on the Xbox should look no further than this game. Though it's definitely a niche genre, Greg Hastings' Tournament Paintball Max'd effectively captures the mix of action and properly using cover in arena paintball. Fans of shooters in general may not really be interested in this game since there aren't any bullets. Still, for anyone going into this game with the expectation that they'll only be playing paintball it's a solid experience with plenty of play options.

Overall, this game is fun for about two hours, gets boring and becomes fun again if you wait an hour. This process is repeated for every time that you play, even with the co-op career mode. Now the Xbox Live feature is promising; creating a team, recruit up to six team members and go at on Live. On-line statistics keep track of your online progress, and the custom maps that you create can be uploaded and played on Live. You can also create and edit competitions and match settings. This makes the Live feature a bit more of the featured mode, along with the field creator, in GHTP2. Had this game been $19.99, it would have been worth the retail price, but for anyone who has any skepticism about this title, renting it would be the wiser choice before buying it.

You might expect a paintball game to play like a gimmicky, bloodless version of your average first-person shooter. However, if you're familiar with the sport of paintball, you already know that there's much more to it than that. In fact, Greg Hastings' Tournament Paintball and its followup, Greg Hastings' Tournament Paintball Max'd, go to great lengths to present paintball as legitimate sport, with its own rules, culture, products, and players, rather than a dumbed-down imitation of a first-person shooter. That nonword in the title of Greg Hastings' Max'd sounds silly, but it brings with it some much-appreciated new features like team control, voice commands, a map editor, and more course layouts and tournaments than the previous installment in the series.

In the end I have to say that I was still very impressed with Greg Hastings Tournament Paintball Max'd. It may not have been the most comprehensive game of the year, but it got the job done. If you like the sport, and want to take it online, then do yourself a favor and check this game out. It is really worth a try, as it has a very nice easy gameplay system that I feel many will find extremely enjoyable.

Greg Hastings Tournament Pinball MAX’d is pretty much a game that you will either like, or wonder why it was made in the first place. It works well as a team based action game, with quick gameplay online and the single player experience is probably the most in depth you will find from a game of this style, with its only competitor being games such as Counter-Strike from Microsoft. It’s a fun game, and Activision have released it at the right time, because up against heavyweight titles, this just doesn’t stack up.
