PS VitaGamers' Temple, The (2013)
I'm not sure what else I can say - Guacemelee came out of nowhere and earned a top spot among all the Vita games I've played, and I've played most of them. It plays like a dream, it's nice to look at, it can be funny as all get out and it just feels like the real deal, a complete experience just shy of masterpiece status. And the cross buy feature means you don't need a Vita (or a PS3) to get your hands on this game. Like I said in my first paragraph, buy it yesterday.

PS VitaGaming Age (Apr 12, 2013)
With visuals that could easily be mixed in with a dozen of modern-day cartoons, Drinkbox's magnanimous initiative to maintain a level of artistic fidelity in a 2D action-platformer has been whittled down to core values of new, shiny, and fun. Best of all, it works wonderfully and leaves us wanting simply more to do. While that's the note that anyone would like to end on, as an audience member it's a hard pill to swallow. Hopefully other studios take note from Drinkbox's Guacamelee!, a game that's tastefully ripped the highlights of gaming lore and design, and managed to weave it seamlessly into a stylized Mexican fantasy tale.

PS VitaGame Critics (Apr 09, 2013)
In the big scheme of things, those two criticisms are pretty small potatoes, and for a hard-to-please critic like myself, this should be taken as a statement of Guacamelee!'s superior quality. Everything about it is finely-tuned and dripping with polish—the bright, stylized visuals, the rock-solid handling, the smart decisions in its core design, use of its Mexican themes, and so on. Every aspect of the experience screams quality, and every PlayStation Network (PSN) or Vita player would do well to check it out.

Guacamelee! is not entering a particularly overcrowded pool of similar games on the PSN but lack of competition hasn’t stifled creativity. It’s Drinkbox’s best game so far (and I was a big fan of Mutant Blobs Attack on Vita) and it’s the best combo-brawler on PSN. It’s also one of the best platform puzzlers and one of the best Metroid-vania style games. Not content with that list of “bests”, Guacamelee! is also one of the best games for your Vita.

PS VitaGame Revolution (Apr 09, 2013)
The combat is addicting, the animations are beautiful, and the narrative is entertaining. What more could you want? As another cross-buy from the PlayStation Network, you'll get both Vita and PS3 versions of the game making this kind of a no-brainer. If you have the chance, wrestle this one to the ground today.

PS VitaGamestyle (Apr 10, 2013)
Guacamelee isn’t the second coming of anything like that. It takes a tried and tested formula and just delivers. It gets the basics right and makes sure fun is at the forefront of what it does. Great platforming, wonderful adventure, silky smooth combat and the perfect balance of challenge and enjoyment. To truly joyful experience from start to finish.

Guacamelee! is genuinely funny, massively enjoyable, and filled to bursting with good ideas. It's your next essential Vita game

PS VitaThunderbolt Games (Apr 17, 2013)
The story clocks in a little on the short side, definitely making a case for quality over quantity. The multitude of collectibles, easter eggs, and an unlockable “hard” difficulty will keep completionists coming back for more, but those who play and forget may have a few quibbles with the length. With that being said, Guacamelee takes a tried and tested formula, and puts its own sheen onto it, in the process crafting one of the best titles, downloadable or otherwise, available for Playstation Vita.

Guacamelee!

PS VitaThe Digital Fix (May 10, 2013)
The PlayStation Vita for too long has relied on spin-offs and ports from its older brother but with focus continuously shifting towards directly downloading from the PlayStation Network, small developers are now getting the chance to flex their creative muscles. Considering that the game is basically one big homage to the Metroid-Vania sub-genre, DrinkBox Studios have reinvented a classic style of gameplay and given it a much needed, high definition polish. If anything, this helps Guacamelee stands out so well on its own and deservedly should be considered one of the world heavyweight champions of the PlayStation Vita games catalogue.

PS VitaDigital Chumps (Apr 09, 2013)
If Super Metroid is fine dining on exquisite steak then Guacamelee is a night at the wild Mexican place down the street, the one where you're sure the salsa is either aggressively seasoned or mixed with the chef's blood. This might leave Guacamelee too abrasive for certain tastes, but for most everyone else it’s the equivalent of a celebration riot in its declared genre.

DrinkBox Studios' lucha libre-flavored brawler is smartly designed, beautifully drawn, and just a lot of fun.

PlayStation 3Indie Haven (Apr 04, 2013)
Guacamelee would be fun if it were just a side-scrolling action game, but not memorable. DrinkBox Studios went the extra mile and polished Guacamelee into a fuller experience than most games of this length and price offer. Like many metroidvania games, there is a ton of stuff you can do. Unlike many metroidvania games however, Guacamelee is enjoyable enough to actually make me do it.

Guacamelee! is an enjoyable romp through a colourful setting full of life and humour, with simple combat and tricky, potentially rage-inducing platforming elements that force you to master all your abilities in order to proceed. It’s tough without being unfair, and most of the time, it’s a breezy little game that anyone can have fun with. For such a short game, it packs in a lot of story and unique characters, and every boss fight is a unique experience that will call upon all your skills to defeat. For only fifteen dollars on PSN, it’s a title well worth the money. Pick up Guacamelee! today, and you won’t be disappointed.

Is there a time and place for meme art in games? Do Guacamelee!‘s Mexican themes offend? How does a game studio properly issue a love letter to their influences? Guacamelee! is a surprising source for a number of in-depth questions regarding ethnic art and internet influence, but it’s also one of the finest games available for the PlayStation Vita. Players steering clear of it for the reasons listed above are missing a robust venture in the world of action-platforming.

PS Vitagames xtreme (Aug 01, 2013)
The game is fun, and challenging, a little bit frustrating at times and that does mar the experience somewhat. But it's colourful visuals and soundtrack soon have you immersed in the game world and that's what we expect from a game isn't it? Will it lure you into replaying it again and again? Maybe, maybe not. I intend to play through it again at some time in the future but I am in no great hurry to do so just yet. A gem, but could have been a little more polished in the final execution.

Colourful, brimming with character and entertaining, Guacamelee offers more than enough content for its low fee to make up for its lack of depth.

PS VitaGameplanet (Apr 22, 2013)
Guacamelee is a solid, well-paced Metroidvania-brawler hybrid with style to burn and a fun spin on a doddery old narrative. It also tries desperately hard to be funny, though, and it falls well short of the mark.
