This is definitely a fun and addictive adventure game that will grow on the youngest or oldest of Harry Potter fans. It’s difficult enough to be challenging for all ages, but easy enough for all ages to enjoy as well … and even some issues here and there won’t stop the fun. In addition, it even provides a solid title for those who aren’t as into the books or movies, and could stand on it’s own as a good action game even without the big name attached.

GameCubeIGN (Nov 08, 2002)
The Harry Potter license is one of the biggest in the world. Millions of readers have enjoyed the books. The same number flocked to see the first movie when it debuted last year and even more are likely be to turn out in long lines for the second. So it makes perfect sense that uber publisher Electronic Arts shelled out big bucks to exclusively bring Potter and his friends to next-generation consoles. That's good and fine, but what of the big question: does the boy wizard's transition to videogames do the franchise justice? As die hard fans of the series, we're happy to report that the answer is a triumphant yes. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets for GameCube is not without flaws, but it's still a polished, fun, inventive 3D adventure game that shouldn't be missed.

Fact of the matter is that there is no reason not to like this game regardless of whether you are into the books and movies or not. It is an excellently crafted 3D action/adventure title that manages to stay true to its namesake and be a hell of a lot of fun in the process. The GBA link support doesn’t hurt matters either. The boy who lived makes an exceptional debut on the Gamecube.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets will not only please the fans of the books and movies but also satisfy those gamers looking for an outstanding adventure game. With its well-crafted story, great characters and nearly perfect controls, this is a game that is just too fun to ignore. If you’re looking for the perfect game in the Harry Potter universe, this is most definitely the game to buy.

XboxIGN (Nov 12, 2002)
You never know what to expect from a videogame based on a popular license. But, to me, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets hasn't fallen victim to any of the unfortunate failings that become so many of these types of games. It's, in fact, a very well done 3D adventure game filled with a fun quest, challenging puzzles and an intuitive control scheme and magic system. It reminds me a lot of Zelda, actually, which is a great thing. That's not to say it's perfect. Some of the puzzles lack the intensity of those in Zelda and there is a level of redundancy in some of the challenges, but for the most part it's all still something of an addiction.

I think that just about anybody will get his or her money's worth with this game. But for genuine Potter fans, this is an absolute must buy. The way in which developer Eurocom has brought Diagon Alley, Hogwarts, Quidditch and the cast of the Potter books to life in videogame form is brilliant. There is so much to see and do in the Harry Potter universe here that the game is practically a virtual library of Potter related locations, items, and characters. And the topper is that the Chamber of Secrets storyline is presented with equal flair and detail.

All in all Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets was not a bad game by any means, neither was it a great game. It was a great attempt by EA, but in the end Chamber of Secrets just wasn't fun enough for me. You slowly start the game before you even get into the castle (Hogwarts) and then you have somewhat boring and tedious missions. Another complaint is the ridiculously long load times, which by the way are after about every other room!

If you're a Harry Potter fan, this game is for you. If you're a gamer as well, that's even better. Eurocom have almost done the impossible: They have made a movie/novel based game actually good. The game exudes effort and it really shows. Sure it may not blow you away technically; the gameplay is way off revolutionary and it doesn’t have the same polish and refinement as really big titles, but that doesn’t mean that you won’t have fun with this game. Even someone who isn’t a fan of the Potter series will find something here that captures's their interest. If only all franchise games could be made like this!

In the end, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets is a marked improvement over the last Harry Potter game--it has a stronger game design and a lot more polish. The game's impressive visuals on the Xbox coupled with its rich gameplay definitely make it one of the better platform games on the system. Xbox owners looking for a solid platform experience will want to check out the game.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets is a marked improvement over the last Harry Potter game--it has a stronger game design and a lot more polish. Although the graphics are the weak link in the package, the game is still very playable and fun for fans of the series. The rich gameplay and engaging story give the game an appeal that very nearly rises above the rough visuals, and they definitely capture the spirit of the books.

The lousy camera is a handful and a half, though, as it rarely orients itself properly and often abandons the player outright. That flaw aside, the game is very easy to play and offers lots of help, which makes perfect sense given its appeal to a young audience. Overall, the GameCube version ranks as the best of this year's class, and as long as your Potter fandom never falters, you'll see the magic in exploring this Chamber of Secrets.

XboxGamePro (US) (Nov 25, 2002)
With such a strong license behind it, one would think the new slew of Harry Potter games would be topnotch entertainment. Unfortunately, the only thing outstanding about the Chamber of Secrets is the license as the derivative gameplay, nerve-grating voices, and uninspired design will likely turn off all but the most fervent of fans. Flipendo!

PlayStation 2Gameplanet (Dec 12, 2002)
Sure it's single player only, but it's of a decent length, and the story unfolds over what feels like a long time. It's well worth the money, especially at $99.95 (NZD). Guys, your girlfriend will love it. Dads, your kids will love it. Wives, your husband will love it. If you're looking for an excellent quality game, that will appeal to kids of all ages, give this a go.

I find myself somewhat disappointed with the game. The graphics are good and the sound/voices are good, but the gameplay is sorely lacking. Between not knowing I could wall sneak because of the wonky activation of the A button and constantly losing my beans, I became increasingly frustrated with the game. I am a big Harry fan and I think that this is definitely a rental unless you are buying for a child who will be less sensitive to my issues and enjoy the game because it has Harry in it.

PlayStation 2Game Informer Magazine (Jan, 2003)
Let me preface my remarks by saying this: If you’re shopping for a certified J.K. Rowling fanatic this holiday season, this game should do well enough to fill their Potter-centric gaming needs. If you’re young, and in love with a fictional wizard from England, you’ll probably eat this up like a box of Bertie Botts Every Flavor Bean! Woo-hoo! Hey, how’s that for a pull quote? Moving on, let’s discuss whether or not Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets is worth the recycled plastic disc it’s burned into. In a word, no.

PlayStation 2GamePro (US) (Nov 22, 2002)
The game, however, does offer a goodly amount of variety in its vaguely mini-Zelda-ish episodes, and the ability to charge your many different magicks and cast them without any spell points to worry about is kinda fun. The sound effects are the game's most solid aspect with talented voice-actors (imitators, not the real thing) spewing scads of Britishisms. Just try not to flip out the hundredth time you hear Flipendo.

Harry Potter enthusiasts will fall in love with this game immediately - it truly takes the player into Harry Potter's world and leads them through a series of days at Hogwarts. For any other gamer its a waste of time and most of the game has more load time than storyline. Rent it if you are unsure if you're a Harry Potter fan or not.
