Xbox 360TrueAchievements (Nov 27, 2012)
Ultimately this game will be judged against its predecessors. Is Absolution the best Hitman game to date? In many ways, yes, in some ways, no, but it certainly stands out as a unique title that isn't going to be duplicated in any other series. The new focus on story doesn't always hit its mark and some of the level designs were less than ideal, but for the most part, Absolution is a must-play this holiday season simply because it plays like no other game available and it plays very well. If you find time to exit the crowded lobbies of this season's huge multiplayer titles, Hitman: Absolution is a filthy, violent, and worthy trip into the heart of darkness.

With many franchises providing annual iterations, Agent 47’s six and a half year hiatus seemed like an eternity for series supporters. Fortunately, Hitman Absolution was worth the wait. Barely acknowledging contemporary inclinations in gaming, the title is a thoughtful, protractedly-paced stealth puzzler which stays true to its roots. While Sam Fisher may have sought stardom through simplified mechanics, Agent 47 remains the stalwart slayer he’s always been. Bless his murderous, old soul.

Hitman’s temporary hiatus did worlds of good for the franchise, and Absolution is one of the strongest entries in the series to date. It shows true evolution, moving Agent 47 forward and playing up his enhanced abilities well, both when it comes to hitting a well-placed shot to the head of a scummy target or stealthily moving through a building full of police. The changes to the formula could have spelled disaster if they were executed poorly, but that’s not an issue--execution has never been an issue for Agent 47, has it?

Hitman: Absolution is the finest action title of the year. You'll fall in love with the addictive gameplay as you perform one hit after another all while exploring the open world environments that allow you to play and take out enemies the way you want, and our bald-headed protagonist has never looked better. The game's graphical quality is top notch, and you'll appreciate the game's sound design even more. From the sound of a knife slicing into an enemy to entering a packed club, everything sounds great and has been tweaked to sound as authentic as possible. The soundtrack hasn't missed a step even with the series' composer Jesper Kyd missing from the score. The captivating score presents some elegant instrumentals that will make you feel like a true killer and have you looking to take one more stab at another horrific kill. Check out Hitman: Absolution on your favorite platform today!

While still very much a traditional stealth game, Hitman: Absolution has changed the series for the best in offering cinematic quality combat. It has a stronger focus on telling a coherent story while keeping a slow methodical pace. With a terrific single player campaign and a compelling online multiplayer component, it’s safe to say that whether or not you were a fan of the series before, you will be now. Even with its imperfections, Hitman: Absolution is a magnificent achievement that goes well beyond expectations and will lead future stealth action titles into a better tomorrow.

I haven't played a Hitman game in years and I'm glad I returned with Absolution. It is a great return for a classic franchise and well worth the time for series fans and newcomers alike. Absolution isn't without its flaws, though. The control scheme, while being oddly alluring, can be cumbersome and confusing early on. Escape missions, while neat in concept, tend to break the mold and are one-off in the grand vision of the game. The slower approach, also, will be a drastic change of pace for many newcomers. The high points far outweigh the lows, however. The steep veering away from linear gameplay is refreshing and the freedom in accomplishing objectives should be applauded. Contracts Mode is also an excellent addition to the franchise that will keep players coming back for a long time to come. If any of this appeals to you, you owe it to yourself to give this game a shot.

PlayStation 3Game Revolution (Nov 20, 2012)
If you're new to the series, there's plenty of warm water here to sink into, but franchise stalwarts need not worry. Agent 47 is as cunning, deadly, and silent as you want him to be; it just so happens that purist players will also be the most rewarded. Regardless your level of experience, Hitman: Absolution scratches a very specific itch, one that involves a butterfly knife or possibly an accidental electrocution.

Like Dishonored before it, it’s actually a true pleasure to play a game that lets you tackle it from multiple angles. After several years of increasingly totalitarian games where you’re very much following a pre-determined path, it’s nice to have a game that doesn’t just encourage improvisation; it requires it.

Hitman: Absolution is a pretty good game that manages to offer different types of experience for different types of players, whether they’re hardcore stealth enthusiasts or people who don’t really like to crawl around while staying in cover. Sure, the story isn’t that great and there are some fairly linear sections with very few checkpoints, but the top notch Contracts mode makes up for it by offering fun yet challenging missions that will certainly please the many players who’ll try out this new stealth action game.

WindowsGaming Nexus (Dec 12, 2012)
Agent 47 returns in the much-anticipated Hitman: Absolution only to be restricted by linear level structures and poorly-implemented Instinct mode. Fortunately, the new Contracts mode and stunning graphic overhaul both make for worthwhile additions to the series. While Absolution doesn't provide any original or groundbreaking new features with its debut in the high-definition era of gaming, it does succeed at becoming a solid entry in the Hitman series of games.

Xbox 360Game Over Online (Dec 21, 2012)
The truth is that I’m not a huge fan of games like Hitman: Absolution. I’ve been preaching patience this entire review, but it’s not something I personally excel at. Ironically, I think that’s why I liked Absolution so much. You have such fluid control of 47 that if you get spotted, you can enjoy the action and shooting without feeling terribly guilty. In that sense, it reminds me a lot of the Metal Gear Solid games. When you do it right – when it all comes together and the hit comes off without a hitch, there are few games that live up to the same sense of success and accomplishment. Absolution is a fantastic addition to a series that defined a genre last generation, and I can’t wait to see what they come up with for our favorite bald assassin moving forward.

WindowsPC Games (Germany) (Nov 20, 2012)

Xbox 360Game Informer Magazine (Nov 18, 2012)
Despite all of Absolution’s improvements, Hitman still isn’t for everyone. The pace remains slower and more methodical than most action games, and you’ll find yourself reloading checkpoints countless times, in part because they are frustratingly tied to physical locations. If you take a different approach than what the developer had in mind, you may miss them completely. Attaining the rank of Silent Assassin still requires patience, skill, and more than a little trial and error. But while Hitman is still slower than most games, it’s also smarter. Devising a strategy, using the environment and disguises to your advantage, and leaving before anyone knows you’re there are the hallmarks of a perfect hit, and Absolution proves Agent 47 is still gaming’s premier hitman.

Xbox 360Destructoid (Nov 19, 2012)
Hitman Absolution offers refinement of a beloved series in many ways, boasting more visual pizzazz than most anything releasing this year and a well-paced story which features a good share of weirdness without attempting a scope beyond its means. While some simplifications could irk fans who may complain that the game has been watered down, the range of difficulty options should provide ample satisfaction for players who seek a classic Hitman experience without totally alienating those trying its unique blend of stealth and exploration for the first time.

WindowsGBase - The Gamer's Base (Dec 09, 2012)

PlayStation 3Alternative Magazine Online (Dec 31, 2012)
Hitman: Absolution is a brilliant game that tells an average story. Agent 47 is still pretty much a blank slate, but he becomes increasingly more likable as the game progresses simply because the people he kills are so utterly repulsive. Victoria could have been an interesting character but she is mostly absent and Diana (with whom 47 has always had a complex relationship) is sorely missed throughout. Despite these negatives, the gameplay is taut and focused and the visuals are beautiful despite the often dank locations. This is a dark game even during levels basked in bright sunlight. Replay value is through the roof and trying out new approaches seldom gets old. Hitman: Absolution admittedly gets some things wrong – but it also gets a hell of a lot right. Pull on your gloves, straighten your tie and get ready to take out the trash. Agent 47′s business is death… and business is booming.

PlayStation 3Worth Playing (Jan 24, 2013)
Hitman: Absolution proves to be another notable entry in the series. It may house a ho-hum plot, and you'll hate just about every character you come across, but the open nature of the approach is good enough that you'll overlook those blemishes. There's no true method given for each mission, and that's refreshing enough that you'll want to play through each mission several times to find all of the possible avenues. The Contracts mode gives you something more grounded. With a solid presentation at hand, IO has come up with another winner that stealth fans should check out. Our only hope is that it doesn't take the team another six years before Agent 47 returns.

Hitman: Absolution is the sequel to Blood Money that fans have been itching for. In terms of game mechanics it’s the best Hitman that IO Interactive has ever created, although the lack of inherently unique settings is a disappointment. That said, IO has more than made up for that with the brilliant asynchronous Contracts mode, adding replayability to a single-player game in the most smart and stylish way.

The campaign mode will take most players around 10 hours, but thankfully Contracts mode offers plenty more thrills. Here, you play through the levels and assign three targets. You then compete online to get the highest score by assassinating them in whichever way you wish. But given the strength of Absolution’s campaign, it’s hard for this not to feel slightly tacked on. Still, this is the deadliest Hitman yet that's destined to be a hit.

Though you don't need to get into Contracts to enjoy Hitman: Absolution, it helps. The campaign can be a lot of fun, but not every mission is a winner, and Io's hokey plotting does it no favors. Still, Absolution is a distinctive game, both visually and mechanically. It feels like its own thing, while still hewing toward many of the concepts people grew to like about this series over the years. And now those concepts have been put in a competitive arena that's as fun as anything the series has done in single-player since the series' inception. Longtime Hitman fans will undoubtedly be put off by some of the changes Io has made here, but if you're willing to dig a little deeper, you'll find a game that's as rewarding as any Hitman prior.

Overall, Hitman: Absolution is a blast to play, and it represents a beautiful union between the Hitman games of old and new ideas. Everything from the presentation to the subtlest of the audio effects feels crafted with a level of care that is the hallmark of IO’s past efforts with the series. And while the marketing didn’t do this game any favors, it’s still reminiscent of the Hitman games fans talk about fondly. With each target comes a huge level of freedom, room to explore, and test new ideas and methods. Contracts mode is also a welcome addition that will give fans a new way to test each other’s skills on custom contracts. Hitman: Absolution is definitely a game worth picking up regardless of whether you’re a fan of the series or a new entrant into the fray. It’s not perfectly executed, but it comes damn close.

The Hitman series has been in desperate need of fresh ideas since taking a hiatus in 2006 and Agent 47’s career break has certainly done him the world of good. The Hitman: Absolution storyline isn’t exactly ground-breaking with its storytelling and the game suffers from some pretty major technical flaws but the creativity in gameplay and the sheer length of the plot (taking into account the restarts and challenges) is rather staggering compared to some desperately short tales demanding full price at the moment. So for now put the Assassin robes back in the cupboard and suit up - Hitman’s back in town.

PlayStation 3Push Square (Nov 26, 2012)
Hitman: Absolution represents a stellar return for Agent 47, incorporating the best elements from previous titles, while also experimenting with plenty of new ideas. Some of the additions are a little rough around the edges – the narrative stumbles over its ridiculous characters, and the checkpoint system discourages experimentation – but it's still a refreshing experience that challenges your thinking and rewards perfection.

Xbox 360Digital Spy (Nov 18, 2012)
Hitman: Absolution does have a few flaws, but these certainly don't take away from what is a polished and in-depth package that turns killing into a fine art. Hitman purists may decry the latest title, but in our opinion the balance between stealth and action is just right. Most importantly, you feel that you always have the freedom to bring death in any way you choose. The world is your oyster; now go kill in it.

WindowsEntertainium (Dec 17, 2012)
Hitman: Absolution provides a tense and lengthy adventure that rewards patience and creativity. Much like its predecessors, it demands multiple playthroughs thanks to some of the cleverest mission designs seen in the series up to this point, rivaling those of Hitman: Blood Money. Add to that the much improved, simplified control system and the (close to) infinite possibilities of Contracts mode, you can expect to hang with 47 for quite a while. Just don’t get on his bad side.

Xbox 360Console Obsession (Jan 31, 2013)
With Hitman: Absolution, IO Interactive has tried to pique the interest of the mainstream gamer. True, the new engine has resulted in some unfortunate sacrifices, but this is still one impressive looking game. All in all, this Hitman game is not going to please all of the existing series fans, but it does still retain much of the facets that made the series such a unique and special one in the first place.

Xbox 360Splitkick (Dec 20, 2012)
Despite an uneven start, and some changes that might be challenging for old players to accept, it brings the franchise forward in a gargantuan leap. Making Hitman modern, giving it all the polish of a Call of Duty or Uncharted game, not only sets this apart as one of the year’s best releases, but also makes you realise how limiting the linearity in those games is. Agent 47 is back, and his world is more open, more innovative, and more deadly than ever before.

WindowsFactornews (Nov 27, 2012)

The world's greatest assassin has to work hard while in disguise. Linear evasion levels take the 'hit' out of Hitman, but the few sandbox assassinations are about as good as they were in Blood Money. With further modifications to the new formula, Absolution could have been amazing.

While it’s great to see 47 back in business, Hitman: Absolution drifts too far from the franchise’s sweet spot. A lengthy campaign offers plenty of opportunities for diabolical fun, but the stealth mechanics feel like a string of bad decisions, and a lack of pure assassination missions — exactly what the franchise built its fame on — doesn’t help. Most telling, this isn’t the Hitman I’ll revisit for years to dig out all its secrets. That honor stays with Blood Money. I like a lot of what it does and what it tries, but its faults make Absolution something I can’t quite forgive.

In the end, it’s hard not to appreciate the the intricate missions and sandbox levels the Hitman team have created. I just wish I enjoyed playing them more.

Even if you have no interest in contracts, however, Hitman: Absolution's campaign is fulfilling on its own. There are some stumbles here and there--in the AI, in the mission design, and elsewhere. The story, too, hobbles a bit at the end, leaving some narrative gaps that needed filling in. But one thing's for sure: it's good to have Agent 47 back, and he was clearly needed. The greasy world he inhabits was in sore need of cleansing, and it's a pleasure to have so many ways of scraping the human grime off its surface and discarding it like the trash it is.

PlayStation 3Games Finder (Nov 25, 2014)
While some of the changes in Hit man: Absolution might feel like a watering down for long-time fans it means the game is much more suited to newcomers looking to get in on the stealth game play that the Hit man series has to offer.

Hitman: Absolution is not a disappointment. It has its issues, but none of them should be ruining your experience of the game. It’s overall alright if you’ve played the previous installments, and even better if you haven’t.

Hitman: Absolution doesn't make you feel that way often enough for my liking, but amidst the inevitable and deserved grumbling about its awkward checkpoint system, small levels and weird obsession with its daft story, hopefully those who persevere with it will be rewarded by enough of those moments to make the whole thing feel worthwhile. Reloading some of its best levels, turning off the hints and watching and waiting, it's much easier to remember what it is that makes Agent 47 so special. Hitman is a series to treasure for those moments, even if Absolution isn't its finest hour. Hopefully it won't be another six years before IO Interactive gets another shot at showing us why.

WindowsDarkZero (Dec 25, 2012)
I suppose with such a time difference between the last release and Hitman Absolution, this was a sort of rebirth for the series to try capture new fans as well as old ones, by blending multiple ways to tackle assassinations for those who cared and allowing newer fans to sneak around and treat this like a stealth game rather than a Hitman game. It’s not a bad game by any means, and it does fix some problems with the controls that plagued previous games, but having the story that essentially makes Agent 47 less of a hitman and more of an espionage hero, makes Absolution a decent stealth game but not a fantastic Hitman game.

IO Interactive's Hitman: Absolution is a sound addition to the hallowed stealth series, but the game is held back by a surfeit of padding and some poor mechanical choices.

Hitman Absolution is an enjoyable action/stealth game. It has a quirky tale to tell with some interesting environments to explore; it's just a shame that this direction has impacted the core Hitman values so much.

WindowsGameSpy (Nov 18, 2012)
Still, there's a huge gulf between disappointment and betrayal, and I did ultimately enjoy Absolution for what it is -- a game that still carries the torch of the Hitman series, but chooses to carry it down much less interesting roads. It pulls it off well enough to at least consider dusting off the old suit and tie though, and the level design and methods of execution are easily up to the earlier games' standards. It's just a shame that even at its best, Absolution has to be draped with a sadness that we're now unlikely to ever see that amazing Blood Money 2, and to a lesser extent, the odd twinge of guilt at appreciating when its simplicity actually improves on the messy ambition that came before.

WindowsCheat Happens (Dec 27, 2012)
It's perhaps a bit unfair to say that Absolution doesn't feel like a proper Hitman game, it just feels like a new vision for the series -- one that doesn't always pan out. It's a game with its moments, and when they hit they're fantastic, but the limited linear campaign feels like a poor excuse for the gameplay that Hitman fans have known and loved for so long.

A passable stealth game, but one that betrays almost everything that, until now, has made Hitman great.

The best thing one can say about Absolution is that it's impossible to feel ambivalent about it; players will love and loathe aspects of this game in equal measure. In Absolution, terrible ideas rub up against great ones almost on a moment-to-moment basis, and the end result is a title which is impossible to consider with the same clinical detachment that it's protagonist is known for.

There is fun to be had with Absolution, you just have to be exceptionally careful about how you try to have it. Like with 47 himself, the best route is probably to sneak up cautiously and garrote it from behind.

WindowsDarkstation (Jan 08, 2013)
I get no pleasure in making these criticisms, because the game takes some chances. Absolution has a lot of features that seem to have been genuinely designed to make it a better stealth game. The game appears to have been designed as much for the hardcore fans of the series as the newcomers, which is saying something in this day and age of so many games being designed solely for "accessibility". Hitman: Absolution does stand out from the ocean of gray and brown shooters that populate the market, but not in enough good ways to warrant a recommendation.

Xbox 360Calm Down Tom (Dec 05, 2012)
In short there is far too much emphasis on the shooty-bang-bang and just not enough stealth, or at least anything above brain-dead stealth. I did have a bit of fun and I do think maybe my playthrough is tarnished by such a game ruining bug, but I know I am not the only one. For me, the new Hitman is a grievous let down. I never wanted to see it drawn out and bludgeoned in front of an oblivious crowd. I wanted to blend in with the masses and rejoice in the fact that they got away with it. A new Hitman for the new generation. But that isn’t what I really wanted, only what I thought I wanted. In hindsight I would have preferred the HD collection and god knows when that will appear. There is still hope for the series in the blatantly obvious nod at a sequel I pieced together from online videos. But maybe leave it a while or take on board the huge criticisms that have surfaced over the new instalment. Hell I didn’t even get to beat up any sexy nuns.

I can’t really consider Absolution to be a must buy sort of title, but it’s worth checking out as a curiosity rental at least. There are elements here that I like, and things that do harken back to the traditional Hitman experience, but this is about as far off the rails as the series has managed to get. Hopefully the next entry tries to reign in the foreign concepts a little more, because this hardly feels like the right direction to take the series in.

Xbox 360The Telegraph (Nov 21, 2012)
The issue for the game itself is that the linear narrative drive causes enormous friction with Hitman's trademark open creativity. The series legacy was built on you being dropped in a large, open, often public area and tasked with eliminating your target (or targets) as you saw fit. It would be a case of canvassing the area, tailing your targets, figuring out their routines and keeping an eye out for accidents waiting to happen. Absolution does make an attempt to recreate similar thrills, with some levels opening up as areas to explore with targets to knock off. These areas are undoubtedly when Absolution is at its best, such as an early level set in a bustling Chinatown with multiple kills options and escape routes, but it struggles to offer the playful, dark invention the series is famous for.

While there are a few sequences that thrill the way a proper Hitman should, like stalking a dark cornfield or combing Chinatown without being dressed as a chef, these brief glimpses of 47's predatory roots are outnumbered three-to-one by kludgey segments more about duckwalking towards exits than they are about killing professionally. I would imagine that the goal of Hitman: Absolution was to take Agent 47's detailed, methodical gameplay and make it appeal to players more familiar with modern action/stealth hybrids, but all the devs have done is eviscerate their unique franchise with poorly-implemented mechanics and left him to die an awkward, humiliating death.

PlayStation 3Game Arena (Nov 19, 2012)
Hitman Absolution is a mistake. Even if in your mind the plot loops all the way past 'so bad it's bad' and back to 'so bad it's good' again, Hitman Absolution has more bugs than a service station meat pie and less direction than a headless chicken. A genuinely fun mode like Contracts can't save that. IO Interactive needs to restart from the Blood Money checkpoint and try again - they screwed up this run spectacularly.
