Icarus: Sanctuary of the Gods

aka: Droiyan
Moby ID: 3278

Description official description

Once upon a time, deities fought over the continent of Icarus. The benevolent Tetheus has won, and the evil Ercanet was banished. However, things only got worse afterwards, as Ercanet was unable to forgive the humans for supporting Tetheus. He corrupted the souls of people and populated the continent with terrifying beasts, acting through his emissary, the wizard Colias. The Coshark mercenaries tried to oppose Colias, but only one of them, a young man named Dreus, survived. Together with his fiancee Helena, Dreus embarks on a quest to stop the evil and restore peace.

Like many Korean RPGs, Icarus: Sanctuary of the Gods has many elements from Japanese-style RPGs. The narrative is character-driven; various characters join the party over the course of the story, playing their own parts in it. Story advancement is quite linear. The game's visual style is reminiscent of Japanese manga and anime. Combat is turn-based, taking place on large screens, on which the player navigates the characters and assigns commands to them.

An RPG that had great potential and promise...

The Good
The game has good anime-style graphics, and the ambient music was good. Furthermore, the opening was pretty eye-catching, although it was a bit trite. The number of characters you are allowed to possess in your party was also nice, as it included nearly every character class one could wish for. Also great was the fact that the best weapons were given to you: that is, you did not need to buy them. (Then again, that only occurred at the end...)

The Bad
First of all, the game was rather linear. There really was no exploring: all that took place was a battle, and then a town, and then a battle, then a town, and so on. With no exploration, the game quickly grew tiresome: all one did was fight, buy weapons, and then fight some more. The characters showed promise, as each had a different background, but they were unfortunately not developed well enough. Sure, we know that Dreus and Helena are fianced, but wouldn't it be a little better if they interacted with each other more? In other words, there was -no- character development. The story was also pretty cliche: it is common in most anime and or fantasy stories.

The Bottom Line
A game that could have been great, if the designers spent a bit more time on it. The story needs more subplots, the characters need more development, and for goodness' sakes, there needs to be exploration!
