Icewind Dale: Heart of Winter
Description official descriptions
Picking up after the conclusion of Icewind Dale, peace has returned to Icewind Dale... or so it seems. A plot by the northern Barbarians to attack the Ten Towns is underway, and it is up to the party of adventurers to investigate and stop this plot.
This expansion on the original game is more of the same. The game focuses on epic battles and powerful magics, relying on the plot only to provide a background for the fighting and spell-casting. Included are new weapons, armors, and enemies. Battles are now more like Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn than in the original, relying heavily on strategy and spell-casting to combat very powerful enemies.
The player can import their party from the original game to continue their adventure.

I'm sorry. I blinked and I missed the expansion.
The Good
I want to start off by saying Black Isle can do no wrong. They gave us Planescape: Torment, the Fallout RPGs, the Baldur's Gate series, the list goes on. They have never made a bad game. This is a big freakin' exception though. This still has the same classic dungeon crawl hack and slash as Icewind Dale...
The Bad
...and all the same problems. The game has a run of the mill story and the expansion is all the same run of the mill, compacted into 15 minutes of gameplay. Seriously, this game takes about two days of on and off playing to beat. It has like five areas, all linear! There are around two side-quests. There are very few additions. The story is superficial at best. If their past games were at one end of the spectrum, this is at the other. And all of this at the price of a full expansion.
The Bottom Line
Save your money. If you liked Icewind Dale and see it for $10-$15, go for it. Do not spend any more. It isn't worth your money. That said, I'm going to go play some Baldur's Gate 2: Throne of Bhaal to remind me why these guys are the only company out there that's better than Blizzard.
