Gamer's Pulse (May 13, 2001)
Icewind Dale: Heart of Winter does what an expansion set should do in my book: it increases the playability of a very good game and adds enough new things to make it almost an entirely new experience. For anyone who enjoyed the original game, this is a definite must have.
Simply put, if you’re an RPG fan you WILL buy this game. If you’re a Baldur’s Gate fan, you WILL buy this game. If you’re an Icewind Dale veteran, you’re already on line at your nearest software store. Please believe me when I tell you that if there was ever a must-have expansion title, this is it.
Electric Games (Apr 05, 2001)
The new plot content is fairly short, but keep in mind that this is an expansion, not a whole new game. If your original Icewind Dale party meets the level requirements, you may march right into the new content. If you're new to Icewind Dale, it's a great idea to get the expansion at the same time, so you may experience the interface and graphics overhaul throughout the entire game. This is a worthy expansion to what already is a great game. Bottom Line: New content, new level caps, spells, skills, and more. The entire interface gets a facelift and looks much like Baldur's Gate II. Those who finished Icewind Dale and enjoyed it will appreciate the new story content. Those who are just purchasing the original game will get much more out of it, as the entire graphics interface has been improved.

IGN (Mar 02, 2001)
Playing through Heart of Winter reminded me just how enjoyable the original Icewind Dale was and I'm actually tempted to go through the entire series again from the beginning of Icewind Dale through the end of the expansion if I can ever find the time. Heart of Winter achieved the goal that I believe every expansion pack should. It added even more life to an already great game, and I cannot find too much to complain about except the level of difficulty. The expansion is designed for characters who have been built up quite a bit, but there are always ways to get powerful characters.

The thing is, after having played BGII, which came out after IWD, the feeling that HoW is not worth the USD30 Interplay is asking for is somewhat magnified. Many fans will feel this way, I suspect. Does the "heart of fury" mode balance up the scales a little more? Maybe so, but only for those who want to take a break from their BGII marathon.
Gameplay (Benelux) (Mar 30, 2001)
Een mooie uitbreiding maar men heeft te veel dezelfde fouten gemaakt als bij Tales of the Sword Coast.
Black Isle has managed to harvest an incredible amount of gameplay from the Baldur's Gate engine it created a couple years ago, and much of this lifespan can be attributed to its willingness to extrapolate and expand. This winning attitude was best represented in the recent Baldur's Gate II, but it shines through marvelously in Heart of Winter as well. Taking bits of interface from other games in its D&D line, Black Isle has crafted yet another epic tale set in the Forgotten Realms. Whether you've finished Icewind Dale already, or are about to start, I can think of no reason why one wouldn't want Heart of Winter to go along with it. The lone fact that you can get your characters to 30th level seems reason enough to me. It's not as expansive as Baldur's II, and not as role-playing heavy as Planescape, but it's a fantastic way to lose a few weeks of your life.

This expansion pack is worth every last cent to a fan of Icewind Dale.

As a stand-alone addition, it’s fairly bare-bones, offering about 10 hours of additional gameplay, which makes its nearly full-blown price tag seem rather excessive. However, when you take into account the host of changes to Icewind Dale‘s core gameplay, the expansion begins to show its true colors. Being able to go back and play through the original with an increased resolution, new spells and additional items is truly fantastic, as is the number of tweaks done to the various class abilities. The “interactive item” hotkey is truly a necessity, as it simplifies some of the trickier elements that plagued the original. All in all, Heart of Winter is one of those rare titles that not only builds upon its predecessor’s success, but also manages to enrich it tenfold. It’s a must-have for those who loved Icewind Dale, and definitely worth a look for those who found themselves turned off by its few flaws.
PC Action (Mar 21, 2001)
Gamezilla (May 19, 2001)
Overall, the expansion is well done, but it will appeal mostly to rabid D&D players and those who have played the original game as it is entrenched in the world of Icewind Dale. The storyline is entertaining and builds on the original, but it only offers about 15-20 hours of play on its own. One can only fight so many undead creatures before getting tired of it. This is not a game for the casual RPG player, which is why I gave it a score of 72.
ActionTrip (Mar 06, 2001)
Small innovations and enhancements are sure to attract people who were thrilled with the original game, but are highly unlikely to attract anyone else. Hence, I can but conclude that Heart of Winter presents a good Expansion Pack, but nothing else that would leave a deeper mark on the video-game industry.

Gry OnLine (May 25, 2001)

Shoulda been, coulda been, woulda been - like ashes in the wind. If Black Isle spent half as much time making the game as they did improving the graphics and music, we might have had a contender on our hands. As it is, however, all we have is a beautiful disappointment. Heart of Winter might crash and burn, but it does it in style! At its current price point, it is not a fair value to most gamers - especially those who have already uninstalled Icewind Dale and trashed their old characters. Having to hack my own characters just to do a review is a disgrace. For those who've played IWD to death, it's a slap in the face. Honestly, we can't figure out what Interplay was thinking by not updating character generation for Heart of Winter. HoW will be a good deal for those who buy it in the bargain bin after playing Icewind Dale (and saving their characters) or those who get it as part of a "Collector's Edition".
Of course, all this is irrelevant if you don’t plan on replaying the original ICEWIND DALE journey but just want to see the new areas. It’s tricky to balance the relative worth of new content versus enhancing content, and it depends on what you’re looking for. Me, I merely slogged through the new stuff, but having my party unleash Power Word: Kill onto a pack of shivering, squirmy little goblins made it all worth it.
GameSpot (Feb 21, 2001)
In the end, it's not that Heart of Winter isn't worth your time, because it really doesn't take much--the problem is it just isn't worth your money.
