WindowsPC Gameworld (1999)
Imperialism II, like a complex flight simulation, takes a lot of time investment to reap the benefits, but the benefits are well worth it. An excellent game to lose yourself in.
WindowsPower Play (Apr, 1999)
Na also!
MacintoshIGN (Jun 07, 2002)
Overall, SSI has succeeded in making an excellent sequel. Graphical and interface improvements make for a very enjoyable, high resolution experience. The sound design is also well done, offering a soundscape the evokes the 15th century. There is a steep learning curve, but it is worth the time investment to really learn to play the game.

In the end, if you're a die-hard strategy fan, you've got to add this game to your library. It looks good, it plays good, and the time frame that it's set in is very different from all of the other game on the shelf. If you're new to strategy games, you may want to give this game a wide berth until you've gained a little more experience with other games of the oeuvre.

In spite of the lopsided score in the Realism Bowl, Imp2 is a fun and challenging game to play. It's much improved over Imp1 even though simpler in many ways. But the bobtail realism will neither hamper nor offend the target audience. Beer and pretzels all the way, Imperialism 2 accomplishes most of what Imp1 set out to do. We like it. We don't kiss it but we do hug it from time to time.

Imperialism 2 doesn’t have great supporting elements, but the fun of the gameplay is alluring if you like these kinds of games. If you’ve grown tired of SMAC or didn’t like it in the first place or are waiting for Call to Power to reach a playable state, then Imperialism 2 is worthy of your consideration. If you played and enjoyed Imperialism, I can see few reasons why you won’t enjoy the many changes and improvements you’ll find in this sequel. The diplomacy could be better, some gameplay issues could be resoloved and the interface could be a little friendlier. At the same time, the technology tree has been greatly expanded, the roles of the New and Old World are changed and the game really does offer you a chance to try multiple paths to victory. It’s a solid title that nicely combines some quality features into an attractive title. It’s not for everyone and those of you who thirst for the thrill of constant combat might feel bogged down in some of the other elements.

IMPERIALISM II is one of those rare games that actually adhere to the truism that gameplay is the first priority. It’s not flashy, but as you dig into it you find that it’s deep, addictive, and challenging. And there’s no 3D accelerator or Pentium II required. This is one title that will live on my hard drive for quite some time.

Your computer foes are stronger in Imperialism II, making surprisingly competitive diplomatic and military decisions. So be cunning. Use your wits and wield a heavy bat. You might even hit a couple out of the park yourself.
WindowsGameGenie (1999)
Imperialism II: Age of Exploration is a highly detailed strategy game that actually has good graphics and sounds. With enough detail and complexity to satisfy the most intense strategist, it still is fun enough for a person who might want to try out a game just for the fun of it. The graphics are detailed and look good, though the animations need a bit of work, and the sound is really good, especially the music, which sounds very old worldish. Though a bit difficult to learn at first, and sometimes unwieldy to play at times, it is fun and interesting to play. The bottom line is that if you love strategy you'll love this game.
WindowsElectric Games (1999)
There is little to dislike about this title, it is different enough from Civilization that it has a completely different feel. There is limited graphical flash in Imperialism II, but the strategy more than makes up for it. It is a very addictive game, I found myself playing for hours without even looking at the clock. If you are a fan of Imperialism, this should appeal to you right away (and you'll pick up on the specifics more quickly). If you've not played the original and are a strategy fan, Imperialism II is worth checking out but will take more time to acclimate you to it. It is a complicated game, but worth the time. Bottom Line: Similar in many ways to the original title, different in many others. Victory conditions have been completely overhauled. Less micromanagement makes portions of the game much less frustrating and repetitive. Imperialism II has a sharp learning curve, mastering it will take some time investment.
MacintoshMac Gamer (1999)
Imperialism II is an excellent strategy game with only minor flaws to detract from that excellence. In fact, I have never played an empire-building strategy game that required its players to make such finely balanced decisions. Further, the game was always challenging even on the lower difficulty settings, and because of that I found it quite addictive. Often I found myself caught in the just-one-more-turn syndrome, which is always the litmus test for a game's rating.
WindowsPC Joker (Apr, 1999)
WindowsGamezilla (Jun 28, 1999)
Imperialism II is a well-designed, solid performer that makes a fun play and an interesting challenge, and the creators deserve kudos for a job well done. However, Imp II won't be joining the library of games that have a permanent residence on my hard drive. There are two real reasons for this. First, the game is the same every time. In Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri there are different factions, different victory conditions and different strategies to win, but in Imperialism II it's always the same game. Second, getting your nation up and running is hard. Getting a working economy took several tries, but after I did it I didn't relish the thought of doing it again. This criticism aside, I do recommend Imperialism II to any 4X gamers. At the very least, it deserves a look because it has a purposeful, "designed" quality lacking in so many of today's games.
WindowsPower Unlimited (May, 1999)
WindowsPC Player (Germany) (Apr 07, 1999)
WindowsPC Games (Germany) (Apr, 1999)
MacintoshMac Addict (Aug, 1999)
Imperialism II rewards you with addictive play. Taking a walk through history has never been more fun.
