Halo 4: King of the Hill was a promotional augmented reality game to promote the release of Halo 4, as well as a partnership with the 7-Eleven chain of stores, the Mountain Dew soft drink and the Doritos potato chips. The game was exclusive to the United States and Canada. The game requires a permanent internet connection and use of the location services.

After (optionally) registering and defining a custom appearance through an emblem and a colour, the app draws a wireframe environment of nearby 7-Eleven stores as hills. By tapping them it shows a leaderboard with the current king and the participating players. Each player has a limited number of supplies that provide bullets. The king can be attacked to take him down, shown as a short, non-interactive first-person shooting sequence. By participating or becoming the king, various prizes can be earned, such as double XP in the Halo 4 game, a dashboard theme, a 'Bulletproof' emblem, a helmet (US only) or a ghost prop for the dashboard avatar (Canada only). Registering is required to claim a prize.

Refueling supplies is done by waiting or by scanning bottles of Mountain Dew or bags of Doritos chips. The game uses recognition software for the logo and the player has to align the real-life image through the camera until it is sufficiently recognized. Attacks can be done remotely, but by visiting and attacking from a 7-Elevens store (tracked through the location service) a more powerful, direct attack is performed.
