It's not often that we see something truly unique on mobile devices, but that is exactly what Nihilumbra is. The puzzle platformer has players interacting with levels by painting the elements onto the landscape. Ice makes surfaces slick, grass makes them bouncy and mud causes any surface to become sticky.

Any gamer who enjoys platformers should not miss this one. Anyone who appreciates a good story should play as well. Despite the few nicks in Nihilumbra’s armor, I’m happy to give it five stars. It is an earnest experience. It might not be perfect, but it’s a fine example of artists using a medium to tell a story. And it’s tons of fun too.
Slide to Play (Jul 17, 2012)
All told, Nihilumbra is an exquisite game that’s full of surprises. You might find the regular levels a little on the easy side, but if you like surprises and challenge, just wait till you beat the game. We couldn’t stop playing Nihilumbra once we started, and can’t recommend it highly enough. It’s a terrific game, with fun platforming, smart puzzles, and a heavy dose of philosophical questioning. If you’re into any one of those things, Nihilumbra is a certified Must Have.

However, beyond the control issues I found myself completely fascinated by Nihilumbra. The game is artistically wonderful, the gameplay is creative yet not repetitive, and there’s replay value for those who want it. I can’t praise this fantastic indie platformer enough.
Touch Arcade (Jul 03, 2012)
But that's practically quibbling. Nihilumbra is a must-play game, whether you're in it for the story or the art, the puzzles or the platforming. They may not be the best individually, but they make a beautiful whole. And trust me when I say that you'll be well and truly challenged if you make it to the very end. You can judge Nihilumbra by its cover, but it's better in motion—far, far better. That's a pleasant surprise, wouldn't you say?
It's a triumph for those who favor experiential gaming over the challenge of eking out ever-smaller, incremental degrees of satisfaction from more skill-based titles. If you prefer to lose yourself in a world, rather than dominate it, then Nihilumbra will provide you with a perfect slice of unprecedented escapism.
TouchGen (Jul 06, 2012)
Nihilumbra is one of those games that are more about the emotional experience than the actual gameplay. Sure there are some ok puzzles, and there are certainly some excitement when the void chases Born. Still it is the messages, the confusion and the evolution of Born that packs the punch.

A gloomy, intelligent platformer, Nihilumbra will keep you playing until the bitter end
