The Stroke of Midnight is about a stressed writer that travels to Europe for a change of scenery and hopefully some European historical inspiration. During her stay at a middle ages style castle she experiences a victorian love triangle story from long ago through a series of brief ghostly encounters.
The game style is a hidden object puzzle adventure with large focus on storytelling and limited hidden object or puzzle elements. The game is rendered in 3D allowing for sweeping movements from location to location or areas of additional focus. The inventory system allows for carrying only one item at a time with interaction reduced to whatever the player is currently holding.
As with many hidden object puzzle adventure games the hidden object search elements scenes help key plot event sequences or yield needed items to assist the player for puzzle solution or story progression. Hidden object scenes are somewhat traditional with word objects but uniquely blended into the 3D scenes. For hint help in finding an object you simply touch the word for the objects location. A type of magic mirror or reflection surface in each 3D scene acts as a form of story narration which allows for riddle style hints and additional clues.
