Type:Rider
Description
Type:Rider is a puzzle platform game where the player guides two connected dots through different environments to reach an exit. Similar to Nightsky and other rolling ball games, physics come into play to climb hills and move over platforms. The game's theme is the history of typography, starting with the earliest origins in cave paintings to the most modern forms and fonts. The game has a distinct educational aspect, not only in the visual images during gameplay, but also providing detailed information about the history. During the game white flakes can be picked up that unlock pages (called archives) in a separate book, providing text and images about the origin and history of the font or technique. Originally started as a student game, the final version was developed in cooperation with Arte Creative, an emergent arts division of the Franco-German TV network ARTE, as well as font developer Monotype.
The game consists of ten worlds each with a distinct visual style: Origins, Gothic, Garamond, Didot, Clarendon, Future, Times, Helvetica, Pixel, and a hidden world based on Comic Sans MS. The main objective is to reach the exit, but there are flakes to pick up to unlock pages and usually there are different letters to collect that form an alphabet. There are also ampersands hidden in the levels. Depending on the platform, there are different types of controls to move the dots: using the keyboard (PC), a digital controller (PC / iOS), touch, the accelerometer or on-screen buttons (iOS / Android). The dots are able to jump and bounce off walls for a wall jump. They can use streams of hot air to reach higher areas. Next to the platform based puzzle solving there are more complex puzzles involving moving around a white dot, combined with buttons that open and close gates or control a water level. The dots can fall off and explode, but respawn infinitely. Each world can be accessed from a main hub and there are trophies for certain actions.
The free browser version is limited to the five first worlds.
