Words On Tour is a word construction game. Levels consist of a board filled with tiles with different letters. The player has to construct English words by selecting adjacent letters horizontally, vertically or diagonally. When a correct word is formed, it disappears from the board, the remaining letters drop down and the empty spaces are filled up with new letters.

Levels are grouped together as cities unlocked gradually. The included cities are Paris, London, Tokyo, San Francisco, Cairo, New York and Sidney. Each city has a level path with levels unlocked one by one. There are flags in the background that provide information about prominent monuments or landmarks. Levels have different game modes. In the tile mode you need to clear a number of tiles with a limited amount of moves. In the find the phrase mode you need to collect letters that form a phrase connected to the city or country near the top of the screen. After some initial letters are found, players can usually guess the remaining ones and need to form words containing those letters to complete the phrase. In collect the stamps you need to create words on specific tiles to collect an amount of stamps. In catch the bus the goal is to drop a token into a bus. The player needs to create a path towards the target by clearing words and navigating around obstacles can be done by rotating the device or on-screen arrows for Facebook. In other game modes the device can be rotated or the arrows can be used to view the letters in a different formation.

Each word is rewarded with a score of at least 100 points, scaled further through the length of the word and the use of hard letters. Up to three stars can be earned per level. When a level is cleared with moves remaining, they are added to the screen as travel bags that provide additional points. Each city has two zone gates that need to be unlocked by asking help from three Facebook friends, spending stars or spending premium tokens. There is a limited number of lives. Additional ones are generated over time, can be requested from friends or are bought through the in-game token currency available as in-app purchases. Tokens can also be used to continue playing when no more moves are left or to activate power-ups.

Power-ups can be equipped pre-game or are chosen in-game. Activating them always requires tokens. A pre-game example is line blast, a bonus tile that clears a line vertically, horizontally or diagonally when a word is formed with it. Bonus tiles also appear in-game by filling up a meter near the top of the screen, by forming words. In-game power-ups are hammer booster to remove any tile, swap booster to swap two tiles on the board, and travel guide that reveals a word with at least three letters. When waiting for some time the game always suggests a word as well, but it only consists of three letters. More difficult levels introduce boards with irregular shapes, and different types of tiles and stamps that often require multiple nearby word formations in order to clear them from the board. The player starts the game with five lives and 25 tokens.
