Game Chronicles (Jun 20, 2010)
Assault Squadron easily stacks up with any space shooter I have played on the PS3 or 360 in the past few years, both in visuals and in gameplay. Controls are responsive no matter which mode you choose and the only thing better than the presentation is the adrenaline rush you get while playing the best space shooter ever created for a mobile device.
Macworld (Aug 28, 2010)
In a genre dominated by ever-busier iterations of the same tiresome, frustrating nonsense, Assault Squadron raises the bar in every category: challenging (it is so very hard), gameplay, competent writing, customizable ships and combat, an integrated online leaderboard feature, even an appropriately oppressive trance soundtrack, all of which create a fun factor that screams “must have." The Takeaway: Great gameplay, epic combat, lots of fun.
App Spy (May 31, 2010)
Assault Squadron isn't as nuanced as some of the real shmup classics, but it's still an intense challenge waiting to be conquered and mastered by veteran fans.

Assault Squadron is a fantastic game. While I personally prefer twitchier controls, most players will not find them to be an issue so this concern really should be considered more of a personal preference. Overall Assault Squadron gives the player a full console experience from its cut scenes to it’s high quality visual and sound effects to its challenging boss battles. The fact that all of this comes in a tiny iDevice app package makes it an incredible value and a buy for any shooter fan.

Assault Squadron is a great attempt at the "bullet hell" shoot 'em up genre from outside of its homeland, and is impressive from a technical standpoint, but a shoot 'em up with uncomfortable controls is a shoot 'em up that should be approached with caution. The Binary Mill did a great job at crafting a fun shoot 'em up, but the controls need a little more time in the oven.
